25.01.2022 Merle Thornton and Rosalie Bogner’s 1965 protest against the ban on women drinking in public bars marked a pivotal moment in the Australian women’s liberation m...ovement. After the bartender at Brisbane’s Regatta Hotel refused to serve them, Merle and Rosalie chained themselves to the bar and refused to leave until removed by police. Their brave stand led to a repeal of section 59A of the Queensland Liquor Act. More than five decades later, Ms Thornton has received an honorary doctorate from The University of Queensland and a pledge named in her honour. University staff can take the ‘Merle Pledge’ to commit to requesting gender equity as a condition of their participation in panels or conferences. ABC News looks at Merle Thornton’s legacy and the great work being done by the University of Queensland https://ab.co/2UAMPZb ABC News is also championing the representation of women through their 50:50 Project. The project aims to increase the contribution of women as expert commentators and contributors, and develop content that women find relevant and interesting.
