12.01.2022 We need to talk about ...COLIC !! Colic is a generalised term for "stomach pain"...and there are potentially hundreds of causes....Hundreds . The pain can cause the camel to roll , kick and bite at flank , and be generally uncomfortable ....and just like in horses it needs to be treated thoroughly and aggressively. Veterinary treatment includes , sedation , pain relief , IV Fluids Always , stomach tubing with possible fluids and then of course the diagnostics : rectal exam, r...umen fluid analysis and faecal egg count testing .By collecting samples we start to gather the clues whereby we can make a diagnosis . REMEMBER THOUGH IF YOU CANNOT GET NEAR YOUR CAMEL - THE VET CANNOT TREAT YOUR CAMEL Not everywhere has a purpose built camel crush like this one , But if your camel can " Hoosh" ...then it can be treated well and recover well . This guys name was Henry and he made a full recovery by the time I left the farm ...up and eating .

12.01.2022 So Some days are diamonds and other days are total ...... This day was a combination of both . Doing what I love ( operating on and working with camels ) but being completely covered in all sorts whilst doing it . This was a castration day of some large Bulls . Ideally when operating on camels , I prefer doing most procedures " standing".... I Can only do this safely in the Vet Crush we designed and fabricated .This is so I can avoid any complications with a general anaesthetic such as aspiration of rumen contents when they are anaesthetised . When needed I will give them a general anaesthetic and drop them . All surgery is followed with vaccination , anti inflammatory drugs and antibiotics .Gives these big old boys a second chance . Just in time for Valentines day too I Guess ;) See more

05.01.2022 Camels are complex creatures with their biology AND nature and as we learnt from Dr Margie Bale, they aren’t immune to diseases and bacterial infections that ar...e life threatening! Margie shares with us, from her own Camel Vet practice, on the most common issues in infections & disease in camels & how she’s combating this with vaccinations EVEN though there are no such products as Camel Vaccinations due to the lack of industry (sad, we know!) 02.01.2022 Just Before QLD lockdown ....Had the pleasure of meeting this big guy yesterday .What a UNIT .Gorgeous docile Bull camel .Yes he is now 2 stone lighter .Surgical Castration .Under a general anaesthetic, but up and about in 30 mins with some pain relief on board .Ok so he is a bit sedated in these pics ...but he was this cuddly before hand too I promise. We are always extra careful with " ruminants, pseudoruminants " under general anaesthetic with aspiration of rumen contents. I have a special wedge I use to keep their head elevated during the procedure , as well as a stomach tube just in case .
