21.01.2022 For your Friday funnies, we are shining a light on hilarious comedy The Season. Sharp as a tack and blunt as a brick, The Season was a real portrait of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture. The Season featured the exciting but all too rare combination of an Aboriginal writer, director and seven-member cast of some of the nation’s most distinguished Aboriginal actors, including Trevor Jamieson (The Secret River) and Tammy Anderson (I Don’t Want to Play House).... Together they delivered this disarming, funny story of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, its passion, and pride.

20.01.2022 They say laughter is the best medicine, so come join Chris Ryan, Frankie McNair, Sue Stanic, Tanya Losanno and Laura Campbell this Friday! Thanks The RiotACT team for sharing https://canberratheatrecentre.com.au/s/thats-what-she-said/

20.01.2022 Meet Brigette Honeyman, our Marketing Coordinator. Brigette has worked at Canberra Theatre Centre for 9 months. Brigette: "I absolutely adore Theatre and feel privileged to have a job in the Arts. This year, despite the virus and shut down, I was lucky enough to see some amazing productions at Canberra Theatre Centre. I squeezed in a few laughs between the bushfires and pandemic when Comedians Kitty Flanagan, Carl Barron, and Russell Brand came to our Theatre back in Feb! ...It will be great to have a laugh post-pandemic at the next Canberra Comedy Festival. During this shutdown period, I have been filming the live streams for CTC @ HOME and have loved working with the techs and meeting local talent! Back in 2014, I completed 2 months of work experience at Canberra Theatre, when I finished my Theatre Media studies. While I thought, I would be working in tech, unraveling cables, pulling up gaff tape, and rigging lights, I was requested to assist the marketing department which redirected me onto the path I am on today, One moment I look back on fondly was during the Media Call of Nutcracker by Queensland Ballet. I met the director Li Cunxin who was humble, well-mannered, and gentle in character. After that, I was inspired to read Maos last dancer and was enlightened by his story. This has not only made me respect ballet as a magnificent art form but learn more about the stories behind each artist. Everyone has a story to tell."

18.01.2022 Throwback to Anything Goes, a musical that adorned our stage in 1994. We re-discovered Cole Porters brilliant way with words and music, while he expressed the disillusioned sense of irony about romantic love and the American way of life around him in the economic and personal tragedies of the early 1930s!

18.01.2022 A flashback to Robyn Archers Australian concert tour back in 1985! Canberra Trust & Greg Hocking & Tim Woods presented Robyn Archer, who was there?!

18.01.2022 https://canberratheatrecentre.com.au//return-to-escape-fr/

18.01.2022 Remember Charlottes Web in 1989? The novel by E. B. White was turned into a production directed by Peter J Wilson who was also an actor, playwright, puppeteer, and designer! Sing out if you watched this in our Playhouse!

17.01.2022 Meet Elysia Fisher, Personal Assistant to Director! Elysia: "I joined CTC on 30 May 2011. 9 years! There are a few productions that have stuck out the most in a my mind was blown way! These include... The Long Way Home. As part of the 2014 Subscription Season, The Long Way Home was the ultimate collaboration between STC & the Australian Defence Force. It centered around helping veterans tell their stories and therefore work through the recovery process of PTSD. This piece of work absolutely went to the core of each and every person and was the raw retelling of experiences in active hostile zones and the recovery that came when returning home. There arent enough words to describe it. Sense & Sensibility That show was insane! The whole thing was a work of art from start to finish! Zero blackouts and set pieces that were literally skidded on and off stage. Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime: I had only heard of this show by name and knew nothing else of it. It was another incredible show. The staging, the story the set The main actors incredible talent at portraying the boy with autism. Having only really worked Opening Nights, The Long Way Home has to get a mention. The opening for this show was intense. This was a show that was attended by every high ranking Defence Person and the organisation, professionalism, and co-ordination that was required made us step up in a way that was far and beyond what we were used to. - Encounters with artists: Tim Ferguson need I say more. I first met Tim when he came to visit Bruce (our then Director) in 2012. Despite it being the first time I had ever met him, Tim talked to me as if he had known me forever. His show Carry a Big Stick (2012) was an autobiographical look at his own life and the challenges and journey of crippling MS. What I have learned from this guy is that perspective is EVERYTHING. He took what was a hugely debilitating condition and turned it on its head. He made his work all about conquering the challenges and owning it. I wish more people viewed life with the same zest that Tim has. Funny moments with other colleagues: - That time Bruce pronounced my name correctly and virtually everyone within earshot went silent before fits of laughter ensued. - That time when we were starting to research and get booster seats and we were discussing requirements in the Production meeting and Bruce piped up (noting the biggest grin) with We can get Elysia to test them. - When Gill was Acting Director and operating out of the Director office and then pronounced my name wrongly (noting it was pronounced exactly the same way Bruce had done it for years) and again the whole office just lost it laughing. I believe that day, we called it The Curse of the corner office Iso activities include: Having enough fun keeping up with everything. Teaching kids music via Google Meets is a new challenge!"

17.01.2022 We hope you enjoyed reminiscing about some of our favourite First Nation performers that have graced our stage. We are wrapping up NAIDOC Week with our final throwback - Barbara and the Camp Dogs. This was a fusion of music and narrative that ranges from punk-inspired explosions of rage to tender rock and soul ballads full of yearning.... It explores the emotional journey of the "sisters and their love and sacrifice for one another" as they embark on a pilgrimage back to regional Australia after news breaks that their mother's health is deteriorating. Daniel Boud

17.01.2022 Mustafa Ewazi will also be joining the panel tonight for RETURN TO ESCAPE FROM WOOMERA. "I was born in Afghanistan. I arrived into Australia (Canberra) as a teenager, around the end of 2012. I went to school in Canberra and now I study Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at University of Canberra on a scholarship. I am also the current President of University of Canberra Refugee Action Club (UC RAC) and Competitions Director at Canberra Law Students' Society (CLSS). My role within UC ...RAC, is to advocate and campaign for better treatment and policy towards refugees and asylum seekers in Australia. We do this through organising educational seminars, funding raising, and Q&A debates with local politicians and policy makers. Similarly, my role within CLSS, is to organise competitions such as mooting, negotiations, witness examination, and client interviews for all law and justice studies students here at UC. A part of my role, is also finding judges for all these competitions and overseeing it. Witnessing what's happening to people in third-world countries and Australia's treatment of refugees, is what drives me to advocate for disadvantaged people. In fact, this is one of the biggest factors as to why I am studying law. I think Australia as a developed country, has a lot to offer to disadvantaged people. But sadly over the years, Australia seems to be departing from its human rights responsibilities shifting more towards a 'populist' style country such as 'Australians first'. I have been public speaking previously. For example, last year, I was invited to join the panel to provide a perspective on refugee policy in Australia. The panel involved President of and ACT Human Rights Commissioner (Helen Wright) as well as politicians who were running for the federal election. I have also been elected to run for the UC Student Representative Council (UC SRC) in the last week's UC election which I won gratefully. I look forward to representing UC SRC." https://canberratheatrecentre.com.au//return-to-escape-fr/

16.01.2022 Heres a throwback and a half to 1966 - No, No, Nanette! This uplifting musical comedy started the nostalgia craze on Broadway while it revolved around the story of Jimmy Smith, and all the trouble he gets into on a summer weekend. It was a show that took the audience by the hand and lead them back to the Never-Never-land of the Twenties for some sweet and silly fun.

15.01.2022 Meet Annabel Scholes! Annabel has worked at Canberra Theatre Centre, since 2013! "One highlight was watching a member of the audience who had an oxygen tank and breathing tube on his face rise up and dance with Angelique Kidjo as she moved through the audience. He lifted his oxygen tank and shook it in time with the music like it was a percussion instrument. She had the entire audience on their feet and it was a remarkable event that could only be experienced live."

10.01.2022 Throwback to the 2013 production of Jack Charles v The Crown! As Australia’s Indigenous people continued to be overrepresented in our justice system, attention turned to a concept known as justice reinvestment investing more public money into addressing the causes of Indigenous offending rather than punishing them after the fact. Jack Charles v The Crown was not simply a theatrical autobiography. After his many years of interaction with the Australian justice system, Charle...s utilised his courtroom experience to launch a politically symbolic trial against the Crown during his trip to Canberra. During this, Jack forged a deeper connection with his Indigenous history and culture and began to reclaim his stolen identity; a sense of hope radiating from within.
