25.01.2022 Five pilgrims have just returned from a 7 day walking retreat in South Australia. We were pioneering the 'Australian Ignatian Trail' from Gawler to Sevenhill. This territory covers some of the land given into the care of the early Jesuit fathers and brothers who arrived in South Australia in 1848. Our daily walking and prayer put us in touch with the spirit of St Ignatius and those early Jesuits who travelled great distances on foot, and with the memory of the first peoples of the land which is now very much changed since the early 19th century. We were blessed with beautiful scenery and very kind weather. We are now organising to make this pilgrimage available to the public by next year.

25.01.2022 Stephanie Dowrick is facing the slow death of our church with honesty - and with hope. She writes "there is another Catholic church also, far from the pomp, posturing and power: quieter, yes, but undoubtedly alive. And not just alive, but growing, refreshing, questioning; unafraid of doubt, tentativeness, good humour; unafraid of difference and diversity, and certainly unafraid of Jesus’ call to love." 25.01.2022 The news of Pell's conviction brings to my mind images of the statues of erstwhile powerful leaders in communist regimes being brought down in the late 1980's. Anger is vented, an old regime is denounced, and hope springs up for new life. In our present culture, which projects little but evil or irrationality onto the Christian churches (and Islam too), the due process of the law (marked by impartiality and 'innocent unless proven guilty') is put under stress (see Fr F Brenna...n, http://www.eurekastreet.com.au//truth-and-justice-after-th ). Perhaps this is the cost of ensuring greater safety for all children from now on. Archbishop Coleridge of Brisbane preached at the closing mass of the Summit in the Vatican on Prevention of Child Abuse: "In abuse and its concealment, the powerful show themselves not men of heaven but men of earth, in the words of St Paul (1 Cor 15:47). In the Gospel, the Lord commands: Love your enemies. But who is the enemy? Surely not those who have challenged the Church to see abuse and its concealment for what they really are, above all the victims and survivors who have led us to the painful truth by telling their stories with such courage. At times, however, we have seen victims and survivors as the enemy, but we have not loved them, we have not blessed them. In that sense, we have been our own worst enemy. The Lord urges us to be merciful as your Father is merciful. Yet, for all that we desire a truly safe Church and for all that we have done to ensure it, we have not always chosen the mercy of the man of heaven. We have, at times, preferred instead the indifference of the man of earth and the desire to protect the Church’s reputation and even our own. We have shown too little mercy, and therefore we will receive the same, because the measure we give will be the measure we receive in return. We will not go unpunished, as David says, and we have already known punishment." See more

21.01.2022 Last Friday St John's primary school staff all went for a contemplative walk with the BwGiN team in the Banyule and Yarra Flats (Heidelberg). For some the unaccustomed silence was very challenging, for others a blessed relief! And God blessed us with excellent weather. The BwGiN team can tailor make Nature walks with God for any group or organisation.

20.01.2022 The annual 30 Day retreat has begun with 11 seminarians undertaking the Full Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. Please pray for them and for their directors. This means the Centre is extra quiet and prayerful as the new Director, Michael Ryan sj, starts in his role. Michael comes from the Ignatian Retreat Centre in Sevenhill, SA, where the Jesuits grow their wine.

20.01.2022 While a lot of faith practice (like going to church) is not immediately appreciated by children, Ignatian spirituality certainly can be! https://www.ignatianspirituality.com//six-reasons-ignatian

19.01.2022 Last Friday a number of Campion Team members joined with 100,000 other people to stand together as one to call for Climate Action from our Government Leaders. It was inspiring to see so many people across the generations who care for Our Common Home and demand change. As one of the school children's banner said "If you were doing your job, I would be in school!"

16.01.2022 Five 'Being with God in Nature' walkers are now halfway on our week's journey to Sevenhill on the inaugural Australian Ignatian Trail. We are treading the trails of Mary MacKillop, the early Jesuits and the indigenous peoples of the Barossa and Clare valleys. We are walking 15 to 30 kms a day through beautiful rural scenery.

16.01.2022 Campion CIS was present at the Mindbodyspirit festival over the long weekend, offering a 7 minute meditation and explaining to people what Ignatian spirituality is. We had nearly 200 visitors. The whole atmosphere was friendly. There was only one other identifiable Christian stall. Meanwhile the Catholic church in Australia continues to invest in its movement towards a renewed future with the Plenary Council which has now publicised the key themes of people's responses to the question 'What does God want of us in Australia today?' https://plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au/

15.01.2022 Uh oh! Less than two weeks to Ash Wednesday and Lent! Have you thought about what 'to do' for Lent? We know the choices: to offer something up that we usually enjoy, to spend more time with God, to do an extra service in some way, choices, choices! If you're stuck for ideas here are some suggestions. http://www.campion.asn.au/wp-co/uploads/Into-The-desert.pdf https://www.ignatianspirituality.com/lent

15.01.2022 Here is a beautiful Easter message from Richard Rohr. With it we at Campion CIS pray all of you God's consolation with the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus the Christ. https://vimeo.com/319507445

10.01.2022 Today is the anniversary of the death of Fr Pierre Teilhard de Chardin sj, who died in 1955. De Chardin may be considered the founder of a movement that today is seeing science and religion (Christianity) entering into a dialogue about the value of all created matter and the ultimate purpose of the Universe. https://www.jesuit.org.uk/pause-for-prayer/326/prayer/nojs

08.01.2022 There are still places available at Campion to hear Fr Frank Brennan s.j. speak on how his spirituality informs his political activity (see ;Events'; March 22, 1.30 pm). Please call reception to make a booking (9854 8110).

07.01.2022 Campion CIS welcomes our latest staff member, Eva, who is our new receptionist. She is from Poland and has worked previously in a Catholic parish.

06.01.2022 listening to podcasts are a great way to pass the time on a tram or a car trip. Reading the review section of Melbourne Catholic has introduced me to many podcasts that touch on faith and life. Two of these are by chatty parents (from the United States) whose subjects are parenting and theological reflection on living as Catholics. Here is an example on the topic of 'how to make decisions'. They are played through itunes for free. This one is #83. https://itunes.apple.com//messy-parenting-cat/id957216506 The other is 'Adventures in Imperfect Living' by Greg and Jennifer Willits. Can you recommend other good podcasts about faith and life?

06.01.2022 Just after Easter, 92 Jesuits and 50 lay partners assembled in Sydney for prayer and discussion. The Provincial, Brian McCoy, delivered the fruit of 2 years discernment with the Province, a Plan for apostolic mission for the next 5 years. Ignatian spirituality is prominent! https://jesuit.org.au/mission-hope-province-five-year-apos/

06.01.2022 For the World Day of Vocations, Pope Francis writes beautifully to all of us: "Two pairs of brothers Simon and Andrew, and James and John are going about their daily tasks as fishermen. In this demanding work, they had learned the laws of nature, yet at times, when the winds were adverse and waves shook their boats, they had to defy the elements. On some days, the catch of fish amply repaid their efforts, but on others, an entire night’s work was not sufficient to fill ...their nets, and they had to return to shore weary and disappointed. Much of life is like that. Each of us tries to realise his or her deepest desires; we engage in activities that we hope will prove enriching, and we put out on a sea of possibilities in the hope of steering the right course, one that will satisfy our thirst for happiness. Sometimes we enjoy a good catch, while at others, we need courage to keep our boat from being tossed by the waves, or we are frustrated at seeing our nets come up empty. God in fact desires that our lives not become banal and predictable, imprisoned by daily routine, or unresponsive before decisions that could give it meaning. The Lord does not want us to live from day to day, thinking that nothing is worth fighting for, slowly losing our desire to set out on new and exciting paths. If at times he makes us experience a miraculous catch, it is because he wants us to discover that each of us is called in a variety of ways to something grand, and that our lives should not grow entangled in the nets of an ennui that dulls the heart. Every vocation is a summons not to stand on the shore, nets in hand, but to follow Jesus on the path he has marked out for us, for our own happiness and for the good of those around us." http://w2.vatican.va//papa-francesco_20190131_56-messaggio See more

05.01.2022 Earth Day is celebrated on April 22. It’s followed closely by Arbor Day, which falls on the last Friday in April. Campion CIS marked these days with a tree planting event. Pope Francis has written: "For indigenous people, land is not a commodity but rather a gift from God and from their ancestors who rest there, a sacred space with which they need to interact if they are to maintain their identity and values." [146] We, too, as late comers to Australia, wish to find our identity and values with Creation

02.01.2022 The Province has rolled out a new Code of Conduct and last Friday the directors and staff at Campion CIS were inducted into it. The Code addresses four areas: children, stewardship of resources, equity and respect, and accountability for actions. It applies to all ministries in the Province. We at Campion are particularly aware of those who come to us with a vulnerability. We also continue to operate under the codes of spiritual directors and Givers of the Exercises. A copy of the Province Code will be placed on our website and is available at reception upon request.

01.01.2022 Do you have a statue or image of Jesus, Mary or one of the saints in your home? It reminds us that those who 'have finished the race' (in Paul's term) are encouraging us to live every day in the love of God. Kate gives us a glimpse into her kitchen. https://laptopontheironingboard.wordpress.com//mary-help-/
