This was a custom made crocheted Lucy dog which Jasmin and her AAE dog, Lucy were given as a gift from a special young man as a thank you for Lucy hanging out with him on his birthday, a few weeks ago. Yep he wanted to see our two CC legends for his birthday treat! This amazing gift came complete with engraved name tag, a thank you card and chocolates! So thoughtful. Xo

23.01.2022 Now that Melbourne has entered a new phase of Stage Three Restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, my hopes of face to face teaching and support of your young people this term has vanished. It is with a very heavy heart that I have decided to pause all services Canine Comprehension offers for the rest of term 3, 2020. Individual tuition & Programs are cancelled for term 3, 2020. Teachers, parents & caseworkers have referred students who: Worry or show signs of anxiety (especially if this impacts on their engagement will school/curriculum/peers and/or if it impacts on their attendance). Have difficulty regulating their emotions Have difficulty with social interaction... If they have expressed that they feel sad, worried, disconnected, lonely or worthless, there are additional supports available to them and to you. Canine Comprehension does not position themselves in place of a counsellor or psychologist, however we often work alongside them. 16.01.2022 Reading Tails We love books and we want young people to feel the same. Focused on building confidence and reducing anxiety for reluctant readers. Reading Tails uses the fun of Dog Assisted Education to support reluctant readers by creating a comfortable space, short bursts of reading, providing incentives, allowing students to select their books, discussing the books being read and making reading a social experience. Reading Tails is an ongoing club format, run in a library setting, usually on Saturdays or Sundays. We want to encourage young people to utalise that 'third place' for their own wellbeing. The fact is, the decision to pause our services has been made for us and the final straw was the move back to remote learning, the cancellation of many of o...ur programs and the ongoing safety concern of our Canine Comprehension tutors and clients including students, parents, care workers, teachers and guardians. My heart goes out to all of our staff and clients who have worked with us to keep our head above water, but the water seems to continue to rise, pausing of our services for the rest of term 3, is a very painful but necessary decision. In term 4, I will reevaluate and focus on a strong recovery - I hope you will be in a position to rebook with us when the call goes out. It is the grief that can take over our wellbeing and we begin to experience negative feelings and emotions. The inclusion of our trained tutors and support dogs helps the participant to relax and open up about the feelings they are experiencing. 10.01.2022 What is the difference between therapy animals and assistance animals? Explanation provided by Lead the Way Institute, used with permission, 2019. Therapy animals need to be distinguished from assistance animals. Assistance animals are registered to provide a particular service to an individual with an illness or disability. The most well known example would be seeing-eye or guide dogs for the blind. There is however, an increasing role for assistance animals, especially dog...s. Dogs are now trained to perform a range of physical tasks for people, such as picking up objects, opening doors and alerting to sounds. Dogs have even been trained to detect early signs of seizures or blood sugar changes and are able to alert their owners. Some of these dogs may actually be called therapy dogs (for example under the Pets As Therapy or PAT programme). Assistance dogs can be registered in most Australian states under Guide-Dog or Anti-Discrimination legislation. Because of their important functional and often life-saving roles, assistance animals may be granted public access, legally allowing them access into public buildings, transport and even restaurants and hospitals, indeed anywhere their humans go. This legal right does not extend to pets or other animals used in AAI programmes. Whilst therapy dogs/pets are able to receive training, registration or certification for insurance or legal purposes, they do not perform life-saving functions and are hence not allowed public access. Such registration is used to ensure a basic standard of training and reliability for animals and their handlers. For example, a dog certified as a Victorian Canine Association Therapy Dog is assessed as suitable to work with children and elderly individuals, he is not registered as a therapeutic assistance dog that performs a life-saving or health-saving function for his owner. For this reason, he does not have the right to public access.

I’ve been asked to choose 5 questions to answer, so here goes..... 1 What’s something you’re proud of? I would have to say being the Mum of 2 great teenagers ( a son & daughter) who actually like hanging out with me! 2 Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies? ... Well, I’m actually a bit of an adventure junkie and have been sky diving, abseiling down waterfalls, bungee jumping, white water rafting and cave kayaking in Thailand! 3What motivates you at work? Seeing the joy and support that the dogs bring to the amazing young people that we are so privileged to work with. 4 What’s one thing you’re really bad at? Skateboarding!! I just can’t stay co-ordinated and know I will break something if I try!! 5 Have you ever met anyone famous? Yes, I met Novak Djokovic the tennis player at Brisbane airport as he was checking in at the same time as us and we had a joke with him about how long he was taking to check in given we were the only ones there! Susie believes that building positive relationships with students and providing them with a safe and happy learning environment is crucial for their personal growth. With Barney, her Golden Labrador, beside her she is able to provide a creative learning space where students can achieve success. 06.01.2022 What if a child is afraid of dogs? At Canine Comprehension we pride ourselves on our approachability and dedication to inclusive classrooms. If a child is afraid of dogs we will calmly work on that fear at a pace the child feels comfortable with. Please let us know if a student involved with us may be afraid of dogs and the depth of that fear. We could arrange a meet and greet where the dog is instructed to drop and stay still, giving the child an opportunity to approach t...he dog in a less threatening environment. If the fear is greater we can discuss making sure there is a reasonable distance between the dog and student. Communication is the key here, let us know and we will do our best to improve the solution. In almost all cases the student who has had previous fear with dogs has accepted our AAI dog due to their calm nature and high quality training.
