19.01.2022 As of Friday 7 February 2020, the ACT Conservator of Flora and Fauna, Ian Walker has made the decision to maintain the closure of several of Parks and Conservation managed areas until further notice. The closures, due to the damage from this summer's devastating bush fires, include many of the ACT's nature reserves and campgrounds. CCA is currently putting together our annual outdoor climbing program in light of the extensive closures. A comprehensive list of closures is here...: https://www.environment.act.gov.au//ongoing-park-/_recache

18.01.2022 Update on Park closures: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2408079092835740&id=1725180037792319

18.01.2022 Booroomba Rocks update: ACT Parks have kindly agreed for CCA to conduct a survey of the fire damage to the Booromba Rocks area, which we will do on Friday 19 June. CCA provided ACT Parks with a Cliff Inspection Report of Booroomba Rocks after the January 2003 fires, and this report went a long way to having Booroomba Rocks re-opened after those fires.... Please remember that this part of Namadgi National Park remains closed, and CCA conducting a survey of the cliff is not a green light to recommence climbing there. The attached photo of Booroomba Rocks was taken in February 2020 by Chris Knight of Canberra Helicopters. Zac Zaharias, CCA President

18.01.2022 Slowly but surely ...

14.01.2022 We're starting a new comp, in light of so many nearby outdoor crags being currently indisposed... What do you all think?

13.01.2022 First Nations sub-committee for CCA As a result of a number of popular climbing areas in Australia being the subject of Traditional Owner claims under heritage/cultural protection banners, the CCA has recently established a First Nations sub-committee to undertake research on Indigenous cultural lore and how this impacts climbers. As well, the sub-committee will take time to examine lessons learned from the Grampians, Arapiles, Nowra and other climbing hotspots. While we ...don’t have any immediate areas of concern in the ACT, it is prudent for the Club to take the time to be better informed for any future claims that may arise in the ACT. If you would like to be involved, please drop us a line via our website (https://canberraclimbing.org.au/contact-us/) or by email ([email protected]).

13.01.2022 CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: As a precautionary measure against the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the ANU is cancelling all public and social events from Monday 16 March until the end of semester one (Saturday 20 June). This includes all CCA General Meetings, including the one scheduled for this week:... https://www.facebook.com/events/199816834569911/

11.01.2022 Some of the CCA committee members will be having dinner together at the Limestone Kitchen, AFC, pre-meeting. Please feel free to join us. The booking name is CCA, for 6pm. We will have some old mountaineering books for sale at the meeting, for $2 each. As well, CCA T-shirts (without the Canberra Climbers' Association title under the logo on the front these were the reject pile of T-shirts) will be on sale for $20. During the meeting, CCA President, Zac Zaharias, will give us an update on Booroomba Rocks access.

10.01.2022 Update on hangers and ring bolts at the top of Cave Crack route at White Rocks - The bolt with the hanger above Cave Crack has been removed, and replaced by two bolts: one bolt is beside the anchor bolts on Abseil Ledge and the other bolt is on the other side of the block (the track side) near the wide crack. The new arrangement allows the safety line to be clipped to a new bolt on Abseil Ledge, by lying on the top of the crag and reaching over to clip the bolt. The other en...d of the safety line is clipped to a new bolt near the wide crack on the track side of the crag. You need about 6m of rope for the safety line. More information about climbing at White Rocks, including a downloadable climbing guide, is available on our website at https://canberraclimbing.org.au/climbing-guid/river-crags/

08.01.2022 Booroomba update. The CCA is in the process of getting clarity from Parks as to the way ahead. We have been through this before after the 2003 fires. Booroomba was closed for 12 months, mainly due to risk of dead trees falling down and hitting people. We did a comprehensive cliff inspection and surprisingly very few routes were affected. The main damage was the loss of vegetation on belay ledges and loose rock. Tree belays had disappeared so more reliance on placing your own anchors. We will keep you posted but for the moment the Park is closed until further notice. Please don't go and climb there until the all clear is given. The attached photo of Booroomba was taken by Chris Knight of Canberra Helicopters. Zac Zaharias CCA President.

05.01.2022 Hey all, please note that although clicking on the "Going" or "Interested" buttons for CCA outdoor events posted on our Facebook page is helpful for us to gauge the general interest in that event, as well as communicating your intention to your friends, it DOESN'T actually register you as a participant for that event. Your place on the event is not confirmed until you REGISTER your interest directly with the event coordinator, the details of whom are provided on our website (a link is provided with each outdoor event). Cheers and happy climbing, CCA events committee.

04.01.2022 Blue Lake climbing weekend is going ahead. 8 people registered. Being outdoors is certainly safer than going to the Mall. Just practise good hygiene at all times and social distance on belay ledges. Best to sleep in your own tent when camping and avoid sharing. For those going, have a great weekend.

04.01.2022 The CCA completed an inspection of Booroomba Rocks last Friday, thanks to ACT Parks for access. In summary, the fires were not as intense as the 2003 fires on the forested side between the carpark and the top of the cliff, but significantly hotter on the cliff side, particularity in the Middle rocks area, the Northern slabs and Snickers wall. The North and South Buttresses and Central slabs are clear. I'll progressively post photos with a bit of a narrative. These ones show some of the more popular routes on the Northern Slabs. Thanks for the CCA members who generously volunteered their time. Zac Zaharias CCA President

02.01.2022 We are proud to say we got through the Orroral Valley bushfire without losing any colleagues or friends and we don’t want to ruin that streak now. Namadgi Nat...ional Park is closed until further notice as the fire has caused significant dangers, including: Burnt falling trees Falling rocks and unstable hillslopes Damaged roads and walking tracks Exposure, after you realise all the directional signage has burnt and you’re now lost. Thinking of heading out to Namadgi for a weekend adventure? DON’T just don’t. Find a park that is less likely to cause death or injury at bit.ly/findaparkACT and in the meantime our #ACTparks teams are working together to return our beloved park to a safe condition.

02.01.2022 Update on CCA T-shirts MEN'S T-SHIRT REPRINT - The CCA T-shirts arrived in early December and were distributed to those who were at the Capital Brewery Xmas drinks.... Unfortunately, the CCA logo on the front of the men's T-shirts was incorrectly done (the logo was a disproportional size and did not have the text Canberra Climbers' Association under it) and so they had to be reprinted. The women's T-shirts were fine. The reprinted men's T-shirts have now arrived and those that paid postage were mailed their T-shirts last Friday. Hopefully they will arrive in the mail before Christmas. If you did not pay for postage and would like to swap your incorrectly logo-ed T-shirt with a reprinted one, please contact us and we will forward the pick-up details to you. DISCOUNTED T-SHIRTS WITH INCORRECT LOGO - We also now have 27 shirts (XL x 1, L x 9, M x 17) with the dodgy CCA logo for sale at a discounted price of $20 each. Please contact us if you'd like to buy one. UNCLAIMED ORDERS - There were two orders from unidentified members as follows: Doug Marmion M Callum M If that is you, please contact us for pick-up details.

02.01.2022 Park and reserve closures are in place following bushfire and flood events over the Summer period and due to COVID-19. Namadgi National Park and the Bimberi Wilderness area remain closed for public safety reasons. Fire and storm activity has caused significant damage to these areas. ACT Parks and Conservation Service are working to remove dangerous trees and fix key infrastructure over the coming months to enable these areas to be reopened. They will endeavour to keep the com...munity updated on their efforts to reopen these areas. CCA has ongoing engagement with Parks to do a survey of rock-climbing areas within the burnt out areas of Namadgi NP. Namadgi Visitor Information Centre is also closed until further notice. All other ACT parks and reserves, including the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, remain open. ACT Parks and Reserves closures are listed here: https://www.environment.act.gov.au

01.01.2022 The easing of COVID-19 restrictions and reopening of some ACT open spaces means that the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve has been reopened to visitors as of 16 May 2020. Rock climbing and bouldering within Tidbinbilla NR include Gibraltar Rocks, Bandito Wall and Snake Rock. Details of climbing and bouldering routes can be found on thecrag.com website at https://www.thecrag.com//australian-capital/area/781789407 The Upper Corin Road beyond Woods Reserve is still closed.... Namadgi National Park and the Bimberi Wilderness area remain closed for public safety reasons, as fire and storm activity has caused significant damage to these areas. Please be mindful of the COVID-19 restrictions that are still in place for outdoor areas: https://www.covid19.act.gov.au/prote/groups-and-gatherings
