25.01.2022 #helpingz Most would dismiss these little games as nothing. Some might even feel the desire to give her a bit of ‘what for’ for getting in the way. If that were the case, what would be being overlooked is the confidence and trust that has been built enough for Ellie to even consider such things. The fact she’s comfortable enough to clown it up for Ant is massive. ... Of course I missed many of the best bits. On top of this, Poor Elle-Belle has had a pretty rough week. She’s been firing through the eye of a needle since her op. I can only assume she had a reaction to the anaesthetic for her desexing. 18.01.2022 Saabat had a pretty awesome day yesterday. Hanging out, resisting birds, seeing dogs in a calmer fashion, making better choices, keeping his squirrels corralled (mostly), looking handsome, posing for photos, coffee hangs. It's been a long haul helping this guy learn how to keep himself together. We've got some personalities here, but Batman's sense of humour is even more twisted. Everything is a joke! Asking him to keep his squirrels in check is hard work, man! ... When Bat first arrived, we got around 3 minutes of work with him before he checked out. Concentrating was tough! Even high energy, engaging work was hard to centre in on. So many squirrels charging in every direction at warp speed. His sense of humour and adrenalised state, meant that any input was often laughed at. Comparatively, yesterday afternoon was a pleasure. His squirrels jumped on their spinning wheel a couple of times, but thankfully, with assistance and insight, he was able to gather them up and get them in order again. Finally we are present in Bat's world instead of simply being a play thing. Finally we are able to converse with Bat in a give and take fashion. Finally, he is able to investigate the yard like a relatively 'normal' dog, vs instantly warp speeding around, stealing everything in sight just to get a reaction from someone. Finally he can settle and enjoy the sunbake. Finally, we have gone a while without his tummy giving out. Poo explosions are not fun! Finally we can breathe together. 15.01.2022 My heart! Bullett is one of our puppy school attendees. He is a fair amount of dog already. Talk about busy! His people are absolutely not his first thought when out and about. At Week 1, he was vocalising and pulling at the lead, wanting to MMA with his class mates, barely taking food and making things very hard for everyone.... Fast forward a week and although not perfect, Bullett had a much better class today. He and his owners left early both classes, before Bullet reached his threshold and spiralled down all sorts of Rabbit holes. As Bullet and his people were leaving today, the rest of the class gave them a round of applause, in support of the improvement they had made. Genuine appreciation and celebration for people putting in the hard yards. My heart swelled, my eyes filled with tears. 12.01.2022 It's really easy to underestimate just how valuable mental work is for our dogs. 15 minutes of mental stimulation/training = 1 hr walk!! But then, lets think about when we are asking our dogs to be brave. To push aside their concerns and conquer that mountain (or molehill) in front of them. ... Take yourself back to the last time you really had to practice self control, willpower, restraint. Perhaps it's being around a work colleague who is hard to be around. Perhaps it's internal dialogues we are trying to change. Perhaps it's learning new things. Remember how fried you felt?? The dogs remind me of these things daily. Ted in town the other morning. Poor guy was done for the rest of the day. Even though he did really well and didn’t seem phased. But we were there for a while, so, that makes sense. But Ellie really threw it up in neon lights for me this morning. We continue the ute rides to help her change her association towards car trips generally. She appears to enjoy them. Jumping in willingly. Has a big happy head on her the whole time. Still smiling by the time we get back to the house. You'd think nothing of it, right? Ellie is an extremely dog social lady. Normally, when she has free time with the other dogs, she is either playing or asking them to play. This morning was no different. Right up until our ute ride. These pics are during and post this mornings jaunt. Right now there’s not one scrap of interest in play. Very happy to just be. Digesting. Recharging her batteries. Self improvement is hard!! 12.01.2022 Well that pedicure was obviously stressful Long nails can really impact on our dog’s mobility. They impact on the angulation of the dog’s feet, thus knocking on to impact on the rest of the body. We were very slow and methodical with Lady through this process. Taking our time to allow her to take the exercise in and relax again, before moving on to the next nail. ... They aren’t as short as I would like, but we are focussing on the big picture of the trims being stress free. 02.01.2022 Anyone else see it?!?!??? We have our very own Luck Dragon visiting the Ranch. Oh Lady, Lady Bug, Lady Beetle, Bug... ...where do we start... ... Lady’s people reached out to us desperate for help. You see, she has been putting them through the wringer when she saw other dogs. Not an uncommon problem in our community these days. Board and train isn't usually our go to for these problems, but when we met silence at the other end of the line when we suggested helping them find a local trainer option, and finding out they had already worked with someone locally, and them mentioning how much they had heard about me (mostly good I hope lol), a response of 'perhaps she could visit, but there will still be much to do when she comes home' was snapped up immediately. And thank bloody goodness they pushed! This gorgeous girl has done nothing but thrive since her arrival. Previously assessed as not being able to be closer than 30 meters of a dog, Lady, within 10 days of arrival, is currently laying at my feet, snoring, while Penny and Ding are loose with us!!!! And that's taking it slow due to the information that had been provided. Absolutely, Lady could get herself into trouble. Absolutely, we will need to be careful when it comes to busier dogs, new environments, pressurised environments and combinations thereof etc etc. Absolutely, there’s still plenty of learning to happen. As a trainer, it is my job to empower THE TEAM. To teach. To build understanding and empathy. To provide constructive guidance and support so we can formulate a safe way forward together. The below dog training mantra’s are as important for the human as they are for the dog: set yourself up for success be proactive instead of reactive hope for the best, plan for the worst (they should be life mantra’s too) I'm pretty darn excited about what Lady’s future holds. 02.01.2022 The Lady Bug joined me on my trip to Taree Pet Barn today. I think she hated it. It wasn’t all adoring fans tho. The Bug does find it hard to remember she’s not just there for the party. ... We slowed down and helped her centre herself, until she was mentally present. Then and only then did we enter the building. Had she not been able to gather herself together enough to go inside, we would have just worked outside. Helping Lady practice these skills means that she is getting reps in on the skills she needs when her kryptonite is in the picture. Building new neurological pathways. Starting new patterns and habits. Developing new, more appropriate, options. 01.01.2022 Learning to watch the world go by. Ted, Ellie and Lady all find town life a bit pressurised. While feeling completely at home, at home, they find the same things much harder in town. ... So, we got ourselves a coffee and croissant and found ourselves a pozzie where we were able to slow down and remember our natural self. (Thanks to Wingham Hay Shed) Slowing down allows me to listen to what the dog is telling me. How they are feeling about the situation. Am I in the picture? Are they looking for a reward? Will they even take food? Can they hear me, or is there too much stress fog for me to penetrate? As long as I’ve got the environment right, they will be able to recover and find their way through the end of that tunnel. With me waving their pom poms every step of the way. Finding that relief. Remembering that I’m there. Remembering to look to me for guidance. Remembering to ‘be’.
