10.01.2022 HOW OUR CLUB WAS FORMED There is no question we have ourselves a wonderful Rugby Club. There just seems to be a couple of versions of how we got there and who w...ould have thought, at the time, that within 12 months of the Club being formed, we were playing in a Grand Final. Agreed we started in 1975 and present at the first meeting were, amongst others, John ‘Cactus Jack’ Walsh, Ken ’Evergreen’ Macaulay, Stuart ‘Mugsy’ Hill, Peter ‘Maple’ Mapledoram and Peter Goodwin. A Committee was formed. The President was Ken Macaulay, Secretary Stuart Hill and Treasurer Peter Goodwin. A Coach John Walsh was appointed and by seasons end a Best and Fairest Player in David Peter Russell Black. We only had one team, which played in the Third Grade Illawarra Competition. We also made the Grand Final and got ‘pipped’ in extra time. Moving on 27 years to 4th August 1992 Ken Macaulay, Stuart Hill and Peter Mapledoram were all present at the initial meeting of the Camden Juniors. Then in 1993 our first Junior Team, the Under 17s, contained their sons Duncan Macaulay, Lindsay Hill and James Mapledoram. Ken Macaulay never got to 100 games but his son Duncan was most likely the first Camden Rugby Junior player to chalk up the milestone of 100 Senior games for the Club. Even now, on most Fridays, you will find Ken working on our Grounds, Stuart doing repairs, Dave whipper snipping around the fences at our Club Facilities and Bryan relating stories (all true) of events and characters which made the Club what it is. Out of the original team (attached) William ‘Billy’ Inglis, Phil ‘Lizard’ Peters and David ‘Yo’ Black all played over 100 games for the Club. John ‘JD’ Dounan coached for several years including our 1983 First Grade Grand Finalists while Tony ‘Rat’ Thornton coached First Grade for 5 years including our 1985 and 1989 Grand Finalists. Please enjoy listening to our 1975 Podcast as Ken Macaulay, Stuart Hill, Dave Black and Bryan Herd discuss how it all began. https://drive.google.com//1_G9aGbLYB_2yDARvF5hflmJoW0/view And visit our 1975 Archive page to learn more. http://www.camdenrugby.com.au/archive/1975

06.01.2022 #talktomebro Cup On Sunday 27th September, Junior teams from U10 - U14 across the Illawarra competed in the #talktomebro Cup. Our U10s travelled to Bowral and won their first match v Shamrocks 19-17 but were defeated in their second match v Bowral 20 - 12.... Our U11B & U11G teams hosted the U11s Illawarra teams at home. They enjoyed a successful day, both teams through to the final undefeated. U11G defeated U11B 17-12 in a great game to win the Cup. Our U13s travelled to Kiama for their games. The first match saw the U13s defeat Kiama 41-12. Camden went on to narrowly defeat Campbelltown 24-19 in the final. A big shout out to Caleb Boylan, Callum McMenemy, Cooper Clarke and Nate Gallagher from our U14s, who without a team entered, still wanted to contribute, play Rugby and catch up with friends across the Rugby community. Illawarra Rugby consented to them filling in for any team short on numbers or had no bench players to fall back on. Well done to all players that competed on the day. A fantastic effort. Congratulations to our #talktomebro Cup Champions - U11G & U13s! #talktomebro To start the conversation about youth and male suicide. A great cause that the local teams are supporting, teaching young athletes about protecting their well-being and also checking in on their mates. Everyone is at war with something different. 02.01.2022 Camden Juniors Part 2 1994 to 1997 After successfully entering our first Junior team in the Illawarra Competition in 1993, there was real enthusiasm within the ...Club to build on the initial success. The big Scotsman Burnett Blyth was the most passionate of enthusiasts. A new coach for the U17s was appointed in, everyone’s favourite referee, Dave Brown. Despite the best efforts by many including a Schoolboys 7s competition run from 1993 to 1995 by Peter McBride and street stalls manned by the parents and players, securing players was the biggest hurdle. The Club had to be content with a sole U17s team for the first 3 years. The arrival of the Halse family from Western Australia via New Zealand in January 1994, added real momentum. Richard Halse was a dynamo and was ably assisted by Burnett Blyth and Vic Mooney. Richard had a Van which held 7 players, while Vic had a Tarago which seated 6. So, transport was not an issue. Riki and Daniel Halse were both born in Donnybrook W.A., which is amazing in itself, particularly, if you have ever seen Daniel play!!! Justin Le Good, along with the likes of Peter Simpson, Peter Hemming, Rhys Jenkins, the Caines brothers, the Halse brothers, Steve Brennan, Jay Younger, the Mooney brothers Robert, Richard and Matthew, amongst others, have fond memories of being thrown in the back of the Halse Van and playing at the various venues about the Illawarra in the mid 1990s. Mostly they played short with more than half the team underage. Interestingly Riki Halse said it took 2 years to win a game, whilst Daniel Halse said he played U17s as a 13yo and did not win a game for 4 years. But it wasn’t actually that bad! Riki said that one year they had to win the last game to make the Semis but unfortunately lost. Richard Halse also coached Illawarra Junior teams and again the Halse family Van was put to great use. Interestingly also was that Richard owned and ran a Tractor Business in Minto and was responsible for sourcing the Club’s Ferguson Tractor. The Club’s current successful U12s Assistant Coach Mark McInnes played in the Club’s first U15s team along with his brother Paul who was 18 months younger. They coerced their school mates, mates on the school bus, Rugby League players until eventually they had the numbers to form a team. Mark could not remember winning many games but they all fell in love with the Rugby experience. Mark also recalls there being a very good U13 team which had a couple of ‘big blokes’ in Adam Pearce and Gavin Holder, along with Alastair Le Good, Troy Macrae, Nathan Prior, Jonathon Garrick, Nathan McMahon R.I.P., Ryan O’Hare, Drew Hammond and a host of others. Some of the Club’s coaches during the mid to late 1990s included Chris Donnelly, Greg Grinham, Duncan Le Good and Matt Searle. Despite the lack of numbers, the Club was starting to produce some high-quality players and in 1996 Riki Halse, Rhys Jenkins and Richard Mooney were selected in the Peter McBride managed Sydney South-West Schools team to compete in the NSW State Championships at Nelson’s Bay. Three proud parents in Richard Halse, Gareth Jenkins and Vic Mooney drove up to Nelsons Bay on the last day of the Championships to witness their sons being victorious in winning the final of the State Championships against a Tim Rapp (future Waratahs halfback and current NSW General Manager of Rugby) inspired Hunter team. Riki Halse was subsequently picked for NSW Combined High Schools and in the next few years played for Eastwood and represented NSW Country. Sadly Richard Halse passed away in 2005 after a long battle with Cancer. His Wake was held at Camden Rugby Park. His 4 children Karen (then pregnant with first daughter Jessie), Trish, Riki and Daniel at the time were playing in the same Oztag team together. Rather than forfeit the game, it was moved, played and won at Camden Rugby Park during the Wake. Since Richard’s passing there are now 8 Halse Grandchildren, of which 6 have already played or are still playing Juniors for Camden. The Halse family have and continue to make a huge contribution to the Club and is a story in itself, as is that of Daniel’s daughter Caitlyn. Mark McInnes was this years U12s Assistant Coach, his son Cooper played in the team. Karen Halse was the Manager and her daughter Louise played in the team. They weren’t a bad team either. They played in the Sydney Competition and finished first. So, the seeds and tough goings in one generation are reaping great rewards in the next generation. Richard Mooney, was newly married but did not have his own kids at the time, but spent 4 years coaching our Juniors from 2006. He said that those years, although at times challenging, were the best of his Rugby involvement. Gareth Jenkins was the Manager of the recently featured 1985 First Grade Team and described by the Legendary Brian Peacock as his ‘Little Welsh Tart’. The Researcher/Writer would like to acknowledge the input given at the time and by talking recently with many of those featured. In particular Val Halse. There are many named above who are worthy of a story and will hopefully eventually feature. Camden Juniors Part 3 is currently being researched. We're updating the archives! If you have any photos or stories to share on this topic, or anything else, please email [email protected]
