25.01.2022 Camden Rugby Personalities Paul Clapson This is a true story.... The events described took place in Camden & surrounds over 2 centuries, the 1900s and the 2000s. At the request of the survivors the names have been preserved. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred. ‘Clappo’ turned up at Camden in 1984, as an 18yo, along with his two mates Rick Taylor and Peter Dunn. Clappo is a Statistians delight. He played 284 games for Camden, the 5th highest. He is the Club’s highest pointscorer with 1083 points, 340 ahead of current 1st Grade assistant coach Dane Kelly (743). He scored 91 tries, 20 behind the Club’s highest tryscorer Ethan Whittington (111) and 10 ahead of the Club’s Senior Rugby Chairman Gavin Holder (81). Clappo played many positions in the backline, but in 1987 he decided to become a halfback. He was immediately referred to, around Club circles, as ‘the world’s biggest halfback’, earning himself the additional nickname of ‘The refrigerator’ after the legendary NFL Chicago Bears 152 kg defensive lineman, William Perry. Some creativity from two of our early Club characters Peter ‘Micky Block’ Roberts and Paul ‘Hoogie’ Coppock renamed Clappo ‘Kelvin’, short for Kelvinator Refrigerator, a nickname that stuck for many years. The Illawarra Mercury (article attached) referred to him as Kelvin Gladstone, another nickname which stuck. It did not stop Clappo he was the halfback in the Club’s initial 1st Grade Premiership in 1987, playing alongside Rick Taylor and Peter Dunn. Debilitating knee injuries in the early 90s forced Clappo into early playing retirement and entry into the coaching ranks. He served his coaching apprenticeship in 3rd Grade 1992, 2nd Grade in 1993 and 1994, before landing the top job in 1st Grade for 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999. He coached Illawarra in 1997 winning all games except for a narrow loss in the Caldwell Cup (NSW Country Championships). His 1995 team won the Club’s second 1st Grade Premiership. The 1996 team went down narrowly in the Grand Final. The 1996 team contained 6 NSW Country Representatives in Andrew Harding, Martin Harbour, Jason Whitfield, Peter Fox, Tony Batterham and Sam Snelling. Unfortunately, Sam Snelling had to withdraw after leaving the area once graduating from University. Clappo is the Club’s most capped Senior Coach. He was able to get his knees ‘right’ and continued playing onto 2006, including a 3rd Grade Premiership in 2002. He was an all-round talented sportsman and has what may be a world record in scoring 46 runs in a single cricket over. Certainly, a colourful career from one of Camden Rugby’s all-time greats. You have got to love this Club.

13.01.2022 HOW OUR CLUB WAS FORMED There is no question we have ourselves a wonderful Rugby Club. There just seems to be a couple of versions of how we got there and who would have thought, at the time, that within 12 months of the Club being formed, we were playing in a Grand Final. Agreed we started in 1975 and present at the first meeting were, amongst others, John ‘Cactus Jack’ Walsh, Ken ’Evergreen’ Macaulay, Stuart ‘Mugsy’ Hill, Peter ‘Maple’ Mapledoram and Peter Goodwin.... A Committee was formed. The President was Ken Macaulay, Secretary Stuart Hill and Treasurer Peter Goodwin. A Coach John Walsh was appointed and by seasons end a Best and Fairest Player in David Peter Russell Black. We only had one team, which played in the Third Grade Illawarra Competition. We also made the Grand Final and got ‘pipped’ in extra time. Moving on 27 years to 4th August 1992 Ken Macaulay, Stuart Hill and Peter Mapledoram were all present at the initial meeting of the Camden Juniors. Then in 1993 our first Junior Team, the Under 17s, contained their sons Duncan Macaulay, Lindsay Hill and James Mapledoram. Ken Macaulay never got to 100 games but his son Duncan was most likely the first Camden Rugby Junior player to chalk up the milestone of 100 Senior games for the Club. Even now, on most Fridays, you will find Ken working on our Grounds, Stuart doing repairs, Dave whipper snipping around the fences at our Club Facilities and Bryan relating stories (all true) of events and characters which made the Club what it is. Out of the original team (attached) William ‘Billy’ Inglis, Phil ‘Lizard’ Peters and David ‘Yo’ Black all played over 100 games for the Club. John ‘JD’ Dounan coached for several years including our 1983 First Grade Grand Finalists while Tony ‘Rat’ Thornton coached First Grade for 5 years including our 1985 and 1989 Grand Finalists. Please enjoy listening to our 1975 Podcast as Ken Macaulay, Stuart Hill, Dave Black and Bryan Herd discuss how it all began. https://drive.google.com//1_G9aGbLYB_2yDARvF5hflmJoW0/view And visit our 1975 Archive page to learn more. http://www.camdenrugby.com.au/archive/1975

05.01.2022 THE BIRTH OF THE GOLDEN OLDIES IN THE 80s PART 1 This is a true story. The events described took place in Camden & surrounds last century. At the request of the survivors the names have been preserved.... Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred. It would be correct to say that the Club’s first Golden Oldies in the 80s were both illegitimate and illegal, in that many were under the age of 35 and were fit, as they trained at least twice weekly and played on Saturdays. Initiated by the grandest of Grand Rams, Dave ‘The Beast’ Mundy and played at the Club’s picturesque home ground at University Farms, Theresa Park. A feature of the early days of the Golden Oldies were the frequent bus trips to Eastward, Parramatta & the annual trips to the Test Matches at the Sydney Football Stadium or Sydney Cricket Ground. These trips would start with a 10am game at Drummoyne Oval against the Drummoyne ‘Dirty Reds’. It was on these trips and in these games where legends were born & others had their legendary status rise to unassailable heights. One such character was Ray Crossley, the former NSW Beach Pillow Fighting Champion, whose reputation was enhanced and several volumes added to the ‘Chronicles of Ray Crossley - What I did & what happened to me’. Others to feature strongly in these times were the big Scotsman Burnett Blyth, Terrence ‘the erect one’ Stiff and Dave ‘the player’ Brown before he became Dave ‘the referee’ Brown, just to name a few. I can’t ever remember going on one of these trips without the 48-seater school bus being completely full. In fact, so popular were they that we had to hire a 65-seater bendy bus & even filled that. Just one of numerous, still told, stories from those early days was when Ray Crossley standing on the sideline, of a wet and muddy Drummoyne Oval, while Camden was taking on the Dirty Reds, when the speedy Drummoyne winger, running at twice the pace of all other players, took off on a 70m run down the sideline. Ray then hit the researcher/writer, who was standing next to him, in the chest and said ‘hold my beer’. As the winger approached Ray dived into the field of play bringing the winger down with a copybook around the bootlaces tackle. Ray was a hero of all except the speedy winger. He got his beer back and spent the next 13 hours at the various Pubs, in the bus and at the Test covered in mud from head to toe. Most of the modern day ‘moves’ of the Golden Oldies were on display back in the 80s. From the attached photos Referees dressed up and down, vertical scrums, long lineouts, short lineouts, defending the posts (by scaling them) at all costs to prevent the opposition scoring a penalty goal, conversion or field goal and having the prop forward ‘ferret’ into the middle of the scrum to secure the ball. - Peter McBride

02.01.2022 Spotted at Camden Rugby Park at the Gen Blue U18s City V Country Trials on Sunday was none other than Camden’s 1987 Grand Final winning Prop Forward Tony Roberts. Tony was here to watch his son Jack play 2nd Row in the City U18 team. Tony played 112 games with the Club throughout the 80s. Tall, raw-boned and as strong as an Ox, he would have probably been more suited to being a Second Rower but a shortage of props in the 80s saw him adapt to being a Prop.... Tony played in 5 Grand Final teams during the 80s. Tony’s brother Peter ‘Micky Block’ Roberts also played during the 80s. Peter played 110 games for the Club. A barnstorming No8 who ran and tackled as hard as anyone but often ended up injuring himself as well as many an opponent. ‘Micky Block’ was one of Club’s great characters during those days. Tony and Peter’s parents John and Mary were great supporters of the Club, rarely missing a game their sons played in. John was a Club Patron for several years during the 80s. Tony now resides in the Hunter Valley but like many of us still harbors fond memories of Camden Rugby Club. Despite playing 1st Grade Colts in Sydney at 17 and being the Sydney U/18’s Vice Captain on Sunday, Jack was unlucky not to be selected for the final NSW U/18’s team but has still achieved more than his Dad in his few short years. Camden had 3 representatives in Jack Neich, Luke Platt and Anthony Moataane who represented NSW Country U18s Gen Blue in the Trials which saw City just edge out Country by 24 to 19. Congratulations to Camden’s Anthony Moataane who won selection in the NSW U18s Gen Blue Team. Camden’s 2019 First Grade Coach Doug Ryan is the NSW U18s Gen Blue Coach.
