17.01.2022 In June last year, 33-year-old mum of two Jessica was diagnosed with breast cancer. Jessica underwent chemotherapy, followed by a lumpectomy and radiation. It was during that time that Jessica and her husband reached out to 13 11 20 for information and support. The nurses helped us organise a counselling session, which was incredibly helpful as there was so much going on at the time. Through our breast care nurse, we were also referred to Cancer Council SA who helped us to... pay one of our bills. It’s those little things that help to alleviate some of the stress of a cancer diagnosis and helped our family get through it, she said. Jessica is just one of the thousands of Australians who reach out to Cancer Council 13 11 20 every year. If you have been impacted by cancer, or know someone who has, we’re here to help. 14.01.2022 Globally, over 300,000 women die from cervical cancer each year, and close to 90% of these deaths worldwide occur in low- and middle-income countries. In some of the poorest countries in the world, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, yet we know cervical cancer is both preventable and treatable. This week, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a strategy for the global elimination of cervical cancer and implementation of national cervical cancer control plans. 14.01.2022 Going to get a COVID-19 test? Don’t forget the sunscreen! Cancer Council SA supports SA Health’s recommendation to go and get tested for COVID-19 if you have any symptoms or have been in close contact with a known case. We have been actively supplying sunscreen to outdoor COVID testing stations to protect those standing in line waiting for testing, but we also strongly encourage anyone going for testing to be prepared and practice the 5 SunSmart behaviours to protect their skin from harmful UV. Sun protection should be used whenever the UV is 3 and above. Find out more about how and when you should protect your skin: https://qoo.ly/39atx3.

02.01.2022 In 2015, Julie-Ann Rhodes lost her 20 year old daughter Marissa to bile duct cancer and then three years later, her husband Trevor to Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. In 2019, Julie-Ann hosted a National Patio Day celebration in memory of Trevor and Marissa, and to give back to all those Australian families who have been touched by cancer. Everyone who came said how much they enjoyed it and hoped I can make it an annual event. Even if it’s a bit different to last year, I still hope ...to be able to host in some capacity, even its smaller groups staggered throughout the day. I’m committed to keeping the tradition going. I think that my outlook is still really positive. Even though we faced our challenges, I was still blessed with a beautiful daughter for 20 years and a loving husband for 31 years, which is more than so many people have. I know that they would be incredibly proud to know that through sharing their story, I am raising funds to help others. You can read more about Julie-Ann’s story here: https://qoo.ly/39bi6h or register to host your own event at nationalpatioday.com.au.
