14.01.2022 What is an Indigenous 'scar tree' and why are they special? For hundreds of years, Indigenous Australians removed the bark from various gum trees in order to... build canoes, shields, shelters and a coolamons. This would expose the sapwood, leaving the trees to appear 'scarred' when recovering for the next generation's needs. Scar trees are physical links that connect Indigenous people to their country and culture. They also identify where Indigenous Australians lived and provide clues to other archaeological sites. The trees are now considered rare because of the effect of land clearing and bushfires, which have reduced the numbers of remaining scar trees. Today, remaining scar trees also provide safe breeding hollows for birds.
