25.01.2022 Today is National Celebrants Day. This tour operator is also a celebrant. Happy National Celebrants Day to all 9000 celebrants Australia-wide. Celebrants provide an important role in the getting the legalities of marriages correct. This is often overlooked in the excitement of the day. Celebrants are also very good at holding ceremonies together, particularly sad ones like memorials or funerals. Here’s cheers to our celebrants! #nationalcelebrantsday #celebrantsofinstagram #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours

22.01.2022 To acknowledge NAIDOC week are two artworks in the #canberrasecretstours office. Both by Andrew Highfold from the Tjupurrula people. The first, titled ‘Country’ is a waterhole in flood. The second, ‘Rockhole’ is after the rains when the flowers are in full bloom. I love them. #canberrasecrets #visitcanberra #naidocweek #aboriginalart

22.01.2022 Man’s best-friend can make almost anyone smile and a group is on a heart warming mission to spread joy to nursing homes. Showering residents in affection, pet therapy has shown extensive benefits to those suffering from dementia and alzheimer’s. #9Today

20.01.2022 These visitors from New Zealand enjoyed learning about Aboriginal culture on #canberrasecretstours They are standing on the Parliament House Forecourt mosaic which is based on the stunning artwork by #michaelnelsonjagamara This mosaic is made from 90,000 hand-cut pieces of coloured granite. It is called Possum and Wallaby Dreaming and symbolises the animals (and people) coming in to the meeting place, which is a yarning circle, in the centre. It is part of the pre-European history entry into Parliament House, which of course, is the nation’s meeting place. #canberrasecrets #naidocweek #naidoc2020 #visitcanberra

15.01.2022 The Canadian Flagpole on Regatta Point, shown flying the Canadian flag on Canada Day, 1 July, was felled today - swipe pic - because it was no longer safe. Such a shame. It was a 39 metre single spar of Douglas Fir weighing 7.1 tonnes and was gift from the Canadian Government to commemorate the visit of the Canadian Deputy Prime Minister in 1955. On arrival in Sydney it was submerged in Sydney Harbour for quarantine reasons and then treated in a special chemical bath for thre...e weeks before being brought to Regatta Point. It was so large that when it was transported it was done so on a truck and a trolley as well as a crane to lift it back onto the truck and trolley when it went around corners. What a funny sight that would have been! The flagpole stood at 36 metres, with 3 metres underground. We will miss our ‘Polly’ (the nickname given by those who worked on it. I wonder what they would think about today’s event.) The flagpole was also a landmark for pilots coming into Canberra. Farewell Polly! #flagpole #canadianflagpole #canadaday #canadianembassy #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #localscan See more

13.01.2022 Forrest Fire Precinct is celebrating 81 years of service to the ACT community. It was called a precinct because the fire station was attached to seven cottages for fire station staff. Listen to @12062cc this morning at 11.35 while I talk about this station’s history and the Canberra Fire Museum that stands there today. #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #fireengine #visitcanberra #canberrafiremuseum

12.01.2022 This Lego scale model of Parliament House is popular with visitors. If you look closely, you can see lots of humour within the activities taking place. #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #visitcanberra #localscan #parliamenthousecanberra

09.01.2022 International flag display by night. Commonwealth Place hosts 110 flags - 108 are of countries with which we have diplomatic relationships, the remaining two are the European Union and the United Nations. Protocol states that flags must be taken down before the sun sets, unless they are lit at night. These flags look lovely at night. #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #internationalflags #visitcanberra

08.01.2022 Who is that emerging from the darkness along Menzies Walk by Lake Burley Griffin? It’s Mr Menzies himself. Prime Minister Menzies was instrumental in establishing Canberra in the 1960s. It started when his daughter complained about the lack of footpaths around The Lodge, while pushing her young baby in a pram on the uneven ground. PM Menzies established the National Capital Development Commission to implement Walter Burley Griffin’s plan for the city. And yes, footpaths were part of that. Thank you Mr Menzies. #canberrasecretstours #canberrasecrets #visitcanberra #localscan

07.01.2022 Sampling the wares @labaguettebyrandm a French and Algerian inspired bake house who make everything from scratch themselves using locally-sourced products. 07.01.2022 Aboriginal Memorial @nationalgalleryaus These are authentic hollow log coffins created by Aboriginal artists from Central Arnhem Land in the NT. They commemorate all Aboriginal lives lost defending their land since 1788. Beautifully crafted, they bear the designs of different clan groups along the Glyde River from the inland to the sea. #naidocweek #naidocweek2020 #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #visitcanberra

04.01.2022 I’ve never seen a group cicada hatch before. And so many in my yard. 2020 continues to be an odd year, in many ways. This is a Black prince. This is typically Canberran. Other varieties are found elsewhere. Sometimes the noise cicadas make can be deafening. They can live many years underground to only live two weeks above ground. Guess I’d be really noisy too! #cicadas #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #visitcanberra

03.01.2022 Ruby, Director of Tour Planning is skilled in sniffing out new Canberra secrets. She is also a lover of carrots. She obviously feels neglected in the carrot department, needing to harvest her own. #carrots #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #localscan #scnauzersofinstagram

01.01.2022 Cicadas. Summer. Christmas is coming. Reminders of noisy cicadas from my childhood in the Blue Mountains. Canberra’s cicadas are typically black while other areas have other colours and varieties. The noise they make is created by the males drumming ‘tymbals’ on their bellies to attract females. Cicadas lay eggs in the bark of trees. Nymphs hatch and live underground for one to nine years. (Some species can live underground for up to 17 years). When they emerge from underground, they hatch, their wings dry and their sole purpose is to find a mate and start the process all again. They only live for about two weeks above ground, but during that time, make their presence heard! They feed on tree sap. Cicadas just happen to be my favourite insect. #canberrasecrets #canberrasecretstours #visitcanberra #cicada
