24.01.2022 Join CCNSW LIVE on Daffodil Day, Friday 28th August at 1pm, for a panel discussion How is COVID 19 impacting cancer in Australia.

24.01.2022 In 2020 Reconciliation Australia marks twenty years of shaping Australia’s journey towards a more just, equitable and reconciled nation. We strive towards a more just, equitable nation by championing unity and mutual respect as we come together and connect with one another. Cancer Council NSW is committed to improving cancer outcomes in all communities. We also recognise that Aboriginal people experience a higher burden of cancer with higher mortality rates. This week is a g...ood reminder to think about, how are we championing the delivery of equitable and safe cancer services for Aboriginal communities in NSW? Did you know...The Cancer Institute NSW engage representatives from the Aboriginal community to develop culturally-appropriate cancer information resources, such as the video below on breast screening.

24.01.2022 What! Why is this allowed to happen? The Daily Telegraph reports that public health spending across Sydney’s western epicentre is $800 per person less than in other regions despite the area’s growing population, leading to huge disparities in cancer treatment across Sydney. Figures showed that the budget for the South Western Local Health District is set at $1700 per resident 30% less than the $2500 budgeted for those who live in the Sydney Local Health District. It is a similar story for the Western Sydney Local Health District, which receives $1750 per resident.

22.01.2022 Many breast cancer clinics are increasing access to hypofractionated radiation, in what advocates say is a silver lining of the coronavirus pandemic. Using this technique means less time in treatment, by days and sometimes weeks, and fewer side effects with the same long-term health outcomes. Do you know anyone that has used hypofractionated radiation, what was their experience?

21.01.2022 Thoughts on shade structures over a public children's pool. North Sydney Council has yet to solve the problem of how to protect the children's pool from the sun, after ditching plans for a steel-framed shade structure it feared could increase the risk of the plans getting rejected on heritage grounds.

20.01.2022 Today in celebration of #naidocweek2020 we would like to acknowledge the Dharawal people and the Wadi Wadi people of the Illawarra. The Aboriginal people of the Illawarra call their dreaming the Alcheringa. The main creator spirit of the Illawarra is Biamie (from which is derived the word Kiama). Biamie sent his two sons to the earth, one was Duramulun, the law-giver, who, during the dreaming, taught the local people traditional laws and customs related to kinship, totems, religion and social observances. 17.01.2022 Did you know a world first study with Aussie kids has shown your child may be eating an extra 194kJ of low nutritional value snacks, after being exposed to junk food ads. The study found that children didn’t compensate for those extra kilojoules, noting that an extra intake of about 200kJ is likely to lead to weight gain over time. As a corollary, other research has shown that improved nutrition labelling on food products plays a significant role in nudging people towards be...tter dietary choices. 15.01.2022 "When the federal government announced a sweeping expansion of telehealth servicesto ensure ongoing access to care during lockdown, to reduce healthcare workers’ and patients’ exposure to infection, and to support the sustainability of health and medical practicesit was described as ‘the most far-reaching change for general practice in a generation." "Peta Rutherford, CEO of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia, says the pandemic has forced many GPs and specialists wh...o weren’t previously interested in telehealth to step into the space, enabling them to develop a better understanding of its potential and overcome their reservations. 11.01.2022 We partnered with Kate Perkins to not only celebrate Cancer Rehabilitation Awareness Week but also bring attention to the long-term effects of a cancer diagnosis. Well designed exercise interventions can greatly improve adverse effects of cancer treatments but can be costly. The Central Coast Advocacy group want to change this by raising awareness of this issue and understanding what we can do to change it. Cancer treatment can be associated with negative physical side effe...cts, including increased fatigue and pain, diminished cardiorespiratory fitness and strength, and negative psychological side effects, including diminished quality of life, anxiety, and depression. Many of those side effects can be long-term and can affect health-related quality of life, a concept that encompasses subjective perceptions of both physical and emotional symptoms and side effects of treatment. 09.01.2022 As we start to see some ease in COVID restrictions discussions are being raised about 'what sort of society do we want to return to?'. Well, what about a healthier society! One that moves us toward a #cancerfreefuture Let us be reminded by stories such as Kiwi White's below, and others who have faced, and will face, a cancer diagnosis that there is still work to be done and if we are rethinking our futures lets aim for a cancer free one.

08.01.2022 "Cancer does not discriminate. It is a 24/7 disease. When you're in the throes of a pandemic, cancer can seem secondary to everything else going on in the world, but the reality is, right now, we need to prioritize the immunocompromised." 04.01.2022 Act early for our Mob’s health encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to stay on top of their health and to seek medical advice if they have a change in their body that is worrying them. Most symptoms are due to something less serious than cancer, but the earlier #cancer is found, the better. There are a number of ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can consult with their doctor or healthcare worker. In addition to an initial phone discussion, new #telehealth methods are now being widely used, as well as in-person appointments. https://youtu.be/FaHKJ4WkXAs

03.01.2022 The expanding market for online delivery of alcohol, has triggered a rise in the purchase of alcohol for young Australians. These services must be more regulated by the government to ensure stricter measures are placed on online access. There is compelling evidence to highlight the association between alcohol and #cancer. Alcohol is a class one carcinogen, causing cancer of the breast, mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, bowel and stomach. Cancer Council supports the ...proposed reforms to the Liquor amendment (24-hour Economy bill) for improving regulations of online sales and delivery of alcohol. Contact your MP to support this campaign to better protect children and the community from the harmful effects of alcohol.
