25.01.2022 There is something very satisfying in watching horses graze in green paddocks with a full dam!!

25.01.2022 Important update for TSS forms and horse owners. It’s great to see that the system has been altered and made easier for horse owners!!!

24.01.2022 THE INDOOR WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY 14th (this coming) for grooming - please make alternate riding plans for the day.

24.01.2022 We are having issues with our phone line. Please contact us by email.

24.01.2022 Huge thanks to Peter Rocca for the intensive arena grooming he provided for the indoor today - looking flat, fab and ready to ride!!!

23.01.2022 Perhaps the name of the 100 acre paddock dam should be altered to 100 acre paddock lake for accuracy!!! Photo credit - Jessica Newton

23.01.2022 We have had the first sighting of the year for the brown snake at the indoor. For at least the last 6 years there have been ongoing sightings of a brown snake at the indoor. It’s either a residential snake (seems most likely as it gets bigger each year) or its just a great snake hang out! ... Most frequented places of snake enjoyment are: The corner closest to the office building - mostly in the middle of the pathway. The concretes at either end of the indoor Out the front of the jump shed Assuming it’s a residential snake, it has never caused anyone any harm and has always moved itself out of the way and is generally very easy to spot. That being said, if your horse says NO take a moment to look around first - most likely they have spotted snake before you have. (From this point forward it’s probably safest to assume on trails and moving around paddocks, arenas etc that your horse has smelt/spotted/heard a snake rather then lost their forward button). From previous years there is also a regular visitor to the top end of the dirt road (near the entry), who has already been spotted this year. A black snake around the duck pond closest to the office, and another at the dam on the road up the hill. The sand of the round yard and outdoor are also favourite sunning locations! Eyes up and open ladies and gents!!!

23.01.2022 Hi All, Please be advised that ACT ESA is conducting training exercises today - the advice is that warnings will be issued but they are part of the training exercise and will be clearly marked as training exercises.

22.01.2022 Finally enough heat to dry out to outdoor enough for some heavy duty care!!!

21.01.2022 Hi All, were are currently experiencing difficulties with email - if you are trying to contact us please call 62881028 or message the page.

20.01.2022 PLEASE BE ADVISED - we have received this notification from ACTEA Orienteering ACT will be holding an orienteering event at Cooleman Ridge on Wednesday 16 December from 5pm to 7pm. They are expecting around 150 participants, spread out over the entire event. There is no mass start. Courses are predominantly off-track and have been planned to avoid The Bicentennial National Trail and most other tracks in the area, with the exception of the beginner courses, which unlikely to a...ttract more than 30 participants. There will be up to 60 cars parking along Kathner St, adjacent to the The Bicentennial National Trail, with an assembly area at the south-west end of Kathner St, near the intersection with Percy Cres. They have undertaken to notify participants to be considerate of any riders they may encounter. ACTEA has asked them to ensure no one parks near to the cavaletti at the end of Kathner Street and to keep a wide path along the fence line.

20.01.2022 Just a reminder - 1pm today here at CEC.

20.01.2022 Has anyone found a Dublin helmet bag similar to the one below - it was left in the indoor arena last night and has a stand for recording system in it. Perhaps someone picked it up with the intention of dropping it off at the office and haven’t made it that far yet. Owner would be very grateful for its return, its an almost brand new stand. It would be quite safe to be left in the black trunk at the side of the office - if you miss office hours

19.01.2022 Given the glorious weather, some clients may be planning a ride off property. Please be mindful of this activity.

18.01.2022 The new Australian Warning System will see hazard icons change across the country. Bush and grass fire incidents will be depicted with a yellow, orange, or red... triangle depending on the warning level. This means no matter where you live or travel to, the warnings you receive will be the same. The change is based on large scale community research and the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements. #BeEmergencyReady

08.01.2022 Many of you may have seen the multiple Facebook posts and commentary in regard to the requirement for TSS (Transport Stock Statement) when travelling horses in NSW. It is important that all clients are aware of the requirements, and are aware that if they do not comply they may be at risk of fines. Below are two links that have information regarding the requirements - should you have any questions regarding whether your travel requires a document you can contact the informa...tion number in the first link or NSW police. Please don't rely on someone else's interpretation of Facebook comments to determine the requirements. https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au//Transporting-horses-in-NSW-FAQ https://www.facebook.com/llsnsw/posts/1275265269483627

08.01.2022 Well we can honestly say that we have NEVER had a need to mow around the jumps in paddock 8, NEVER - but thanks to 2020 the year that just keeps giving - we will NEVER be able to say that again. We have started the process, which will continue over the next few weeks as time and conditions permit. We’ve also put some new jump poles down there, a couple of extra sets of wings, and cleared away some of the older stuff (some of which will return after a refresh).

06.01.2022 Hi All, please pass this along to any equestrians who may have been impacted by the fires last year!

05.01.2022 Hi All, There is a foot race taking place today and part of the course comes directly across our driveway, where there is also a drinks station. Their course comes off Coleman ridge, around the front of the property, across the driveway and into Narrabundah hill (the reserve adjacent to CEC). There is also red trail markers along their path. ... Please be careful if you are riding in these areas today and over the next few days (as it’s likely the trail markers will stay up). Please be mindful that the runners are in a competition, they SHOULD be given right of way, and it’s not likely that they will be receptive to slowing down, or stopping for your horse to navigate them. Stay safe!!!

05.01.2022 It’s great to see cyclists being made aware of horses on trails and safe approaches. However it’s important to remember that it’s a two way street (or trail as the case may be). As riders we need to be aware of our surroundings, and be cautious of other users. The key word is shared spaces. ... Often situations can be avoided if riders are mindful of managing situations - be aware, give your horses a chance to have a look at the situation. Where possible halt, move to the side and let your horse see what’s happening. A friendly smile will often get a warmer response to a request for space.

03.01.2022 Welcome to FECC FECC is Faecal Egg Count Canberra a new small business that offers testing of horse manure samples for gastrointestinal parasite eggs. FECC is c...urrently only accepting clients from Canberra Equestrian Centre (CEC) as this is a new business and we want to start small and stay focused on our processes and results. In the future the service may be offered to the Canberra region. FECC is open for business as of Friday the 13th of November 2020 and samples can be dropped off in the FECC esky out the front of the CEC office beside the rug rack. We will be having an open day on Saturday the 21st of November in the CEC conference room where CEC clients can drop of samples and have a chat. I have a background in biological and environmental science and spent numerous hours staring down a microscope barrel. Whilst undertaking my studies at university one of my first jobs was to count freshwater macro invertebrate samples and intestinal parasites of grazing animals. Upon my return to Canberra, I started work as an Animal House Technician for Parasitech and the Australian Hydatid Control and Epidemiology Program and ACT/NSW Wild Dog Control Program where again I was exposed to parasite egg counting. Whilst in South Africa working on various game reserve's I also participated in FEC's for African Water Buffalo, Impala and Giraffe. I currently work as a Cartographer and Spatial Analyst. So why have I started FECC? As a horse owner I am interested in my own horse's parasite status and how often I should be worming him, whilst avoiding the over exposure of chemicals to his system. I am also interested in how the weather event of LaNina may affect parasite egg production in horses. And lastly, I wanted to offer a competitive and cost-effective method for other horse owners to find out this information and therefore become better educated about parasites of Australian equines and how routine worming is doing more harm than good. FECC offers Faecal Egg Counting (FEC) $10 per test and Faecal Egg Count Reduction Testing (FECRT) $20 per test.

02.01.2022 Huge thanks to the team at Horseland Canberra for helping out for the 2nd year running with our unusual request and last minute event purchases! We have just dropped Blackie of to his rightful place, welcoming shoppers at Horseland. He was once again rock solid in his performance, and whilst a little reluctant to load (but who wouldn’t be after having a couple of nights at Hotel Realm) he travelled beautifully home! Thanks again Team!!!

02.01.2022 I had a scary incident last night that I have decided to share as a reminder to both drivers and riders. I was driving back up to the house after going down to a paddock and it was just after sunset. As I turned up the dirt road towards the house I very suddenly became aware of two riders, both in dark clothing, both on dark horses and not at all where I expected riders to be. Had I been driving any faster it may have been a very different story. ... Full credit to the horses for remaining calm. Whilst this is my first close call, it is the second close call that I’m aware of in the past 2 months involving cars, horses and roadways and the 5th time I have observed horses with no reflective gear in the dark. As drivers it’s a reminder that we need to slow down and expect the unexpected. As riders we should always be on the equestrian trails and if on the dirt roads in the middle of them and with reflective gear on at night. Even a simple reflective vest will make the difference. When out at night stick to the trails that we expect to encounter horses.

01.01.2022 Which test should you undertake and why?? Let FECC answer the age old question - To FEC, or FECRT that is the question
