25.01.2022 Dental health is super important when it comes to our furry friends and is one of the most common problems we see in our pets. At Cannon Hill Family Vet Surgery we offer all clients free dental estimates all year round! Periodontal disease is extremely common in both dogs and cats from 3 years of age. This is where plaque and tartar accumulate on the teeth both above and below the gumline, which irritate the gums and allows bacteria to grow, causing damage to the s...upportive structures of the teeth. This causes significant pain to our pets and noticeably bad breath. Not only is it extremely painful for our pets, it also causes bone and tooth loss and oral infection. If left untreated it can even cause further problems as the bacteria and infection can enter the bloodstream and cause systemic disease to other vital organs in the body such as the liver and kidneys. Signs of dental disease include: - Bad breath - Red gums - Visible tartar or discolouration of teeth - Pawing at the teeth or mouth - Difficulty eating - Increased salivation - Loss of appetite Whilst some breeds are more prone to others in developing some form of dental disease, there are many ways to reduce the severity by having a good home care plan in place. If you have any questions regarding your pets dental health please feel free to give us a call on 3399 2182 and have a chat to our friendly nurses or book in for your free dental estimate.

23.01.2022 This is gorgeous little Barney and we are so happy to be able to see him a few weeks ago for his desexing procedure. Barney is a very lucky little man - he came in several months ago quite sick with vomiting, lethargy and inappetence. After some xrays, it was suspected Barney had a foreign body obstruction and went into surgery that night to remove a part of a toy he had ingested! After a stay with us for a few days post surgery, he was able to be discharged and had made a full recovery to come back and be able to be desexed recently! We are very happy that Barney has also made a excellent recovery from his desexing procedure and we hope to only see Barney from now on for routine check ups and vaccinations!!!

16.01.2022 PARVOVIRUS ALERT Just a friendly and important reminder to please make sure your pets are up to date with their vaccinations!! There have been a number of outbreaks of parvovirus seen in Queensland recently. Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that can make our pets extremely sick and can be fatal, especially for young puppies who are more susceptible to the disease. The virus is passed through the faeces of infected dogs and can remain in the environment for up to 9 ye...ars. Signs of parvovirus include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and/or blood in the faeces and vomiting, which then causes severe dehydration and shock. Fortunately with vaccination this deadly disease can be prevented!! To help keep our puppies safe we also recommend waiting until two weeks after their final puppy vaccination before taking them out to explore the world. A booster vaccination should then be given yearly after that. Please do not hesitate to contact us at the clinic if you have any questions about your pets vaccinations or would like some more information and remember prevention is key!!

05.01.2022 Hot Weather Warning Summer is almost here and the days are getting warmer. Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition so please ensure we are keeping our pets cool this summer! Our brachycephalic breed dogs, those with short muzzles such as pugs and bulldogs, struggle the most with the heat. Signs of heatstroke... - Excessive panting - Restlessness - Increase in body temperature - Lethargy or collapse - Change in gum colour - they may be bright red or purplish Ways to prevent heatstroke Leave pets indoors with the air-con on or if they are outside ensure they have access to shady areas at all times and plenty of water. Walk your dog in the cooler times of the day, either early morning or in the evening. Always provide fresh water at home and ensure you carry water with you when you take your pets out. And of course never leave your pets unattended in a car. If you think your pet may be experiencing heatstroke please call us on 3399 2182.
