23.01.2022 Health update: West Moreton wastewater Routine wastewater testing has returned a positive result for viral fragments of COVID-19 in sewage at the treatmen...t plant at Carole Park in Ipswich. The sample was taken last week as part of a joint Queensland Health, University of Queensland and CSIRO pilot research program to test sewage for traces of COVID-19. Sampling has been taking place at 18 locations across Queensland since mid-July. This is an important reminder that Queenslanders should not be complacent and need to keep in place good hygiene practices, maintain social distancing and get tested when sick. If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, please get tested. This does not impact drinking water in anyway. Local drinking water is thoroughly treated through processes that are designed to remove or kill microorganisms before they reach your taps there is no risk when drinking water, showering, watering the garden, swimming or other activities The Fever Clinic at Ipswich Hospital stands ready to expand testing hours to cope with any additional demand from the community, and the region also hosts several pathology, community and Respiratory Clinics. The areas services by the Carole Park treatment park include Camira, Carole Park, Ellen Grove and Springfield.

09.01.2022 There has been a case of meningococcal sepsis in a child in Mackay. As a precaution people who had close, prolonged contact with the child have been treated wit...h antibiotics in case they are carrying the same germ and could pass it on to other people. The risk to other members of the community is very low. A person sick with a meningococcal infection does not easily spread the germ to others. The bacteria is found in the nose and throat of up to 10% of people and sometimes these healthy carriers may pass it on to others by coughing or sneezing. It is not known why these common germs sometimes cause a serious disease. Although the chance of further cases is very low, you should be aware of the symptoms of meningococcal disease. These may include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, drowsiness and a red or purple rash that may look like tiny bruises in the skin. If a person becomes sick with these symptoms you should take them to a doctor immediately (day or night). Some types of meningococcal infection are prevented by immunisation we currently routinely give Meningococcal ACWY vaccination to one year olds, and a vaccination for Meningococcal type B is also available. A fact sheet about meningococcal disease is also available at http://conditions.health.qld.gov.au//95/Meningococcal-Dise

06.01.2022 A number of whooping cough (pertussis) cases have recently been diagnosed in Mackay in the past week. Whooping cough is highly contagious respiratory infection ...that affects all ages and can be life threatening for babies and young children. It often starts like a cold with a runny nose, sneezing and tiredness over several days followed by the characteristic coughing bouts. Whooping cough and COVID-19 symptoms overlap, testing for both illnesses may be suggested when presenting to your GP. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent whooping cough Immunisation for children is recommended as part of the National Program Schedule A booster dose is also recommended for any adult who wants to reduce the risk of infection and hasn't had a booster in the last 10 years. Adults working with infants and young children under 4 years of age and all health care workers should receive a dose of pertussis vaccine. Anyone who has been in close contact with an infectious person should keep a close eye on their own health. If you develop signs of whooping cough in the three weeks following the exposure immediately remove yourself from close contact with others until you have seen your GP. Call ahead. Stay home until you are no longer infectious, as advised by your GP, or another cause has been confirmed for your illness.
