16.01.2022 We recently entered some of our beasties into a not-so-serious global Virtual Highland Cattle Show (see www.virtualcattleshow.com/classes.html), and we did pretty well sort-of. We even won a class with Frannsaidh of Cambus Glen taking the honours in the Funny photo class. Then Fifteen, bless his little socks got a third in Steers 12-20 months. We won’t mention to him that there were only three entries. Jane of Avoch got a credible 4th in Heifers 12-18 months against some real competition, and our big-boy Calen Odhar of Sea Crest also came 4th in Bulls 24-32 months. The online photo was a bit blurry, so I include the original because he’s so handsome.

16.01.2022 Cows in the river paddock. They still have a bit of work to do on the grass before moving up closer to the house where the four 2020 babies will be weaned.

15.01.2022 Peaches, plums and apricots to provide future food for the birds while the broccoli provides current food for the bees!

15.01.2022 Poor Zoe has been lonely. The plan had always been to get her a friend, and we had arranged for a companion via one of Megan's friends. But this is 2020 and along came Covid, which resulted in a delay (long story). On Tuesday, Zoe's wait was finally over when Hush arrived - delivered professionally and on time as always by Hann's Horse Transport. Meet Hush - 14.1hh (my guess) 6yo quarter horse mare. She looks like the perfect match - calm, with just the right amount of bossy.

05.01.2022 Miss Dunedin making sure Frannsaidh of Cambus Glen has cleaned behind her ears. Frannsaidh (pronounced FRAN see) is the diminutive of Frangag (angl. Frances) - so she is named after Hugo's mum.

04.01.2022 On Friday our foundation herd sire arrived meet Calen Odhar of Sea Crest. We had no plans to have a bull for the first year or two, and to AI the girls. After an insightful and helpful discussion with Glen (Bairnsley Highlands) we realised this was probably not the best course of action. We considered leasing a bull but were stymied by biosecurity issues. Which left buying a bull. We had a few options to choose from, but it turns out the bull had already chosen us. The firs...t time we visited Bronwyn and Malcolm (Sea Crest Highlands) about two years back we spotted a little dun bull calf that was only a few weeks old, and Bronwyn made a joke that one day he can be your bull. Because he showed potential, Bronwyn kept him intact and he subsequently developed into a beautiful little bull. We saw him at a couple of shows where Bronwyn exhibited him in the junior bull classes, and we always found him quite striking. We had briefly discussed Calen as a potential future bull, but it as always sometime in the future, and Bronwyn was planning to keep him for a year or two to show. But this is 2020, and the National Highland Cattle Show and Bendigo Agricultural (main Victorian Highland show) Show were cancelled. So just as we concluded that we needed to buy a bull, Bronwyn decided that it was time to sell Calen, and the rest is history. So, with help from Adam and Pam (Russlyn Highlands) who assisted with the transport, Calen arrived at Cambus Glen on Friday 4 July 2020 to take on the serious job of romancing the girls. On closer inspection he truly is an exceptional bull, with wonderful balanced proportions, great depth and a magnificent head and he is only just over two years old! Because of his colour (he is a dun), he is also guaranteed to provide a veritable liquorice all-sorts of calves. See more
