25.01.2022 Content I published as part of my role as an Associate Instructor at WithYouWithMe, a great organisation dedicated to resolving Veteran underemployment.

25.01.2022 Why it can be good practice to make space for whingers in your team. I want to tell you about one of the most valuable lessons in leadership I ever learned. Twenty three years ago I (a farm girl from the boondocks at 24 years of age) had earned the privilege of being responsible for the care and welfare of 55 soldiers and Army gear & equipment valued in the millions. ... I was (said the voice in my head) out of my depth and making a complete mess of everything. My soldiers were whingeing to me about everything - all day - every day (and sometimes at night). One day I found my Boss (an insanely busy man) sitting beside me on a crate of truck parts "chewing the fat about nothing much at all". I was terrified he was going to call me out and tell me straight up I was useless. The conversation went like this: Him: "You look worried all the time. What's going on?" Me: "Sir, my soldiers are really unhappy. They are complaining to me about everything. I don't know what to do." He said: "Keep listening to them. Don't stop them. Soldiers complain - it's what they do." And then the real bell ringer! "You only have a problem if they stop talking to you." Workers who are comfortable to "whinge" to management know that they have a safe space to communicate ideas for improvement. Most of the time a worker who is communicating problems up the leadership structure can be a motivated driver for improvement and change. "Whingers" sometimes just need to be given the opportunity and (most important) sufficient guidance. Of course some people really are just whingers. The difficulty lies in turning the negative "whinge" into a positive driver for change and improvement. You as the team leader have the responsibility to decide which "whinges" require action and which ones can be filed for later reference. Love, Camouflage Cowgirl.

22.01.2022 I've never been so scared in my life - not before or since. Not in East Timor, not Adventurous Training, not when I had a serious horse riding wreck requiring major spinal surgery. I mean truly knee weakening, innards loosening, raw fear. 22.01.2022 So excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with this amazing organization as an Assistant Instructor on the Data Analysis course. Check out their great courses in Cyber Security, Robotic Process Automation and the Data Sciences. All online. No experience necessary.

22.01.2022 Thrilled to be invited by WithYouWithMe to the role of Assistant Instructor on the current Data Analysis course. I love coaching. It's such a great way to learn and help others.

21.01.2022 For a Silent Veteran who had mostly avoided facing anything to do with the military the telecast of the Invictus Games in Australia kind of shook things up. 20.01.2022 Doing volunteer duty today as an event penciller. I like to volunteer. I always learn something new from seeing new perspectives.

20.01.2022 It happens every time I take them out of the box. Do I do it this year or not? I'm talking about my Active Service Medals - my war medals. Do I put them on? Do I march in the parade? Toss a coin. Ignore the result. Spend days trying to decide.... Without fail every time I have worn them some wonderful, well meaning old gentlemen has (as kindly as possible) tried to indicate to me in some fashion that I am wearing them on the wrong side. Only "real soldiers" wear them on the left you see. The decision on whether or not I march in the ANZAC Day almost always boils down to how strong I am feeling on the day. Do I have the strength to stare down a life long case of imposter syndrome? Can I ignore that bastard little voice that tells me I don't deserve to be in the spotlight? Can I muster up the strength to be kind to the old gentleman and (instead of snapping "they're mine a******e) say "they're mine Sir, my overseas service was in East Timor". To be fair, I always enjoy the delightful conversation that follows, and always make a new friend. I can tell you a woman wearing her own medals in the ANZAC Day Parade in a tiny country town can never be anything but the focus of everyone's curiosity. "Bloody hell - do I have lipstick on my teeth?" If a woman is wearing medals on her left side - over her heart - they are ornaments as precious to her as her wedding ring. They were not given to her - she earned them. Ignore the bastard little voice. Camouflage Cowgirl

19.01.2022 These days I think I would have made things easier on myself and everybody else if I could have handed my managers a manual on how I work differently to the average employee. It might have saved us all a lot of misunderstanding. I'd like to hear from you if you are a Veteran working in tech and want to tell your story. Keep an eye out for our upcoming podcast. 12.01.2022 I so agree with this. Fixing it so employees can focus on what is most important to your organisation is well worth the effort.

01.01.2022 I first saw the word "Hackathon" and thought it might have something to do with clearing scrub. You - know - a bunch of people get together to hack away at weed eradication. I saw the term "Pen Testing" and thought "don't they test the Pens before they leave the factory?"
