17.01.2022 "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." (Matt 5:7, NIV) This week in yoga we explored, what does it mean to be merciful, and how can I be more merciful in my life? ... Mercy includes forgiveness, but is more than forgiveness, it is compassion in action. Mercy is not a feeling - it is a deliberate effort of the mind and of the will. Its about deliberately identifying with another person, until we see things as they see them, and feel things as they feel them. This passage is easy for us to say. But how do you develop a merciful heart? God is our model of mercy. Mercy grows in us as a result of our personal experience with our merciful God. We begin by experiencing His forgiveness. And when we study His Word with understanding, we see that every act of God, from creation until right now, is also touched by His mercy. This is why Psalm 103:17 says, "The mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting."

17.01.2022 A wonderful talk on Christian nonduality with advice on contemplative practice.

16.01.2022 Yoga is on break. Join us for our first class back on Saturday 8 October, 8:00-9:10am at the Church of Christ Hall, 1 Parkinson St, Weston. All are welcome.

16.01.2022 'Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven' (Matt 5:10) Those who devote their lives to God and living by God’s values are inevitably going to challenge systems that are based on other values. ... God’s realm of love, righteousness, truth and justice challenges systems built on the opposite values of power, greed, oppression, falsehood, and the exploitation of others and creation. This week we consider our response to persecution, how we can come from a place of loving-kindness and prayer, and yet be steadfast in holding to what is right.

15.01.2022 Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted (Matthew 5:4) Its our nature to want to avoid pain. And yet here is a verse that promises that even in our deepest pain, our mourning, God is present and close. In this verse Jesus invites us to a total reliance on God that may not have been possible in the good times. Jesus promises that each of us will be comforted by the presence of God, who walks with us in our pain.... In sorrow, we are driven to the deep places of life and a new strength and beauty can enter our soul. Sorrow can also show us the essential kindness of others who reach out to us in our need, and bring us deeper and more honest relationships and friendships. We are also led through our experiences of pain to become comforters to others. The word that Jesus uses for comfort also means to encourage or to urge. There are so many people in our world who are grieving over the deaths of loved ones, or are in physical pain or struggling with chronic disease or mental illness. People are hungry, homeless, persecuted, and without hope. We become truly compassionate to others through our experiences of pain, since we have walked in their shoes and know their pain and sorrow first hand. For reflection: Where am I being asked to allow mourning to bring me closer to God and others?

13.01.2022 Sneak preview: this term we're doing something really exciting in our yoga class. The Beatitudes are teachings of Jesus recorded in Matthew (5:1-12) and Luke (6:20-23). They are an invitation to a way of living that brings true happiness and both inward and outward peace. The Beatitudes call us to a radically new way of being when we centre our lives on God. These teachings call us to the deepest of joy as we find our true identity in our relationship with God.

11.01.2022 Thanks all for sharing a beautiful class yesterday, introducing the Psalms with Psalm 1.

08.01.2022 Laurence Freeman is in Canberra this Saturday for a meditation event - come along.

07.01.2022 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:3). We become poor in spirit when everything we rely on falls apart. We might lose someone close to us, or a dream or ambition, the security of a job, our health, or the support of someone we relied on. In these painful times, in this poverty of spirit, we learn to redefine our attachments. We learn not to rely on the usual things that our culture relies on to define one’s identity: wealth, status,... possessions, and even other people. All of these can be taken from us, and we learn that God alone is the only enduring one. This beatitude can be paraphrased as I need help, I can’t do it alone. Being poor in spirit leads us to humbleness before God. I invite you to explore the meaning of this in your practice today.

07.01.2022 This week we will focus on yoga poses to aid digestion. So much of what we take into our bodies and our minds isn't what we need... We'll explore some of these poses to help us focus on what we do need to take in, what we really do hunger and thirst for - our Lord Jesus Christ.

06.01.2022 The Greek word meek can also be translated as humble. It is not being a doormat. Meekness is having strength, under control like a mighty horse who could be wild and powerful, but instead is trainable and comes to stand quietly, still retaining with all his strength, but under control. Meekness arises from being centered on God. It is a fruit of being pure in heart, of living out God’s will in all aspects of our daily life. Meekness toward others implies loving-kindne...ss and gentleness of spirit. There is also meekness toward God, when we are so open to God’s guidance that we do not reject it even when it challenges us to change or to do something that we personally dislike. Meekness helps us live a true humility and makes us teachable. In meekness, we come to trust in God, that what we do need to know will be revealed to us, as we need it, and that walking with God is taking only one step at a time in faith.

05.01.2022 Met up with the amazing interns from LifeCity Church today to talk about yoga. Really inspiring bunch of people bringing about God's plans in this city.

05.01.2022 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matt 5:6). What do you hunger for? What do you thirst for? What is it that fills you? This verse makes me realise that unless I’m hungry for what’s important to God, I’m not going to be full, I’m going to be empty. ... ‘Righteousness’ is a funny word to use these days though. When Jesus uses the word ‘righteousness’, he refers to living in accordance with God’s desires for us, to be in right relationship with God and with others. Jesus asks in this Beatitude whether we want a deeper relationship with God as much as a starving person wants food, or as much as one dying of thirst wants water. And yet what do we fill up with? Junk food, junk entertainment, junk relationships When what we really need is spiritual food, and we find it in Christ’s presence. Question for reflection: For what do I most hunger and thirst? How much do I long for a closer relationship with God?

05.01.2022 Welcome back to Christian Yoga this Saturday, 8:00 - 9:10am, Church of Christ Hall, Weston (1 Parkinson St). This term we are exploring worship in movement and stillness, through the book of Psalms. If you have a favourite Psalm (or part of) please send it through!

05.01.2022 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God(Matthew 5:9). What does it mean to be a peacemaker? First, we accept God’s gift of peace ourselves, the inward peace that we know when we live our lives in Christ’s Living presence and according to God’s guidance. We have peace within ourselves and are given purity of heart when our whole heart and life is given over to God. From this overwhelming experience of the abundance of God’s love, we are led to b...e loving to others even if this is costly to us. QUestions to reflect on this week: 1. Have there been times in my life in which God’s love has brought me to a place of internal peace? 2. In what ways am I led to be a peacemaker in my home life? At work? In my community? In the wider world?

02.01.2022 Reflections from this week's verse, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." (Matt 5:8) In Jesus, we see what it is like to be pure in heart. He took on human nature and modelled a life centred on God. He was constantly in touch with God and did God’s will in all things. He accepted lowliness and poverty. He had a particular regard for those rejected by others; the ones that others rejected and did not love the poor, the prisoners, the sick, and the women and children. To become pure of heart is to have all aspects of our lives centred on God - our thoughts, desires and actions. Question for reflection: How can I bring this verse into practice in my life? Which is, how can I be more like Jesus in my heart?
