Please welcome...Anna Pave-U'Ova. Pavey has been an athlete since childhood climbing the jammer ranks of VRDL since moving from New Zealand to join VRDL’s charter in 2016. Pavey has skated in many WFTDA Championships and Playoffs for the All Stars as well as captaining the Queen Bees in 2017.... Pavey has represented Team Aotearoa (New Zealand) twice. Pavey loves to juke, duck and jump around blockers for success and puts so much enthusiasm into making sure people have fun on the track. With a long dance career under her belt Pavey has a Diploma in modern Jazz and over a decade of ballet experience. After discovering the unpredictability of career choices in later stages in life for dance Pavey changed to roller derby as a sport outlet in life and loved every moment of it. I love the constant strategy adjustments, fast paced gameplay and camaraderie that roller derby brings. There is so much aroha (love) in our roller derby whanau (family) which has kept me hooked on this sport. Pavey is known in tournaments for her impromptu off skates warm up dances with the VRDL teams and fusing roller derby coaching with dance and body awareness. She excels in strength and conditioning workouts, sharing more understanding of your own body awareness and out of the ordinary ways of teaching jammer skills and remembering strategies. Pavey has targeted skill sets in jammer and offense on track relationship building and strategic methods to set your team up for successful offensive plays. I can’t want to coach you all the things! So, put on your happy face and go out there and be nice! The concept may have originated from Ms. Julie Thompson and it was meant to serve as an incentive for others to acknowledge their appreciation for acquaintances or strangers and to promote a respectful attitude and an attentive demeanor.... We can all celebrate by simply opening a door for an old lady, giving up a seat to a pregnant lady, helping a child cross the street, stopping to ask if a tourist is lost and needs directions, offering to carry a suitcase up the stairs and generally making a small sacrifice. But most of all, we have to reflect on what others need and how we can help. It can make a big difference!' 08.01.2022 Introducing our next Camp Skate Riedell Coach for 2020 ... Kelly Walker "Kelly Walker (formally Modern Warfare) started derby is 2010 at Western Australia Roller Derby (WARD). She had absolutely no skating experience but picked it up quickly, crediting her mother's love of roller skating being passed on. She's been hooked ever since. She started her skating journey for the WARD homes teams, ending up on the Wards of the Skate A travel team. After playing against the Victorian... Roller Derby League All Stars at TGSS 2016, she finally decided to take the leap and move to Melbourne. Starting her journey with VRDL on the Notorious VIC's in 2017, she worked her way through to the Bees where she won silver in division one at the 2018 TGSS and gold at 2018 B Team Championships in Dallas, Texas. The 2018 season was a big one, as she also made the All Stars roster representing the team at Thin Air Throw-down and WFTDA Championships. Her 2019 season was as a designated offense player where she finished WFTDA Championships with an average positive points of 36.6 points per game, including a plus 47 points during the bronze medal game against Arch Rival. Kelly also runs the Instagram blog, Self-Care in Derby, where she shares tips and ideas around how to incorporate self care while playing roller derby. Kelly loves unpacking wall formations, switching between defense and offense, and the mental challenge of playing competitive derby." 07.01.2022 Introducing our next Camp Skate Riedell Coach ... Lethal! (Leighanne Free) "I began skating as a junior at a recreational league in California in 2007. When I turned 18, I knew I had a drive and passion for roller derby and wanted to go further than where I was at. I made the decision to move to Portland, Oregon early 2017. I got to Rose City with little expectation but big hopes. I absorbed absolutely everything all the coaches there were willing to give. I am incredibly gra...teful for my time there as it taught me the fundamentals of high level roller derby. Once moving to Australia in 2018, I was more driven than ever. The coaches at VRDL taught me how to use my skating skills to support the team I was on and focused more so on the strategic side of roller derby. It was amazing. I was put on the VIC's, VRDL's C team, won TGSS Div 2 and went on to the B team to take part of their B Champs Gold medal. In 2019 I was put on the All Stars and have enjoyed every challenging session, frustrating time, and difficult opponents (AKA the All Stars). I am a heavy defensive player. As much as I love a good pick on the start, crushing jammers is what I enjoy most by far. I would like to teach people how to best use their body and weird shapes to keep jammers in the sad place."
