19.01.2022 The Migration of the Blue Tiger Butterflies We took a snap of this Blue Tiger Butterfly perched on a white box flower cluster sucking up some sweet nectar. These guys migrate north in the cooler months and are currently making their way back down south. They seek out the corky milk vine to lay their eggs. The lavae chew the new shoots of the corky milk vine absorbing its poisons that helps protect them from prey, making their flesh bitter with the poison. 08.01.2022 Did you know male honeybees (drones) don’t sting? Their sole purpose is to pass on the colonies genes. Drones start leaving the hive at around 16 days old. A Virgin Queen will meet with thousands of drones high in the sky. On average she will mate with 10-24 drones, once the male has fertilised the queen his sexual and intestinal organs are ripped out remaining with the Queen. Once the Queen is successfully mated she will begin laying, using the stored sperm to fertilise ...eggs. Queen bees have been known to live successfully for up to 7 years, however many commercial beekeepers will find and kill the queen each year replacing her with a younger more vigorous layer. We take the hands off approach and let the bees tell us what they need and we will act in the best interest to help the colony. If the colony looks set for deterioration we will replace the Queen otherwise we leave her bee. As the days are getting cooler the colonies may be removing unnecessary members of the hive and this unfortunately is majority of the drone population. Kicked out of the hive and left to starve. It's all about survival for these amazing creatures at any cost. Winter will bring many challenges for them with limited food supplies, and cool nights. They must be very frugal to make it through to spring. 06.01.2022 Our little man has turned 1 and since he has never tried honey, we thought a Honey Drizzle was in order. We covered him from head to toe and he loved it. Some of you may know that it is recommended that children under one not have Raw Honey, due to the risk of Botulism. His now mature digestive system can pass the toxins produced by a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum that can cause Botulism. The spores can be found in dust and soil and in ‘very rare cases’ can be found in Raw Honey and for this reason it is not advised to give children under one to have Raw Honey.

04.01.2022 Shanon's Sweet Soy Tofu Tofu marinade: 450g firm tofu 4tbs soy sauce 2tbs rice wine vinegar ... Cornflour Oil of choice Glaze: 3tbs CannonBee Honey 1 tbs Raw Honey / 1tbs Chilli Honey / 1tbs Garlic Honey 3tbs soy sauce 3tbs rice wine vinegar 3tbs vegtable stock 1tbs cornflour - Wrap tofu in paper towel, place a bread board on top of the tofu & let sit for 10min to draw out excess moisture - Cut tofu into cubes - Mix marinade ingedients, add tofu, leave for 5-10min, turn, leave for another 5-10mins - Remove tofu from marinade & pat dry with paper towel - Coat with cornflour - mix all sauce glaze ingredients - Deep/shallow fry tofu over high heat, until crisp with golden coating, remove onto paper towel. Add CannonBee Chilli Honey and Fermented Garlic in Raw Honey into a pan on Medium heat with a dash of oil. Reduce to a glaze and mix in tofu.
