25.01.2022 arm - Meaning ‘a sacred inviolable place’ the word harem (arm - ) refers to the secluded women’s quarters in the palaces of the Ottoman Empire. This sheltered place was a centre of devotion, artistic pursuits and often political intrigue. In this concert we explore the traditional and modern sounds of Turkey as well as the sonic possibilities of the new contraforte in the world premiere of Sentinel.... 2021 composer-in-residence Brian Howard wrote Sentinel for the contraforte, or contrabassoon, to be played by Noriko Shimada Book your tickets now: https://cimf.org.au/cimf-2021-events/harim

23.01.2022 CRUMB’S LYRE Wednesday, 28 April 202 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm Verity Lane Market When two strong women get together, one whose alter ego is Madame Lark, the other a Ukrainian born Australian piano siren, then you have colliding worlds of music, comedy and performance art. ... Madame Lark (vocalist Christine Johnston - performer/writer/musician) can make lifelike birdcalls and use an ancient projector to 'teach’ her audience, while pianist Sonya Lifschitz is just as likely to pluck and strum the strings inside a piano, as to unleash her virtuosity on the ivories. They have joined forces on a piece where these worlds deliciously coalesce in Crumb’s Lyre. Crumb’s Lyre is a piece that will simultaneously take your breath away with its mysterious sonorities of George Crumb’s Makrokosmos (1972), while making you laugh with Madame Lark’s audacity and curious imagination. Both Christine and Sonya can’t wait to perform again. Says Sonya of coming to CIMF, ‘there is a sense of community, last time it was just like being dropped into this loving family.’ https://cimf.org.au//christine-johnston-amp-sonya-lifschit

Gordon Hamilton’s new version ‘Recomposed’, to be performed on Saturday May 8 at Fitter's Workshop, gives Mozart’s sketches the Max Richter treatment, throwing new contemporary light on this sacred classic score.
