24.01.2022 So, the kids want a puppy. We have all read the heart-warming stories of children with ASD connecting to his/her dog in a way they had never done before. We all know the bond between man and dog and our heart swells when we hear of those who experience difficulties connecting, making that important relationship with their dog. Now this blog is not to warn parents off the idea altogether. If your child is on the spectrum they may well indeed benefit from having a dogg...Continue reading

22.01.2022 What if a child is afraid of dogs? At Canine Comprehension we pride ourselves on our approachability and dedication to inclusive classrooms. If a child is afraid of dogs we will calmly work on that fear at a pace the child feels comfortable with. Please let us know if a student involved with us may be afraid of dogs and the depth of that fear. We could arrange a meet and greet where the dog is instructed to drop and stay still, giving the child an opportunity to approach t...he dog in a less threatening environment. If the fear is greater we can discuss making sure there is a reasonable distance between the dog and student. Communication is the key here, let us know and we will do our best to improve the solution. In almost all cases the student who has had previous fear with dogs has accepted our AAI dog due to their calm nature and high quality training.

22.01.2022 What is the difference between therapy animals and assistance animals? Explanation provided by Lead the Way Institute, used with permission, 2019. Therapy animals need to be distinguished from assistance animals. Assistance animals are registered to provide a particular service to an individual with an illness or disability. The most well known example would be seeing-eye or guide dogs for the blind. There is however, an increasing role for assistance animals, especially dog...s. Dogs are now trained to perform a range of physical tasks for people, such as picking up objects, opening doors and alerting to sounds. Dogs have even been trained to detect early signs of seizures or blood sugar changes and are able to alert their owners. Some of these dogs may actually be called therapy dogs (for example under the Pets As Therapy or PAT programme). Assistance dogs can be registered in most Australian states under Guide-Dog or Anti-Discrimination legislation. Because of their important functional and often life-saving roles, assistance animals may be granted public access, legally allowing them access into public buildings, transport and even restaurants and hospitals, indeed anywhere their humans go. This legal right does not extend to pets or other animals used in AAI programmes. Whilst therapy dogs/pets are able to receive training, registration or certification for insurance or legal purposes, they do not perform life-saving functions and are hence not allowed public access. Such registration is used to ensure a basic standard of training and reliability for animals and their handlers. For example, a dog certified as a Victorian Canine Association Therapy Dog is assessed as suitable to work with children and elderly individuals, he is not registered as a therapeutic assistance dog that performs a life-saving or health-saving function for his owner. For this reason, he does not have the right to public access.

21.01.2022 Hi everyone, I'm Louise, and I am really looking forward to getting back to work with Canine Comprehension, I've been asked to choose 5 questions to answer, so here goes... 1What motivates you at work? My boss, Sarah’s passion for helping young people is infectious. I love how she is always looking for ways to help the young and isn’t afraid to think outside the box. 2What has been the best part of living through this pandemic? I am soooo addicted to online shopping now... and click and collect. I don’t think I can give this up, EVER!! 3What’s the most exciting part of your job? Getting to work with Oscar, River and Minnie every day. I have missed them through this pandemic and can’t wait to see them again. Second to this I love seeing all the pics of the young people with our wonderful tutors and their dogs. I also love chatting to schools and guardians of the young people we work with. 4Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies? I’m a bit of a spreadsheet nerd and love to formulate spreadsheets. I also have a keen eye for knowing when something is not exactly lined up, it drives Sarah crazy when I point out something is not exactly inline 5What was your favourite subject in school? PE, I’m a sport person and loved all the mechanics of how our bodies work when playing sport. I loved learning about all the muscles groups we have. See more

19.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I'm Melissa, I'm part of the Canine Comprehension admin team and I'm really looking forward to getting back to work. 1I have to admit I am an ac...counting nerd. I like things neat and tidy with an explanation and paper trail. When I was at school my report cards always said Melissa is a quiet student who needs to talk up more in class, except for my accounting subject teacher who said I was disruptive and over confident, I had completed the years work by May of that year and she had run out of extra work for me to do. 2Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies? I am also an outdoor adventure guide mainly working at school camp activities. I do caving abseiling and rock climbing. 3Have you ever met anyone famous? Yes I got to meet the Queen Mother in 1996 when she attended a function where I was working in London. She was lovely and it was a highlight of my trip to the UK. 4What has been the worst part of living through this pandemic? Not being able to out, I miss my weekly shopping night I have with a friend - we usually met up and browsed the shops looking for clothes for ourselves and our kids. 5What has been the best part of living through this pandemic? Being able to see how adaptable my kids are and how they have taken on their home learning. I love the walks and bike rides we have been able to do together. See more

19.01.2022 Our expected outcomes: Student becomes calmer Understand their feelings Grow in confidence Understand empathy towards others... Achieve educational goals See more

18.01.2022 Canine Comprehension was founded by Sarah Macdonald in 2015. Sarah brings a wealth of experience to her current work from her previous years in Japanese Language schools, Avila College, Mount Waverley as Head of Department for General Studies, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners as an education officer and a dog trainer, specialising in behavioural problems. During her time as a dog trainer Sarah missed the classroom and the interactions she used to have wit...h her students. Sarah has always had an interest in the psychology of learning and motivation and recognised a strong link with learning theory of animal and that of young people. Mainly, that all creatures need to have their physiological needs, safety needs and needs of belongingness met (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.) Sarah saw that in the same way dogs need to feel safe and supported to learn commands, our young people need support and understanding to feel motivated to learn. She realised that no other company offered an opportunity for educators and allied health professionals with dog assisted therapy skills to connect and support young people with their learning goals. So, Canine Comprehension was created to provide both individual and group tutoring across Victoria. See more

I’ve been asked to choose 5 questions to answer, so here goes..... 1 What’s something you’re proud of? I would have to say being the Mum of 2 great teenagers ( a son & daughter) who actually like hanging out with me! 2 Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies? ... Well, I’m actually a bit of an adventure junkie and have been sky diving, abseiling down waterfalls, bungee jumping, white water rafting and cave kayaking in Thailand! 3What motivates you at work? Seeing the joy and support that the dogs bring to the amazing young people that we are so privileged to work with. 4 What’s one thing you’re really bad at? Skateboarding!! I just can’t stay co-ordinated and know I will break something if I try!! 5 Have you ever met anyone famous? Yes, I met Novak Djokovic the tennis player at Brisbane airport as he was checking in at the same time as us and we had a joke with him about how long he was taking to check in given we were the only ones there! He was actually lovely and quite funny! I love tennis so this was a highlight for me! See more

15.01.2022 This case study from a teacher warms our heart & we wanted to share. "Student presents with an intellectual disability. Mental Health issues common in family. She presents with problematic behaviour. Harm to others, property destruction. Student is very anxious. She has difficulty engaging in classes for any length of time. However, was very excited to participate, was shy communicating with the tutor initially but quickly built a good rapport with everyone from Canine Comprehension who worked with her. Since the program, the student will participate for durations longer than she will for other activities. We are glad she is able to engage with this service."

09.01.2022 Quotes from parents who have witnessed the change in their child from a completed therapy dog program: Canine Comprehension was recommended by another tutor. Initially my daughter did not want to have anything to do with a tutor, she now looks forward to attending her sessions with Sarah and her dogs, she is disappointed if she has to miss a session! Working with Canine Comprehension has been an amazing benefit to my daughter not only on an academic level but an emotiona...l level as well. My daughter has been able to talk to Sarah, and Sarah is able to understand where my daughter is struggling with different issues. Sarah has also worked with my daughters school. Of course, the dogs always provide the additional comfort and my daughter looks forward to seeing them too. Good tutoring, emotional as well as academic support, ability to liaise with the school, ability to break down issued to make them more manageable and a lovely rapport with my daughter are all reasons why I would recommend Canine Comprehension to others.

07.01.2022 Grief and loss During our life, we all, unfortunately, experience loss and sadness. It is the grief that can take over our wellbeing and we begin to experience negative feelings and emotions. The inclusion of our trained tutors and support dogs helps the participant to relax and open up about the feelings they are experiencing. Our Animal Assisted Intervention dogs offer a non-judgemental space that can relax and encourage a participant to process their feelings and begin to understand how to function and grow alongside these feelings. 06.01.2022 How can I refer a young person? Teachers, parents & caseworkers have referred students who: Worry or show signs of anxiety (especially if this impacts on their engagement will school/curriculum/peers and/or if it impacts on their attendance). Have difficulty regulating their emotions Have difficulty with social interaction... If they have expressed that they feel sad, worried, disconnected, lonely or worthless, there are additional supports available to them and to you. 04.01.2022 Dear wonderful clients, Now that Melbourne has entered a new phase of Stage Three Restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, my hopes of face to face teaching and support of your young people has vanished. It is with a very heavy heart that I have decided to pause all services Canine Comprehension offers for term 3. The fact is, the decision to pause our services has been made for us and the final straw was the move back to remote learning, the cancellation of many of o...ur programs and the ongoing safety concern of our Canine Comprehension tutors and clients including students, parents, care workers, teachers and guardians. My heart goes out to all of our staff and clients who have worked with us to keep our head above water, but the water seems to continue to rise, pausing of our services for the rest of term 3, is a very painful but necessary decision. In term 4, I will reevaluate and focus on a strong recovery - I hope you will be in a position to rebook with us when the call goes out. Thank you for your support and understanding at this difficult time.

03.01.2022 Reading Tails We love books and we want young people to feel the same. Focused on building confidence and reducing anxiety for reluctant readers. Reading Tails uses the fun of Dog Assisted Education to support reluctant readers by creating a comfortable space, short bursts of reading, providing incentives, allowing students to select their books, discussing the books being read and making reading a social experience. Reading Tails is an ongoing club format, run in a library setting, usually on Saturdays or Sundays. We create a program to work with the librarys specific needs therefore prices vary - contact us for a quote.

03.01.2022 Lockdown is rough! Know that when we are allowed to see our Term 3 schools, we will be there. xoxo

02.01.2022 What is Dog Assisted Learning? Some children have a hard time at school and can struggle with their learning and friendships as a result. Canine Comprehension support students in understanding their learning process better. A well-trained dog and a tutor will work with an individual or a group throughout a term. Through weekly attendance young people may now have more positive feelings about themselves and school. The presence of a dog can make awkward or tough conversations... a little easier because the focus is not on the students. As a result, your child may feel less anxious, more in control of their emotions, or have made some new friends. Our focus is to: Help them discuss their worries around learning Learn more about possible triggers Learn strategies and develop confidence in managing them Practice mindfulness techniques Assist young people develop interpersonal and social skills, manage their own emotions and develop empathy for others, enabling better connections in their learning environment. 01.01.2022 Meet Sharon and Ebony. Sharon has had over 30 years of teaching experience in a variety of roles and settings. Such as working in disadvantaged schools’ programs in the Western Suburbs of Sydney and in executive positions organising whole school welfare programs. Since moving to Victoria, she has completed a Masters of Education in Language Intervention and Hearing Impairment and has worked as Teacher of the Deaf. As a team Sharon and Ebony, the Standard Poodle, have been in...volved in Therapy work for over 5 years in nursing homes, Universities and workplaces. Ebony is eager to attend her sessions and is always lovingly received. As a mum of two young adults, Sharon has seen the education system from a parent’s perspective. She has had two different journeys with her own children, which has reinforced for her the need for varied student support systems and highlighted the difficulties in finding suitable services for both the student and the parent. Sharon is passionate about helping provide access to quality education for all. To be able to work towards this goal with Ebony as her partner and the Canine Comprehension team is her ideal job.
