17.01.2022 Flat out soaking up a few rays... 6 months ago I was told I might not be around now. So far, so good. The main cancer marker keeps going down. A wholistic approach - de-stress, nutrition, exercise as well as some initial chemo and radiation seems to be all going well. Still a ways to go before this cancer is licked though... Workin on it :)

09.01.2022 Treating rare cancers Earlier this year I found out that I was eligible to enrol in a clinical trial for patients with both cholangiocarcinoma and a specific gene fusion. My oncologist referred me to the Trials Unit at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre who were trialling a new drug called TAS-120. This drug is an FGFR2 kinase inhibitor and is referred to as a type of 'targeted therapy’. This means that it acts in the body in a more specific way than for example, chemotherapy,... which has a scatter-gun approach by killing any cells in the body that are dividing. My results on TAS-120 so far are promising. I've been taking the drug for 5 weeks now and the first CT scan has shown that my tumours have shrunk by 22% and tumour marker is back in the normal range. Side effects such as fatigue and high phosphate levels are manageable thus far. It’s not necessarily a silver bullet but may prove to be a successful treatment to slow the progression of the disease. If you have cancer I highly recommend that you talk to your oncologist about clinical trials that are on offer AND that you review the Australian Cancer Trials website for information about trials that are available. It’s really important that you are informed and proactive as you can’t always rely on the system to work for you. This is especially so with rare cancers which have less research and fewer treatment options available.
