24.01.2022 We expect to meet as usual on Sunday 22 March (a benefit of a small church!). If you usually attend a church that won't be meeting due to coronavirus precautions then you are welcome to join us. You might like to view our website https://camira.church to read an explanation of our meeting style.
22.01.2022 What is singing for? There are only a few references to singing in the New Testament. Jesus and the disciple sang a hymn before the crucifixion (Matthew 26). Paul and Silas sang hymns of praise in jail (Acts 16). In addition there are two passages that give teaching about the purpose of singing.... Ephesians 5:15-21 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. Colossians 3:16-17 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. Listing the details of singing in these verses: speaking to one another making melody with your heart teaching and admonishing one another being thankful to God This gives me the impression the purpose of songs is to help each other teaching and admonishing (warning). Combine this with the instruction in 1 Corinthians 14:26 that everything we do is for edification (building up). Songs are a way we can help other Christians to live the Christian life. As a side note, what these teaching passages do not say is that the purpose of singing is to worship God.

10.01.2022 Why do we use songbooks? Many churches have moved to using songs projected on the screen, usually meaning selection of songs is restricted to a small number of people. We continue to use a songbook. Why? 1 Corinthians 14:26 says When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. (my emphasis)... Chapter 14 gives principles for when the church meets together. That is the context of verse 26. If each one is to make a contribution including songs (psalms were songs originally) how can they do that if they don’t have access to words? A song book is an easy solution.
10.01.2022 For those that don't know, my Dad and two brothers were martyred in India 20 years ago while my family were missionaries there. Dad had been there for 34 years,... my parents met and lived their entire married life there and all three of us children were born there in India. Mum and I chose to forgive those responsible for their murders, something only possible because of the love and forgiveness we have experienced from God through Jesus. There has been a movie made about the story surrounding those events called "The Least of These: the Graham Staines story". I went to the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday night to see it at the preview there and though emotional, enjoyed watching it. It is being released in Event cinemas around Australia on May 16th and I heartily recommend people go and see it. https://www.theleastofthesemovie.com.au/
08.01.2022 We were able to continue meeting today because we have a great outdoor area with plenty of room, allowing for correct social distancing requirements. Guest speaker was Dan Leister (https://www.afes.org.au/profile/dan-leister) from Evangelical Students at University of Queensland.
