25.01.2022 With an uncertain future, due to the imminent unavailability of bowling green facilities, the 90 year old Canberra City Bowling Club this weekend fielded teams in Round 1 of the Bowls ACT Women's and Men's weekend Pennant competitions. City Women's Grade 1 team triumphed over the Canberra North/Yass combination and in the Men's competition's Grade 1 had an aggregate win over Canberra North while the Grade 4 and Grade 6 Teams lost to Queanbeyan and Bungendore respectively. ...Given the unlikely survival of Canberra City it is testament to the loyalty of its bowling membership that the Club has committed to fielding teams in this year's Pennant competitions. Best wishes to all of City's participating bowlers for what will be a memorable and hopefully successful 2018 Pennant season.

24.01.2022 For those CCBC members and supporters who read the Canberra Times article on Pages 2 and 3 last Monday it may be of interest to know what the CCBC Committee actually submitted for publication. While acknowledging the right of the Canberra Times to edit material submitted for publication CCBC President Bob Powell believes the published article did not accurately reflect the concern amongst CCBC members who are facing the potential demise of their Club which has a rich and almo...st 90-year presence in the north Canberra community. "CCBC has been an internal sporting group of the Ainslie Group since 2000 and has had close ties to the "Ainslie Family" since its inception. Canberra Times readers would have gained the impression that, from an Ainslie Group perspective, the project was now contingent upon ACT Government assistance. This is a recent change in the ongoing discussions with the Ainslie Group, says Bob We thank Bowls Australia and Bowls ACT for the support and advice given to us by them in this difficult and uncertain time for Canberra City Bowling Club members." Original Article submitted to CanberraTimes is below.

24.01.2022 Three City Teams thru to the round of eight teams (quarter finals) of the 2017 ACT 60+ Men's Pairs contested by 34 Teams at QRSL today. Congratulations to Geoffrey Brewis/Mick Fogarty, Ken Dowrick/Tony Barry and Peter White/Ian Hueston on winning thru to the finals playoffs and good luck at QRSL tomorrow (roll up is at 9.00am).

21.01.2022 Sadly Canberra City's Men's Grade 6 Team bowed out of the Bowls ACT 2018 Pennant Finals today at Tuggeranong. Team Manager John Howard has provided the following summary of the game: " Hi folks,... Results for sixes today: Rooks lost. 11-26 Barron won 27-22 Wright won 23-14 Total City lost by one shot 61-62 to Queanbeyan. Three terrific games. The big crowd of spectators was agog as scores were level after 15 total ends, then Qbn drew ahead to lead by 13, then City caught up to equalise at 53-53 after 47 ends, then Qbn edged ahead again. City needed a three on the last end to force extra ends; with City holding three shots, the skips had a go: Qbn nudged one in to just edge City out by one shot. Thanks to all players, selectors, members and supporters. See you on a green somewhere. JH" A BIG thank you to John Howard for undertaking the Managerial role for the 6's having missed out on a spot in the final selections. John is a "true blue" Clubman and always willing to step in and lend a hand when it was needed. As can be seen from the photo below John is also adept at making a sometimes arduous task as pleasant as possible. The world of bowls is a better place for the likes of the John Howards.

21.01.2022 QRSL Pairs Champions for 2019. Former City players Karen James and Ruth Moore.

It was to great to see three (3) Canberra City teams supporting another Club's event and two (making it thru to the semis.

Well done to Ruth Moore and Kaz James who played the final, both backing up after winning the Club pairs. It was a great game. Congratulations Ruth Moore, winning her 11th Club Singles. 18.01.2022 Women's Weekend Pennant Update. Canberra City Women's Division 1 Team has made it through to the Preliminary Final tomorrow against Tuggeranong after defeating Belconnen today 2 Rinks to Nil. Play in tomorrow's game starts at 9.30 am at the Weston Creek Bowling Club. The winner will then advance to the Final to be played at Belconnen Bowling Club on Saturday 28 April.... Go City !!!

18.01.2022 Twas not to be ! City's Grade 1 Men's Pennant Team bowed out of the Finals race at the weekend going down to top of the ladder Weston Creek. The City Team put up a credible performance leading on all 3 rinks for a major proportion of the match only to fall short by 18 shots on the big board at the conclusion of play. The City Team should be proud of their participation throughout the Pennant season falling short by only 2 rink wins needed to secure a finals berth. City's G...rade 4 Team, having dropped out of the finals race in previous weeks, went down to Tuggeranong by 5 shots overall despite winning 2 rinks which was unfortunately a repeat of many other close encounters throughout the season. The good news is that City's Grade 6 Team had a win (3 shots overall and 2 rinks won) against 2nd on the Ladder Tuggeranong and cemented their place in the final four. The 6's will play Queanbeyan at Bungendore next Saturday 21 April and if they win will advance to the preliminary final on Sunday 22 April also to be held at Bungendore. But wait there is more good news ! City's Women's Team had a close 1 shot overall loss (1 rink apiece) to top of the ladder Weston Creek but has made it into the finals of Division 1 and will play Belconnen next Saturday 21 April at Weston Creek. Best wishes to the City's Men's Grade 6 and Women's Division 1 teams for this coming weekend's 2018 Bowls ACT Men's and Women's Pennant Finals. 16.01.2022 Our last ever City Ladies Championships has been played. Congrats to the Triples Champions - Sue Lalor, Karen James and Ruth Moore who had a win over Lil Watson, Kay Moore and Barbara Parker. Thank you Queanbeyan RSL for hosting.

16.01.2022 CITY SOARS FROM THE ASHES! In the last ever match in City colours, our champion triples team of Sue Lalor, Karen James and Ruth Moore convincingly won Bowls ACT Champion of Champions Triples final over Tuggeranong at Canberra North this morning. Congratulations girls. But it didn't stop there! Our former City boys, Tony Barry, Benny Hill and Rob Kelly secured the men's title for Canberra North in a last end nail biter over Canberra. Congrats to our former City boys. GO CITY.

16.01.2022 Come down to QRSL this Saturday morning to see the CITY COLOURS flying for one last time. Come and cheer for our City girls this Saturday. Karen James and Ruth Moore have played their way into the semi-finals of the ACT State Pairs, to be played at Queanbeyan RSL Club starting at 9 am. The final will follow the semi-finals. This will be the last time our City Colours will be in competition. Unfortunately for our City Mens team, Ron Hawke and Ken Dowrick narrowly lost their quarter-finals last Sunday by one shot. Well played Ron and Ken.

15.01.2022 STOP PRESS - ABC Radio interview with Bob Powell has been brought forward to 9.00am this morning and is likely to be aired shortly thereafter. Please feel free to share this late change in scheduling.

15.01.2022 Well done to Canberra City's Ladies Division 1 Pennant Team in making it through to the Grand Final against Weston Creek to be held at Belconnen Bowling Club next Saturday afternoon (28 April). City defeated Tuggeranong with a 1 and a half Rink win and an overall margin of 13 shots. Come along and support the City Ladies play their last ever Pennant match for such a proud Club.

15.01.2022 The Canberra City Bowling Club Flag flies at half mast because come 30 June 2018 the Club, through no fault of its own and without a home, will cease to be and entity of Bowls ACT. More on this later.

15.01.2022 For those that missed it this morning (Wednesday 22 November) log onto the Internet @ "ABC Radio Morning Show - Genevieve Jacob" and listen to her on air interview with the Ainslie Group's CEO about the uncertain future of the Canberra City Bowling Club.

14.01.2022 Two Teams from Canberra City competed in the 2017 Bowls ACT Mixed Pairs Championships today. Unfortunately, Ken Dowrick and Loretta Gillespie bowed out in the first round but David and Sue Lalor won both of their games and contest the quarter finals tomorrow morning at QRSL. Good luck tomorrow David and Sue - go City!

14.01.2022 They have may joined and embraced the Queanbeyan RSL Memorial Bowling Club following the demise of their beloved 90 Year Old Canberra City Bowling Club but these ladies have maintained their friendship and competitiveness featuring in the QRSL's 2020 Ladies Pairs Championship Final today. Congratulations to Sue Lalor (Skip) and Lexie Webster (Lead) for their come from behind win against Ruth Moore and Karen James. The game was played in very wet conditions and was poised at 18 All with the last end to play. Sue and Lexie picked up two shots to win 20 to 18. A big thank you to the QRSL for making so many of the former Canberra City bowlers welcome at their new home.

13.01.2022 Who would have ever thought that this day would mark the final day of the Canberra City Bowling Club's (CCBC) existence as an affiliate of the Bowls ACT family. While we acknowledge the viability of bowling clubs in the ACT has always been tenuous, we feel incredibly let down by the Ainslie Football and Social Club (Ainslie Group) for reneging on its agreement to establish CCBC bowling greens at Gungahlin. Sadly, we have witnessed first-hand the power of big business over co...mmunity. The Ainslie Group's harsh treatment of one of its own internal sporting clubs suggests it has lost sight of why it really exists: to serve their community and sporting clubs. One can only wonder where the funds the Ainslie Group had set aside for the Gungahlin bowling greens project will now be diverted and how it can publicly justify the now wasted and substantial financial resources, time and effort spent in bringing this project to fruition only to jettison it at the 11th hour? Yes, it has been a difficult and unsettling time for CCBC members, who have fought tirelessly to keep the 90 year old Club intact and retain its long, proud and successful history in the national capital. Our community is broken but our bonds will last forever. Farewell CCBC

11.01.2022 The last ever Canberra City Bowling Club's Womens Pairs Championship Final was played this afternoon. It kicked off at 2.30 pm after pennants. Congratulations to the finalists - Maureen Hunt and Sue Lalor, Karen James and Ruth Moore. It was an extremely tight game, with Kaz and Ruthie getting over the line in the last couple of ends. Well played to all four players. Sensational final ladies.

09.01.2022 Canberra City Bowling Club (CCBC ) members gathered formally for the last time yesterday evening as the reality of the Clubs 'forced demise' kicks in. Although a sad occasion the comradery evident amongst bowlers of a Club that stood the test of time for 90 years was clearly evident and many memories were shared over drinks and dinner. President Bob Powell spoke briefly to the gathering and then handed the reins over to Emcee Cliff Gilbert who presided over the remaining for...malities for the evening including presentations for the few Club Championship events that were able to be scheduled. The gathering also heard from Club Patron Doug Blake who shared some of his memories over the 66 years he has been an active member of the CCBC. As always Cliff did a superb job with the Slide presentation depicting the proud history of the CCBC. And to cap off his duties for the evening he composed the following Poem which summed up the feeling of this momentus occasion and is worthy of sharing with the wider bowling community. WHEN THE LAST BOWL CAME TO REST When the last bowl came to rest on the Canberra City greens We shook hands, then took a moment to ponder what it means. We had a final drink of course in fact we had a few For we had to drown our sorrows when we bid the place adieu. When the last bowl came to rest and we left our hallowed greens They came and ripped the place apart with their picks and big machines The shades and benches went, and the other stuff they took Our club was in its death throes and we could hardly bear to look. When that last bowl came to rest, after ninety years or more It seems our history stood for nothing as we were ushered out the door. All those characters and stalwarts, all those champions of the past It was for them as well as us that our flag flew at half-mast. So now, good friends and teammates well be joining other clubs Where no doubt well draw some shots and maybe get some lucky rubs. Yes, well still turn up each week and well still enjoy the game But I just cant help but think that it wont be quite the same. So heres to Canberra City lets raise a parting glass To all whove graced our greens, these ninety years now past, For one thing I know for certain now that last bowls come to rest When it comes to friends and clubmates, Ive been bowling with the best! Well done Cliff - a fitting finale to your steadfast dedication and commitment to the Canberra City Bowling Club.

07.01.2022 Great to see the City uniforms out and about. Former City players Rob Kelly, Ruth Moore, Alan Taylor and Graeme Read winning the Christmas hamper at Canberra Bowling Club. Thanks CBC for putting on another great day.

07.01.2022 Media Alert - if you want to keep in touch with the uncertain future of Canberra City Bowling Club make sure you tune into the live ABC Radio interview with President Bob Powell at 9.40am tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

06.01.2022 There are not enough superlatives to describe today., Mother Nature excelled herself.... and so did all the people from QRSLM bowling club. And to top it all of...f, there was some damn fine bowls to boot! To the victors come the spoils.... Grade 1 Mens Premiers for 2019, Weston Creek! Womens Grade 1 Premiers, QRSLM1! And last but no means least ( and bringing the biggest cheer of all) Mens Grade 3 Premiers Goulburn Railway! Sensational games all round. Commiserations to QRSLM, WC Women and Yass. See more

05.01.2022 Congratulations to Tony Barry (Lead) and Ken Dowrick (Skip) from Canberra City in taking out the 2017 Bowls ACT 60+ Mens Pairs Championship today at Queanbeyan RSL Bowling Club. The City pair prevailed 14 shots to 9 in today's Pairs final (completing the tournament undefeated) and denied the Canberra North combination of Graeme Marks and Kevin Deeves the opportunity for their Club to take out this year's 60+ double (Fours and Pairs). A great win for City and a real morale booster for the Club which continues to punch above its weight at ACT championship and representative level.

04.01.2022 Congrats Norma Gee, Kay Moore, Sue Lalor and Karen James who won the City Fours final in a very close game 22 to 21 over Maureen Hunt, Bev Dowrick, Ruth Moore and Loretta Gillespie. It was a great final girls. Thank you to Canberra North for hosting. Much appreciated.

02.01.2022 Commiserations to Canberra City's Women's Division 1 Team in finishing runner up to Weston Creek in the Bowls ACT 2018 Pennant Grand Final played at Belconnen Bowling Club today. City fell short by 7 shots to the Creekers (41 to 34) with the match ending in one rink apiece. Scores were Ruth Moore's rink 19 to 17 and Loretta Gillespie's rink 15 to 24. Well done to our City Ladies Ruth Moore, Karen James, Sue Lalor, Maureen Hunt, Loretta Gillespie, ... Norma Blunden, Bev Dowrick and Hilary McClure in what was to be the last Canberra City Bowling Club representation in a Bowls ACT Pennant competition. See more

02.01.2022 Very pleasing to see that the core of Canberra City Bowling Club members are committed to ensuring that both Men's and Women's bowlers will be represented in the 2018 Bowls ACT Weekend Pennant Season. If you are a City Bowler and have not committed as yet there is still time do do so.

02.01.2022 A nostalgic day for City's Women's Weekend Pennant Team which played its last home match (ever) at the Club's former Elder Street Braddon premises. The battle between the two longest established Club's in Canberra (Canberra and City) saw the Canberra Team win on aggregate shots scored (by 3) with each team winning one rink a piece. After 90 years and now with no home to continue to conduct social and championship events after 5 March 2018 the Canberra City Bowling Club has no option but to fold at the conclusion of of current Pennant season. A sad time indeed for Canberra City bowlers who are being forced to find new home Club's and break up many long established friendships.

02.01.2022 PENNANT FINALS UPDATE Men's Grade 6 Minor Semi (Elimination) Final versus Queanbeyan at TUGGERANONG on Saturday 21 April commencing at 12.30pm. Women's Division 1 Elimination Final versus Belconnen at WESTON CREEK Saturday morning 21 April.... Go City !!!

01.01.2022 An emotional weekend for Canberra City bowlers with the last bowls rolled down at Elder Street Braddon following the foreclosure of the Bulum Group's licence agreement with the Ainslie Group effective from 5 March 2018. A very sad day indeed that sees City's bowlers without a home and no option but to wind up the affairs of their 90 year old Club which has a proud tradition of competitive and social bowls dating back to 1928. It is now a reality that City's parent Club (the A...inslie Group) has reneged on its promise to inject new life into this heritage icon by establishing bowling greens at Gungahlin following the sale of the Elder Street site to the Bulum Group. The offer of the Ainslie Group to provide financial support to enable City bowlers to pay for membership subscriptions and uniforms at another Club is little comfort to the demise of a significant part of bowling history and participation in the ACT and one less community based sporting club. So, through no fault of its own the Canberra City Bowling Club will bow out of the Canberra scene effective from 30 June 2018. In the meantime and with the support of other Bowls ACT affiliate clubs Canberra City's Men's and Women's Teams will fulfill their Weekend Pennant commitments. Mixed results for City's Pennant teams last weekend with the Men having wins in Grade 1 (against Yass) and Grade 6 (against Tuggeranong) and a loss in Grade 4 (against Tuggeranong) and the Women going down to Norths.
