25.01.2022 Teaching tricks is a good way to increase your bond with your dog, as well as improve your dogs confidence, concentration, motivation and even balance.

25.01.2022 Canine Instincts' motto of 2016... Don't set your dog up to fail.

23.01.2022 Pet's Day Out.. See you all there :)

23.01.2022 Wow what a year! Canine Instincts has met roughly 100 dogs and has empowered many owners in 2015. This has been a very rewarding experience and it melts my insides when I hear/see all the efforts and improvements. Wishing everyone and their fur kids a merry Christmas and happy new year. Hope Santa remembers all the dogs out their. Canine Instincts is looking forward to a big 2016!

23.01.2022 Puppy socialisation is so important especially up until 14 weeks, which is referred to as the 'critical period of socalisation'. It gives your puppy the best chance to grow up as a well balanced dog. Here is a great video which explains it all.

23.01.2022 My dogs love giving hugs. Is Nilla in this photo trying to dominate me? Doubt it! Is Nilla hugging me for attention and because she enjoys it? Highly likely.... Will Nilla get off me if I ask her to? Yes, because I reward her for doing so!

20.01.2022 Nilla has invented her own game of 'sideways agility'. You really don't need much space to do some agility at home, especially when you do it sideways..

20.01.2022 What motivates your dog? Food, enjoyment, verbal praise, a particular toy or simply the feeling of having a purpose?

20.01.2022 A 'snuffle mat' is easy to make and is a great tool you can use to stimulate your dog. Place some food in the mat and your dog then needs to use its nose to find all the treats. All you need is some polar fleece and a rubber mat with holes in it. Cut the fleece into strips and tie it through the holes.

19.01.2022 What you feed your dog can impact its behaviour. Have you ever read the list of ingredients in the food you are feeding your dog? The ingredients are in order of abundance with the first on the list being the main ingredient. Canine Instincts has had a number of clients who have found that by simply changing their dog's dry food to one with no corn, that they have a much calmer dog. Why?... Many brands use corn as a main ingredient in their dry food as it is used as a cheap filler. Corn has a high glycemic index and is metabolised in dogs in a similar way to sugar in humans. Look for the word 'corn' or 'maize' in the ingredient list of your dog food!

19.01.2022 Communication: What is your dog trying to tell you? Yawning, licking, turning away are some examples of what are called 'Calming Signals'. They are a way our dogs try to communicate to us or other dogs, in an attempt to promote peace. They can be subtle and easily missed.

17.01.2022 Clear and consistent rules helps make life predictable and less stressful.

17.01.2022 Ever wondered what your dogs do all day when your not home? A few years ago a set up a camera so that I could spy on my dogs throughout the day when I wasn't home. I was interested to see how they behaved when I wasn't around, so I watched them over the space of a couple of months. I was happy to see my dogs coped well with being left alone for long periods of time. What surprised me was they very rarely played with each other and spent the entire time sleeping! They would oc...casionally only get up to change their sleeping spot. Did you know dogs like to sleep 14-18 hours a day?

17.01.2022 Would you know what to do if your dog started choking or stopped breathing? I recently completed a pet first aid course and I feel good knowing I have the knowledge to help my dogs in a medical emergency. What are you waiting for? Book yourself in!

16.01.2022 How to appropriately use a retractable leash.

15.01.2022 I am a big advocate for mental exercise. I had to find a treat dispensing toy which wasn't too easy for my dog Nilla and I got her the 'Buster Cube'. Over the years Nilla has learned to problem solve and to think 'outside the box'. This video is an example and you will see what Nilla does to get the food to come out of the cube which doesn't roll around easily.

15.01.2022 When your dog is reactive to dogs and/or people EVERY walk is a training session.

15.01.2022 Dogs do speak. We just need to learn how to listen.

14.01.2022 It is coming up to storm and firework season. Did you know you can't reinforce fear? Here is a great article to read. http://www.patriciamcconnell.com//you-cant-reinforce-fear-

14.01.2022 For reinforcement to be effective or for your dog to understand why they are being rewarded, reinforcement has to be delivered immediately or within 2 seconds of your dog performing a behaviour. The same is true for punishment. If you come home to find your dog has done something wrong, they will not understand why they are being punished. Your dog may look guilty but they are just responding to your body language, tone of voice etc and are attempting to avoid the punishment. Delayed punishment only increases stress, anxiety, fear and possibly even the behaviour you are trying to correct!

14.01.2022 Do you talk too much to your dogs? They are very good at reading our body language. Imagine how confusing it must be for them when we are not clear and consistent.

13.01.2022 YES my dogs sleep on my bed... YES my dogs are allowed on the couch... However, my dogs are compliant, eager to please and we have a relationship built on mutual trust and respect.

05.01.2022 Canine Instincts will be at the Canine Christmas Market on Sunday! Come say hello or ask any questions you may have :)

05.01.2022 Exploring walks are a great way to stimulate your dog. When did your dog last 'check in' to nature's Facebook?

04.01.2022 Some great reading.

03.01.2022 Retractable leads can cause injury to you, your dog and human/canine bystanders. Have you thought about the risks?

02.01.2022 Giving your dog something to do such as a stuffed kong, is a good way to help them settle.

01.01.2022 Letting your dog sniff and explore the environment is a great way to mentally stimulate your dog. Next time you walk your dog stop and let them sniff, take them to a new place or a large grassy area full of different smells. Wonder around slowly letting them explore. You may find you will not cover much distance but your dog will be well exercised and possibly calmer on your walk.
