25.01.2022 Sneak peek at one of our younger gardeners gardens, Jai is now 15 and always keen to get his hands dirty. @yatesgardening #yatesnexttopgardener @ Camden Community Garden

24.01.2022 It’s asparagus time, picked my first spears at the weekend, good sharp knife under the surface. Asparagus is a real labour of love. I grow comfrey along the edge which also helps break the soil up, I’ll feed comfrey to the chickens over the season. This asparagus has been in for about 7 years and is a huge crop. I will now be picking for a few weeks to come, some lucky folk were in town pre #covid19 times and able to sample some, alas this visit was in time to see it just em...erging. After a few weeks I’ll let this go then come #winter once it dies off I will cut it to the ground and mulch with a good layer of manure to feed it come spring. At the end of this year I may even dig this lot up and divide it. If you’ve never had raw asparagus you don’t know what your missing. If you want to cook it, do it quick, I will steam it till it goes iridescent green not till it’s pale and mush or a fave of mine is the sandwich press. Yep a hot (flat) sandwich press, oiled, drop on the cut spears, beat a couple of eggs, pour them over and by the time your eggs cooked your asparagus will be . Pepper, salt and toast . . . @ Camden Community Garden See more

24.01.2022 Pest control time, these little sap suckers are the bane of citrus, last year our main finger lime was smashed by them, this year it was Jai’s Rainforest Pearl Finger Lime. We’ve been looking for the best method and most eco friendly, given the nature of the spines on the tree hand removal is not a great or easy option. Contained were a few options, all very similar. @ Camden Community Garden

23.01.2022 Huge thanks to all the community garden volunteers who have put so much into this community project over the years. Last week saw Channel 10 - The Living Room visit to film some material for an upcoming show. I have to say I don’t think I have laughed so much, Miguels personality is infectious (no pun intended) and the small crew and beautiful winters day weather made for great days filming. Under normal conditions we would have seen a much larger gathering and filming possibly line up with a regular working bee. Everyone’s work was certainly recognised making the location certainly worth the trip for all concerned. Thanks.

23.01.2022 Look closely and you’ll see one of these nasty little beetles crawl past these girls. An unfortunate introduced pest that snuck into the country around the time of the #sydneyolympics. Now a widespread nuisance, many methods are are used to trap them, apithor traps, diatomaceous earth, oil, mesh bottom bottoms to name a few. If left unchecked they can potentially decimate a colony.

23.01.2022 You think your sweating, imagine being a worm. When placing your worm farm don’t put them in a sunny spot. It pays to have them in the shade and over the top of their food place damp newspaper, hessian or a worm blanket, yep that’s right a blanket. This will help hold moisture in and worms do their best work under a blanket and in the dark. Every few days you can use a watering can and put a couple of litres of water through the worm farm. This is one of @tumbleweedgardening Can O Worms and is 1 of 3 I have at home. All veggie waste either goes to the chooks or the worms. The best food these worms get is the pulp from our juicer, orange, pineapple, apple and carrot. They will chew through a couple of kilos every couple of days.

22.01.2022 It’s heating up, there’s plenty of pollen coming in and nectar starting to flow. #bees #beesofinstagram #beekeeper #shotoniphone #slomo #honey #beekeeping

22.01.2022 A cool day in the Southern Highlands. Notably less tulips planted in Bowral this year. A lot of soil improvement being done, hoping for bigger and better displays next year.

21.01.2022 It’s beginning to look a bit like Christmas in Camden. The decorations are up and the trees are still as bright as ever. Merry Christmas to all our volunteers, friends and special mention to those that passed this year John Newman and Peter Standen. Thoughts are with their families and friends. Now let’s put 2020 behind us because in 31 days it’s 2021 and in 26 days Easter Eggs are on the shelves

21.01.2022 If you don’t live in Australia these are called flies down under. Like most of our wildlife once they emerge residents can be seen running and screaming from the swarms. Luckily they don’t like salt air hence why so many people go to our beaches in summer. . . . .... . . On a serious note they are called Cicadas and they are starting to emerge from their subterranean hollows where they will break out of their pupae to look like this. I was lucky enough to find this one. They are a very juicy morsel for bird life, are super noisy and a part of the Australian landscape. Keen to hear what wildlife you’ve spotted emerging or heading into hibernation depending on your climate. See more

19.01.2022 Tromboncino time, these are the baby ones, and I didn’t even plant them this year. Beautiful when they are this size and almost as prolific as zucchini.

15.01.2022 Just a snippet of a busy day, product on the shelves.

15.01.2022 A few random pics from the last week, plenty of colour in the garden. Oh and those raspberry looking thingys are Atherton Raspberries (not in the garden - but thanks Toni Salter) and they are sooooo good. One of our smaller members is getting things in place for the garden comp. Check out the link.

15.01.2022 Beautiful day at the gardens.

14.01.2022 Checking on your garden at night has its challenges and most of them involve 8 legs. Finger limes growing nicely but I have to keep stink bugs at bay and there’s the odd asparagus spear to pick. I love giving people fresh asparagus, nothing like it.

14.01.2022 Want more connection with your food? A community in Brisbane is reducing their carbon footprint by embracing a local, seasonal food system, which supports farmers in their region and reduces food miles.

14.01.2022 Potatoes are in, 2 rows, should have them for Christmas, I’ll load the timelapse, or head over to our insta page and see the process condensed. Think I need a sleep.

12.01.2022 As promised I wanted to show the true height of good mates @urbanfarmer2570 corn patch. In all fairness it is looking pretty good and the second pic does show actually how good it really is and I’m 6’2 I did think about some sneaky tomato pics but I’ll wait for Justin to post those gems. @ Camden Community Garden

08.01.2022 Our water supply 12 months apart, I took these pics almost exactly same time last year. About 18m difference. @sydneywater @macarthur_chronicle @macarthuradvertiser @macarthurnsw

08.01.2022 When life gives you lemons you make lemon curd and preserved lemons, working on using and storing some excess. Eggs from home, lemons from a mate. Lemon juicer I won in an off road Triathlon at Boorowa many moons ago. Post up your favourite lemon recipes or links and send use your uses for preserved lemons.

07.01.2022 Do you ever get the compliment "nice garden"? Then this competition is for you! The Camden Council Garden Competition is back in 2020 and you could win up to $900 in gift cards! Check out the details and enter here: bit.ly/camdengardencompetition

06.01.2022 Something about freshly cut grass, perfect spot for a picnic.

06.01.2022 Got the chance to have a quick wander around the beautiful gardens of Glenmore House with good mate Justin this evening. Something more relaxing than the onslaught that preceded. Be sure to look up @glenmorehouse to see what workshops are on.

05.01.2022 Spare a thought for these girls, while Australia swelters with 40 degrees many of us will be flicking the aircon on. These girls are doing the hard yards. The airflow through this hive was incredible there is almost a cool breeze at the front of this hive. These girls were a recent swarm collected at Douglas Park a week ago.

04.01.2022 . It’s beginning to look a bit like Christmas in Camden. The decorations are up and the trees are still as bright as ever. Merry Christmas to all our volunteers, friends and special mention to those that passed this year John Newman and Peter Standen. Thoughts are with their families and friends. A speedy recovery to a few of our gardeners also who have had stints in hospital this year or experience I’ll health, Chris, Marilyn, Hazel, Ray, Janet and Harry. Co...ngrats to Hermie and her partner, Claudia and Vincenzo and Justin and Chantelle who had new additions to their families this year also. 03.01.2022 Well the rain cleared and it was a pretty good afternoon so I ducked down to cut some grass in the gardens and on the town farm. Afternoon views were

02.01.2022 Good mate @urbanfarmer2570 collected these from Elderslie Fire Station and they seem to be doing well. I could watch them for ages and generally do till I get a reminder that they don’t like sticky beaks or nosey beeks #bees #slomo #beekeeper #beekeeping

02.01.2022 So happy to see the fruits of thousands of hours of work. It’s not just a matter of pouring wax into a mould. Our bees have toiled for hours/days/months to produce this wax from their bodies to form comb to house their young, to contain pollen, to hold and store honey. Now we present our first candles. Weight approx 100gm. BeesHiveSteveEpicure Store @ Epicure Camden

01.01.2022 A few random shots from this week. Hope everyone is OK.

01.01.2022 Thanks to our socially distanced volunteers who turned up today. 17 all up and plenty of tasks done in the garden. A great day to be outside.
