25.01.2022 A client of mine was told by a council worker that dogs have no concept of yesterday, today, or tomorrow, therefore there life doesnt mean much, and its ok to have them put down. Thats certainly not my view, but what do you think?
25.01.2022 As some of you may know, I train dogs for a charity called Canine Companions South Australia, this charity now has a face book page under that name, I would like to encourage you all to have a look at the page, & give them a like. Have a great weekend.
25.01.2022 I have come up with what I believe is a very good idea for a bark deterrent for dogs, but I need someone that is into making electronic gadgets. ( the person must be honest). If anyone fits the bill, please message me, it could be beneficial to both of us, plus many dog owners.
24.01.2022 Thinking back to when I was a young boy, back in the 50s, 1950s that is, not 1850s, I dont recall all the behaviour problems we now see in our dogs, now Im not saying there werent any, but there just didnt seem to be as many. We had a dog, I dont recall her having had any formal training, I dont remember her having behaviour issues, we let her out the front door to have a walk, on her own, she didnt stray, came home when she was called. To me, she appears to have b...een a very well behaved dog. {I just want to make it clear at this stage, Im certainly not suggesting anyone lets their dog out on its own to walk the streets, certainly not.} From my memory, dogs seemed to be better behaved in general, I dont even remember seeing a dog fight. I believe dogs were treated differently back then, they were treated and cared for kindly, but, they were "treated as dogs", not like spoilt children. So, my question to you all is: are we treating our dogs to much like humans, or have training methods anything to do with the problems we now see in our dogs. Have a great day. See more
23.01.2022 A word of warning, particularly to those, like me, that arnt to computer savvy. Yesterday I went to go on line & there was a large notice on my screen stating that my computer had been compromised & that I should phone the number below for help, this notice took up most of the screen. Not thinking, I did this & got an Indian sounding fellow that was very helpful, he guided me through the steps that were needed to clear the problem. At this stage I hadnt thought of a scam, n...ow came the part where he wanted me to pay for a package that would keep my computer free of these problems, the sum was $848. he did get the short answer, & I have had no problems with the computer since, he did however say that this problem may appear again. You can bet I wont be fooling for that again. Please share this post far & wide, it may save someone being taken to the cleaners. Have a great day. See more
23.01.2022 At the moment Im watching a terific dog training dvd, nothing unusual in that, but Coby is sitting watching it with me. I wonder if she will learn anything from it
22.01.2022 Each year in the lead up to Christmas, I put up a post regarding making presents of pups, if anyone is considering doing this, please consider the following. 1.../ Pups are very cute, but they can be hard work, they may be destructive, & bark, they need toilet training & will probably keep you awake at night. 2/ A lot of adult dogs I get called in to train, have been to puppy school, but received no further training, these dogs have become very hard to handle, the owner either calls in a trainer such as myself, or they decide to re-home, or put the dog into a rescue, & not always a non kill shelter, a good deal of dogs that go into kill shelters end up being put down, through no fault of its own. 3/ All Im asking is this: if you are intent on getting someone a dog as a present, think about the years ahead, are you prepared to give the dog a home for the rest of its life, carry out the training it requires, take proper care of the dog. 4/ If you are going ahead & getting a dog, why not consider a rescue dog, some do come with problems, but most can be worked out, and they deserve a caring, loving home. 20.01.2022 I have been back to the UK 3 times in the past 6 years, and I have noticed the same thing with the dogs each time: Dogs are allowed to go just about everywhere, you see them in pubs, cafes, on public transport, boat trips, trains, the list goes on, and no, youre not walking in mess everywhere you go. The dogs in general were very well socialized, I only saw 3 incidents of dog on dog aggression, this was corrected straight away, so no more problem. The other thing I noti...ced was that the vast majority of dogs that pulled on lead, were on a harness, or collar, those that were on a "Check" chain, halter, or figure of eight lead, were by their owners side, not pulling in front. We all have our own views on the above, these are just observations I made while in the UK. Have a great day. See more
20.01.2022 Im reading a book at the moment called " Come Back Como" by Steven Winn. The book is about a rescue dog that really tries the adopting family, he was originall...y picked up off the streets of San Francisco. Obviously his history was unknown. This is not a training book, but it does point out certain things to keep in mind when you adopt a rescue dog, many of which have been neglected, beaten & abused. It can take weeks or months for a rescue dog to settle in with his new family, but they are worth keeping, & not passing on. Como is an escape artist, as soon as a door is open to the outside world, he is out & running, & it doesnt always have a very good ending. It is important to train all dogs to "stay". & not bolt through open doors or gates, this training can take time, but is well worth the effort, & is a simple exercise. In my next post, Ill explain the training method I use. Have a great day. See more

14.01.2022 Happy new year to all my friends, & those that arnt, dont forget the fireworks tomorrow, ensure your dogs are secure & safe, there have been so many lost dogs of late, it seems unbelievable. No need to mention the heat, keep your pets cool, & please dont leave any locked in a car, it goes without saying that this applies to children also. Best wishes for the new year, I wish you all those things that you wish for yourselves. Keep safe, & dont forget: " KEEP DEATH OFF THE ROADS". Bob, the dog man.
13.01.2022 I just want to wish all my friends a happy, safe new year. There will be a load of parties & fireworks tonight, so just to remind you to ensure your animals are secure, new years eve is notorious for dogs getting out of their yards & going missing, the lucky ones get reunited with their owners, some will end up in shelters, others may be hit by vehicles. So please, dont let it be one of yours. If you are going out to a party, dont forget to get a taxi or someone that hasnt been drinking to drive yo home, your dog would love to see you home in one piece. Have a great weekend, & see you in 2017.
10.01.2022 New years eve again, and we will be faced with the same problem as all other years, firework displays, and scared dogs escaping from their gardens. A lot of yo...u will be going to parties this evening, please leave your dogs inside if you are able, if not, then make sure they are in a secure area that they cannot escape from. Dont spoil your new year by coming home to a lost dog. Happy new year, have a great evening, and stay safe, and if you are driving, dont forget to have a designated driver. See more
07.01.2022 High wind, heavy rain & storms forecast for South Australia & Victoria today, make sure your dogs, & other animals are safe & secure. Stay safe, & be careful if you are on the roads.
07.01.2022 I recently picked up a leaflet from our vets regarding feeding your dog raw chicken, & chicken necks. Now I know some of you will say that this is rubbish, & ...that you have fed these to your dog for years, with no ill effect, & I have said the same, however, I am just passing this on for your interest. This study was carried out by the University of Melbourne, & published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. It has been found that feeding small dogs raw chicken & chicken necks has been linked to a higher risk of developing Acute Polyradiculonerutis (APN), a condition that causes paralysis. While dogs can recover form APN, its a long, slow and often distressing process. The condition takes hold by weakening the dogs hind legs, and neck. if the paralysis spreads to the chest area, theres a higher risk of the dog not recovering. If the dog does improve, the process can take up to six months, if not longer. AS I SAID AT THE BEGINNING, I KNOW SOME OF YOU WILL SAY THAT THIS IS RUBBISH, IM JUST PASSING IT ON, AS I FEEL ITS BETTER TO SAFE, THAN SORRY. Have a great day. See more

07.01.2022 2016 has been a great, busy year for Canine Detection Service, next year should be even better, as well as our usual services, we intend to add a few more services, they are, 1/ train assistance dogs for disabled people 2/ train therapy dogs for disabled people 3/ run 1 day training workshops for dog owners. It should be a great year. Happy new year to you all, & have a great weekend.
06.01.2022 I havent put any posts on the page for quite a while, so heres a little tip to help the dogs from getting bored. I cook up mince, pasta & veggies, let it cool, mix some dog biscuits with the mix, fill a kong with it, to make it harder for the dog to get the food out, you can freeze it, that way, it will keep the dog happy for quite a while. Of course, you can use more than one kong, its a good way to feed your dog, & keep him/her occupied for some time. Dont forget to clean the kongs after use. The above may help both boredom & anxiety. Have a great evening.
04.01.2022 Happy mothers day to all the mothers, grandmothers & mothers to be. Have a great day.
04.01.2022 A lot of dog owners have problems with their dog barking while they are out at work, shopping etc, if anyone on my page is, or knows anyone that is into electronic gadgets, please contact me on 0405 179 303. I do believe I have the answer.
03.01.2022 I would like to share the dangers of buried bones, & your dog. Some years ago we had a 10 year old Rotty called Sam, now Sam would never eat a fresh bone, he al...ways buried it. One day he became very ill and was taken to the vet, unfortunately he couldnt be saved. I told our department vet what had happened, and the symptoms, the vet asked, does he bury his bones?, I said yes, the vets answer was, the bone "can" pick up a bacteria from the earth, once the dog has eaten the bone/bacteria, there was nothing I could do to save him. Now I know a lot of dog owners will be saying, rubbish, my dog has always done that, well so to did Sam, for the 8 years we had him. I only mention this to make you aware of what "CAN" happen, but hopefully never will. I know it will "NEVER" happen to another dog of mine, they dont get the chance to bury their bones. See more
03.01.2022 My wife read an article regarding giving blocks of ice to dogs to keep them cool in the hot weather, it stated that it is bad for dogs as it does not cool the...m, but increases their temperature. I must admit that I have been doing this for some time, has anyone had problems with their dogs becoming over heated due to giving them ice blocks? See more
02.01.2022 Ive just watched a segment on " today tonight " regarding chicken/turkey treats from China causing kidney failure & in some cases causing death of dogs. Maybe we should look at making our own treats.
01.01.2022 While we celebrate this Easter weekend, unfortunately many dogs will be surrendered to shelters & rescue groups, the reason being: A lot of pups are given as... Christmas presents, those pups are now around 6 months old, they may be destructive, bark a lot, or just harder to handle. The easy option is to dump these now, unwanted dogs, if they go to a kill shelter, many of them will be put down. When asked if the dogs received obedience training, many owners will say, he/she went to puppy school, but no training or boundarys set since. Had these dogs received proper training, in the house, in the garden, and outside of the dogs environment, also socializing, the vast majority would not need to be surrendered. Another reason for surrendering is one I find hard to accept, the owners are going on holiday, and cant take the dog. And yes, that does happen. Have a great Easter weekend, and please remember, when you get a dog, or any other animal, you have a commitment to that dog, or other animal. See more
