25.01.2022 We had the @HopeMarsMission covered from all angles with antenna Deep Space Station 36 #DSS36 during today's communication pass.

25.01.2022 This is a very cool way to use a giant deep space antenna! Reminds us of Mr Squiggle

24.01.2022 As a storm was passing over the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, lightning flashed in the nearby hills. The video shows it at normal speed and then in slow motion to capture the action. The antennas themselves have lightning protection and are well-earthed, so even if they are struck, we can keep on operating. The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is a part of NASA's Deep Space Network and is managed in Australia on their behalf by CSIRO, Australia's nationa...l science agency. #Canberra #weather #storm #clouds #lightning #DSS43 #nasa #csiro #jpl #space #science

23.01.2022 Deep Space Station 43 - Azimuth Test Another test, another view. The antenna's moving structure can do a 410 rotation on the base before it needs to go back the other way. Cables in the heart of the structure that carry power and data are mounted in a cable wrap that provides the slack needed to allow the antenna to turn without pulling the cables out from their connectors. Once the limit is reached, the antenna rotates back again before being set up for its next activity.... Being able to do more that a 360 degree turn, means we can point anywhere in our skies to communicate with spacecraft. The upgrades include new transmitters and receivers on the 48 year old antenna which will be used to support dozens of robotic spacecraft exploring the solar system and beyond, as well as future human missions to the surface of the Moon and eventually Mars. The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is a part of NASA's Deep Space Network, and is managed in Australia by CSIRO - Australia's national science agency. #space #science #nasa #mars #construction #astronomy #telescope #radiotelescope #communications

23.01.2022 Great news everyone! Deep Space Station 43, the only dish in the world that can send commands to @NASAVoyager-2, has re-established contact with the spacecraft after an 8-month hiatus while the antenna has been undergoing an upgrade. #DSS43 CSIRO #csiro #space #science #voyager #nasa #jpl #universe #interstellar #spacecraft #voyager2 #exploration #streetsign

22.01.2022 Deep Space Station 36 (foreground) and Deep Space Station 35 (background) are both in communications with @OSIRISREx and we are currently receiving data from the spacecraft's high gain antenna. #ToBennuAndBack Dare we say "Pics or didn't happen!" ... #space #science #nasa #jpl #csiro #asteroid #bennu #landing #samples #canberra #antenna #dss36 #dss35

21.01.2022 About 2.5 months to go before the upgrades to Deep Space Station 43 are complete. #DSS43 One by one we are commissioning each of the systems and performing precision pointing calibrations for the antenna's 70 metre wide, 4000 tonne moving structure. #DSS43 #nasa #space #science #dsn #csiro #canberra #mars #dss43 #astronomy #planets

21.01.2022 Next major milestone for the big dish, Deep Space Station 43 #DSS43 will be tests of its azimuth and elevation drives due to start in the next few weeks. In the meantime, we're removing scaffolding & equipment that has been in place since the upgrade project started in March. #DSS43 #nasa #science #construction #space #communications #radiotelescope #mars

19.01.2022 GREAT NEWS EVERYONE! Our Visitor Centre and Deep Space Cafe will be re-opening for the holiday period. We will re-open from Friday 11th December to Sunday 31st January. New opening hours: 10am to 4pm daily. Closed 25&26 December. See our website for further details: www.cdscc.nasa.gov

18.01.2022 It's Friday the 13th ! You'd think it was just another day at the deep space tracking station, until you turn around and look out your office window at the 70 metre antenna dish standing outside... ...and then you see this!... We know that spiders can be big in Australia, but this is ridiculous. #FridayThe13th #SpaceMenagerie

16.01.2022 Nearest thing to SpaceX and ElonMusk visiting the station today with a lot of Tesla owners stopping by for a break on their tour around #Canberra. Special shout out to Mick Gentleman who joined them. Thanks for stopping by. #space #science #cars #tesla #spacex #mars #model3 #Canberra #travel

15.01.2022 While Deep Space Station 43 has been undergoing upgrades, there have been extended periods when the antenna remains upright. During these times, rain water collects in the subreflector dish at the top of the antenna. When the dish is then moved in elevation, the water comes out pouring over the dish surface and creates a waterfall effect. This elevation tip happened as a storm was also passing through the area. 13.01.2022 While our visitor centre and Deep Space Cafe won’t be open for the October holidays, you can still come and see our dishes and learn a little bit about our role in space exploration with these outdoor signs next to the carpark. | #space #exploration #science #nasa #mars #radiotelescope #canberra #planets #universe

13.01.2022 A compilation of timelapse videos of the first in a series of test for the elevation drive system on Deep Space Station 43 (DSS43). The dish had been in an upright position since its upgrade project began in March 2020. The dish can go from an upright position and then over on its side so that the leading edge is only 1.5 metres off the ground. The entire move only takes a few minutes with the drive motors moving the antenna at a speed of 0.25 degrees per second. While it has... been in the upright position, the 9 metre wide subreflector near the apex has filled with rain water. As the dish tips over, it creates a wonderful waterfall effect. The 70 metre wide, 4000 tonne moving structure of the antenna will be put through its paces as the project advances toward DSS43's return to service in early 2021. The upgrades include new transmitters and receivers on the 48 year old antenna which will be used to support dozens of robotic spacecraft exploring the solar system and beyond, as well as future human missions to the surface of the Moon and eventually Mars. 12.01.2022 The calm before the storm. A rain and electrical storm approaches the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex over the hills of the Tidbinbilla Ranges. The antennas have lightning protection and are well-grounded in the event they are ever struck.
