13.01.2022 It has been almost 3 years since I started Canberra Nosework Training. My passion and love for Nose Work is still the same, that is seeing anxious and fearful dogs coming out of their shell and their caregivers enjoying the activity with their companion dogs. To celebrate, I requested Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin to put my passion in her amazing drawings. I hope you like it. I will be getting this printed in A4 size posters. If your club/organisation/business would like a copy, please let me know by 24th of September 2020. I am happy to post it to anywhere in Australia.
11.01.2022 It was published. Will be in print tomorrow :-). If you have friends or family in this situation it is imperative they seek professional help from a behaviour p...rofessional sooner rather than later. Punishments have no place in any confidence building program so ensure the people you care about arn't getting poor advice from a cowboy. See more
10.01.2022 We do animals a disservice by serving food on a plate. Animals are wired to explore their environment and search for resources, such as food. When they’re expl...oring, their core emotional SEEKING system is activated, and the neurotransmitter dopamine is released. This is referred to as the appetitive mode. Animals fluctuate between being in appetitive mode, while foraging, and consummatory mode, while eating. When in consummatory mode, that dopamine surge is vastly reduced. Why is this important to us, as animal caregivers? Well, feeding your animal in a bowl may be a disservice because it doesn’t engage the SEEKING system. There’s no dopamine fix. No appetitive behaviour. There’s just eating. Consummatory behaviour. Again, animals are wired for appetitive behaviour, so feeding them in a way that bypasses that need is not doing them a service it’s potentially the opposite. This may lead to an increased risk of unwanted behaviour, because they’ll often find an outlet for those highly motivated behaviours somehow.

05.01.2022 Consent tests. How does your animal like to be touched? Touch is potentially a very powerful tool. But not all animals enjoy being touched. Maybe they’re afra...id. Maybe they don’t know you. Maybe you’re doing it wrong. So just paying attention to whether the animal leans into being touched or leans away is important information. Don’t assume that they like what you’re doing - Ask them. Or let them initiate the touching. Hold up your hand so they can rub against it, and see which body part they’re choosing. Watch how they interact with each other, where and how do they touch? Do a consent test. And of course, this applies not only to non-human animals, but the human animal, too..!

02.01.2022 The way our dogs perceive the (olfactory) world is so different from how we see the world. It is through Nose Work and reading our dogs that I starting to understand why they behave certain way. It is so fascinating.
