24.01.2022 Please take the time to read this important article by Canberra local and refugee Zaki Haidari, writing on his experience fleeing persecution but continuing to face a cruel limbo in Australia due to our immigration system. Zaki will also be speaking on a panel called ‘Displaced’ at the Sydney Writers Festival. Book tickets here: https://www.swf.org.au/festivals/festival-2021/displaced/ https://www.eurekastreet.com.au/ar/locked-in-and-locked-out

22.01.2022 25-year-old Zaki Haidari, a Hazara refugee and activist, has been recognised by Australia as a refugee. However, the temporary nature of his Safe Haven Enterpri...se Visa (SHEV) means not only must Zaki reapply every five years for his need for protection to be assessed, but that he is denied the right to apply for reunion with his family. Family separation is a CRUEL policy that the Australian Government inflicts on refugees which, according to a report by the Refugee Council of Australia (2019, p. 5), causes significant mental distress and anxiety. It hinders people’s successful settlement and often impacts on people’s ability to work and study. Read RCOA’s report https://www.refugeecouncil.org.au/family-reunion-issues/ Justice and a Fair Go means the Australian government must END temporary protection visas, provide PERMANENT visas and restore the right to FAMILY REUNION! #Justice4Refugees

21.01.2022 Add your voice to those of thousands of other Australians who will join rallies on Palm Sunday calling for justice and a fair go for refugees and people seeking asylum. Now is exactly the time to build on recent developments to bring an end to the cruel treatment of people who have simply sought protection and safety. Be part of the movement to consign these horrendous policies to the dustbin of history!

21.01.2022 Our Canberra Refugee Support volunteers had a great time at our gardening working bee over the weekend. Our volunteers contribute in so many ways including helping move house, tutoring, helping clients find work, providing transport to get to appointments, etc. Being part of the working bee is just one of the ways that volunteers can get involved and put their skills towards welcoming refugees into our community.

19.01.2022 We did it! $22,336.00 was raised for Canberra Refugee Support in the Hands Up 4 Canberra Appeal. All money will stay in Canberra and will be used for the Geoff McPherson Scholarship Fund and to support Refugee and Asylum Seekers in Canberra.... A huge thank you for all your efforts and generosity. #HandsUp4CBR #CanberraDay2021 #CanberraRefugeeSupport #CRS

04.01.2022 You might be interested in this story recently aired on ABC Canberra radio and featured on the ABC Canberra website. Nan, who is featured in the story, is supported by CRS volunteers and we have other CRS people involved in this excellent venture Stepping Stone Café at Strathnairn.
