22.01.2022 No, they are not mating. :) https://twitter.com/i/status/1308964280893493248
22.01.2022 Deb and i will not be available for relocations today as we will be in Northam attending a funeral. :(
21.01.2022 Often we get calls/messages from people wanting an ID on various reptiles. Unfortunately, sometimes they have met the end of the shovel before ID is given, usua...lly out of fear... Most people aren't sure what's dangerous, what's not, what's a lizard, what's a snake etc. While we are happy to help we also reccomend you visit places like: Armadale Reptile Centre Western Australian Reptile Park Peel Zoo Greenough Wildlife & Bird Park By visiting your local reptile park, you can familiarise yourself with the reptiles that may live near your home. Both centres have hands on experience, and give you a chance to ask all those questions! Don't let fear rule what you do with your shovel! Photo: Allan Fisher
20.01.2022 Another great snake behaviour video from Queensland.
20.01.2022 This is a very well written and explained story, what happens to the body, and what to do/not to do, when bitten by a venomous snake. Your life may depend on it, due to some misconceptions.
19.01.2022 I just came across this. It was posted by someone in Ferndale and since we get asked about these (supposed) snake repellents, thought i would share it.
15.01.2022 Busy day, but managed to fit in 2 relocation calls. The first one was in the back of Roleystone, but even with the people keeping an eye on it, the snake had slithered out of sight. The second one was at the Serpentine-Jarradale Shire office, where a dugite made it's home under some slabs by one of the back doors. After lifting a few slabs nice and quietly, it presented it self and though not happy, was bagged, relocated and released in a great habitat, away from people and pets.
14.01.2022 As you may know, or not know, snake sighting slow down during the colder weather period. This short article has a great explanation what happens with the snakes and the reasons why. Happy reading.
13.01.2022 The stories we hear the most are..... a Tiger snake chased me......... Check this out to dispel that myth. :)
13.01.2022 A video of a different kind. :)
13.01.2022 I'm sure we have posted this video before, but doesn't hurt to post again as it is a great bit of info about the misconception about "i was chased by a snake". It is a short video and definitely worth a watch. The fact it has an Eastern Brown in it, doesn't matter as this is relevant to the behaviour of ALL snakes in Australia. https://www.facebook.com/abcperth/videos/847222558943188/
13.01.2022 Some interesting information how venom travel through the body, should you be bitten by a venomous snake. Contrary to popular belief, it does not enter the bloodstream at the location of the bite. Read the article to get an understanding how it works and what/what not to do. :)
12.01.2022 You can call the Wildcare Helpline on 94749055 for the number of a local Reptile Relocator in your area.
11.01.2022 Not sure if we have shared this video before, but here is something different. Stu posted this about 2 red bellied black snakes fighting, not mating.
10.01.2022 Deb got a late call for a suspected dugite tonight. This one was at a property on the boundary of Harrisdale and Canning Vale. Turned out to be a yearling Tiger snake. It was a cute little thing, born around March/April this year, so not very big, but highly venomous, nonetheless. The lady of the house was extremely happy that her yard was once again safe for her and the kids. The fact it was getting dark gave her a lot of concern as she tried a lot of relocators, but it was...n't till she got hold of Deb, she finally found someone able to come out. We come out any day or time, which she now knows, so before we left to relocate the tiger snake, she already had our names/numbers in her phone under "snake catchers", lol. :) One happy family with the knowledge her back yard is safe again once more. :) See more
10.01.2022 Here is an updated list of relocators by suburb. (Click on the link). This page was not our work, so credit goes to the page owner. :) Bear in mind, that most relocators cover a suburb & surrounds. In our case we do Armadale to Gosnells, Roleystone, Bedfordale, Byford, Piara Waters, Oakford, Seville Grove, Haynes, Camillo, Champion Lakes and everything in between. Sometimes even going outside these areas. ... https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1699191633593766&id=508014886044786
10.01.2022 Just a heads up regarding any snake removal requests......... Deb and i will not be available for any relocations today, Friday the 23rd of Oct, Sunday 25th and monday 26 due to prior commitments, which will take us out of the area. After those days, we should be back to normal.
10.01.2022 On last Wednesday night we had out last call out for 2020. A lovely couple in the back of Kelmscott had a dugite in their garden bed. This was around 10pm, so good to see they spotted it and due to the fact they kept an eye on it's location, it was soon spotted. :) The down side was the snake, it absolutely did NOT want to be caught, lol. Perseverance paid off and got it bagged to be taken to a better area without any people or pets around. :) Time of night means nothing to snakes, which goes for us too, so we come ot ANYTIME day or night. The attached video isn't the best, but you can just see the dugite when it was released, straight after it was caught.
09.01.2022 Unfortunately we won't be available for relocations today. A few of us from our social club are doing a "Smile Ride" with a young man with cancer, which hopefully will put a Smile on his face.
09.01.2022 Best of all, being a python it is non-venomous and can be found locally up in the hills. In WA, the species are called South West Carpet Python's and are harmless. They like to climb up into the trees and come down at night to hunt for food, like mice, rats and lizards.
09.01.2022 Yesterday we had a call from a lady with a young child in Byford. She was a bit stressed as she had a small dugite in her garage and didn't want it to end up in her house. We attended and after a search, located it, doing it's best to be invisible. :) Once we got it contained, it was smiles all around. After a coffee and a bit of a talk about snake behaviour, it was taken to a much better place, away from people and pets. :) A big thank you for the coffee and donation tow...ards fuel, which keeps us on the road. They now have our numbers in their phones, so no more chasing around for a relocator. :) A small video of the release of the hatchie dugite. See more
07.01.2022 THE DUGITE (Paeudonaja a. affinis) is one of 9 brown snake species in Australia. On average snakes cause around two human fatalities per year in Australia. Brow...n snakes have a bad reputation as they are attributed to the majority of these deaths. In the Dugite’s case, this bad reputation is undeserved. In my experience, I find them to be very shy snakes, preferring to flee when encountered by anything larger than them. That being said they, will defend themselves if cornered, harassed, stepped on, or attacked. The Dugite’s are the most common snake removed from Perth backyards, accounting for about 80% of relocations, yet they have only been attributed to 2 deaths since 1980; both elderly people over 70 who didn’t seek medical attention post bite. If Dugites have learnt how to coexist with humans so well, shouldn’t we offer them the same respect? The European honey bee, horses, cattle and even domestic dogs kill more people in Australian each year than snakes, yet we don’t go around shooting people’s horses and dogs or killing bees with shovels. Next time you see a snake, don’t treat it like a pest that must be killed because you think it’s more dangerous than it really is. Instead, treat it as you would a honey bee; keep your distance and let it play its role in nature. Alternatively, call a snake catcher to have it safely relocated. PRINTS AVAILABLE
05.01.2022 These 2 videos by Stuart from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, are absolutely brilliant. He made it into 2 parts, where he shows what happens when you agitate a dangerous, venomous snake in part 1. He than explains what to do and backs it up in video 2.
05.01.2022 So sad this kills so much wildlife. :(
05.01.2022 Remembering Steve Irwin. 14 years ago today. :(
04.01.2022 An app for phones being worked on and planned for release next year. Looks interesting. https://7news.com.au//critterpedia-the-snakes-and-spiders-
04.01.2022 Snakes don't like hot, 40C days, so like us, they prefer to be inside a nice, cool house. This dugite, born last year, judging by the size, found it's way into a house on Saw St, Mt Richon. Fortunately, the lady of the house kept an eye on where it was last seen and it was still there. After catching it and a bit of an discussion, explaning snake behaviour, what happens if bitten and how to treat it, took it to a nice habitat, away from people and pets, and sent it on it's me...rry way. :) Due to being retired, we are available most of the time on very short notice. We also come out on night calls, as we don't need to get up early to go to work, with the exception of Monday's and Friday's when we volunteer at the Armadale Reptile Centre. Even then i am available. The biggest trick is, if possible, to keep an eye on the snake from a safe distance, preferably in the shade with a drink of water for YOUR well being. This gives us the best chance of catching it.
04.01.2022 Our first call out for 2021 came from Champion Lakes this morning.a nice sized dugite was spotted by the home owner. He boxed the snake in to stop it from escaping, which made the relocation much easier. This is not always possible, so the best thing is to keep an eye on it from a safe distance in a nice shady spot, out of harms way. :) It was relocated away from people and pets to hopefully live a long, undisturbed life.
03.01.2022 This is valid for the whole of Australia.
02.01.2022 A brilliant documentary put together by Ross McGibbon. If this 30 minute video is the only one you ever get to watch, it will be worth it. So much can be learned about venomous snakes, their behaviour and the importance of their existence. Hopefully this can alleviate some of the fears caused by a lot of misinformation found on the internet, etc.
