Wallpiece Each panel 28 x 1200cm Polyester, various threads Free machine drawing, hand stitching To cross a threshold is an action of passing through or across a space. My work is organised into pairs of images which are responses to the many places I have visited. These buildings excite me when I take in the sight, the smells and majesty of the exterior followed by the anticipation of passing into the architectural womb. It is when I cross the threshold and enter the interior of a particular architectural space my senses become so overwhelmed by the power of ‘that’ place I experience a loss of breath. The power of a place to literally take your breath away, to be faced with what the Romantics called ‘the sublime’ is to be made part of something greater. The pairings of interior and exterior spaces act as metaphor for an exploration of the otherness the spiritual within the interior of self.
