19.01.2022 Once you hear the jingle, it’s hard to get it out of your head. Cancer Council first brought Sid Seagull onto our screens in the 1980s, and today, his message is as important as ever. This National Skin Cancer Action Week, we’re teaming with the Australasian College of Dermatologists to bring him back and encourage all those ‘80s kids who are now parents themselves to stay SunSmart this summer. A lot has changed since the ‘80s, but it’s still the same sun. UV radiation is just as dangerous, and sun protection is still the best defence against skin cancer.

15.01.2022 We’ve seen many positive breakthroughs over the years, with five-year cancer survival in Victoria now at 69%, an increase from 67% from 2009-2013, and from 46% in 1982-1986. Victoria is also on track to become one of the first jurisdictions in the world to eliminate cervical cancer, with the cancer seeing a 48% drop in incidence since 1982. We're making excellent progress, though there's more to be done to reach our elimination goal. Cancer Council remains committed to preve...nting cancer, empowering patients and saving lives, and we also encourage everyone to act, this #WorldCancerDay. Whether it’s going to get your cancer screening done that you’ve been putting off, making a call to the Quitline, or remembering your hat and being SunSmart, there’s so many actions big and small that we can all take to reduce our cancer risk.

13.01.2022 After a mammogram revealed HER2 breast cancer, Carol began weekly chemotherapy, followed by radiotherapy, and is now being treated with hormone suppressants and antineoplastic infusions. I went through the treatment reasonably well and am reasonably optimistic, but there are times when I realise it’s changed me enormously. I was always go, go go, active, and I really had to realise I couldn’t keep it up at that pace." I guess, in a way, I’m luckier than most. I’ve had reso...urces, both financially and emotionally, but I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. There were times where I thought, this is lousy. Her advice to others diagnosed with cancer would be to keep up the exercise, contact Cancer Council for support and find other people who’ve been through the experience and talk to them about it. 12.01.2022 The diagnosis left me stunned. I could not see this coming as I am healthy, active, a non-smoker, and had absolutely no symptoms. I had just turned 50, I felt like I was too young to worry about bowel cancer. Erik Carapetian received the bowel screening test in the mail shortly after his 50th birthday. This simple test may have saved his life and now he encourages other 50-year-olds to do it without delay. https://bit.ly/3m3FoWa
