25.01.2022 There's a number of narrow winding creeks on the floodplain near Berri that are navigable only by kayak. Why not hire a kayak and spend an afternoon refreshing yourself with some peace and quiet. canoeadventure.com.au/hire

23.01.2022 Are there crocodiles in the Murray? Am I too big to fit in a kayak? How fit do I need to be to go kayaking? Will I fall in? Are there any canoe trails we can follow? Learn the answers to these questions and more at https://canoeadventure.com.au/FAQS

22.01.2022 Welcome to all our new "likers". We'd love to show ALL of you our magnificent waterways. You can learn more about us at www.canoeadventure.com.au Feel free to message us, or to post any questions below.

20.01.2022 This is so important to the Riverland. Please take note, if you are visiting.

16.01.2022 Some news on the Pike Floodplain Environmental Watering Event from Ellee at DEW. The environmental watering event at the Pike floodplain is progressing really well with water levels expected to hit the target height within the next few weeks. We have further raised the water level in the Lock 5 weir pool by 0.43 m AHD above normal operating level. Lock 5 is expected to reach a target height of 16.8 m AHD to assist with further water flow through the inlets. The water levels ...at Lock 5 are increasing at a slow pace, by approximately 2-3 cm per day. The continued weir pool raising and Pike Floodplain operations are planned to be completed in mid to late December 2020. The water levels at the Pike regulator are currently sitting at 15.16 m AHD and is gradually increasing to reach the target height of 15.25 m AHD. We are seeing water levels throughout the anabranch system rising and spilling into low lying floodplain and wetlands providing benefits for the vegetation including areas of river red gums, black box, lignum and understorey plants. Large numbers of frogs have been recorded responding to the watering including the threatened Southern bell frogs. Large numbers of wading birds have also been spotted across the mosaic of pooled water and inundation of wetlands including Duck Hole which is also providing valuable habitat for a range of waterbirds. Bird surveys are being undertaken this month to record as many species as possible during the watering event. The new environmental infrastructure at the Pike floodplain is being conservatively managed to maintain flows within the anabranch systems. During the operation there may be some increase in salinity and reduction in levels of dissolved oxygen levels but the sites are being cautiously managed. Water quality at the sites and in the river is closely monitored and the operations may be amended if conditions change more than expected. Water quality monitoring at the sites and within the river can be accessed via Water Connect www.waterconnect.sa.gov.au/Sys/SiteInfo/Pages/Default.aspx Summary Access into the Pike floodplain still remains closed to the general public during this time. We ask that care should be taken when boating or canoeing around the Pike anabranch. Conditions within the creeks will vary with water speed, depth and size where the water is on the floodplain. 16.01.2022 It was lovely to finally meet the lovely Amy Outdoors, who joined us on one of our Berri Kayaking Group Excursions. She has been busy during Covid, paddling the SA stretch of the Murray in her spare time, and documenting it by video - Take a look at her page - she has some lovely images, and a tale to tell. The video is hers as well. https://fb.watch/1Q4HYbR4T-/

15.01.2022 Flying free in South Australia again! These black swan are a common sight at Loch Luna, and also seen on the river, and in other wetlands too. We enjoy hearing their honking call, and seeing their ungainly running takeoffs. Thanks to Ken Getgood for letting us share his photo.

12.01.2022 Well, we're excited for a chance to stay home and catch up on all of the things that need to be done. Hope the next 6 days are kind to all of us in SA. Pick up that phone or get on the computer and check in on each other. A huge thank you to all of our essential workers.

10.01.2022 What is it? An Eastern Long-necked Turtle who had made it all the way to the top of the Berri bridge before Kym rescued it from becoming a turtle pancake! It was relocated to a far more suitable spot. Now is turtle breeding season. Wish them well; they have to contend with foxes and other predators stealing their eggs, as well as limited nesting spots due to the overgrowth of reeds.

10.01.2022 We love the calmness that usually settles on the river at sunset. It makes for serene paddling and great reflections. Book your Easter Sunset Kayak Tour now.

09.01.2022 Our guided sunset kayak tours are a popular outing for Berri visitors. Go to our website to book online, or give us a ring 04211 676 45

07.01.2022 Some beautiful Riverland reflections to calm your soul, South Australia!

06.01.2022 Yesterday we had the privelege of attending a Pike Floodplain Community Event. As well as a magnificent sunset, we were treated to some information on birds and frogs (Did you know we only have 9 species of frogs, locally - who's going to take up the challenge of identifying all of thier calls with me?) We were informed about a few helpful citizen science reporting apps, and got to hear from a local landowner about how the environmental watering has made a huge difference near him. This community driven project is delivering Commonwealth water for the environment to a stretch of the floodplain where even the black box were dying. Now we are hearing and seeing the return of threatened species such as the Southern Bell Frog, Latham’s Snipe and Australasian Shoveler.

02.01.2022 Being still in the presence of a sunrise is such an awesome way to start the day. Follow that with a leisurely paddle through the wetlands listening to the birds and frogs. Say "Hi" to the kangaroos. Enjoy a hot cuppa. That's my idea of bliss. What's yours?

01.01.2022 Over the last few years the Katarapko area has been the focus of a lot of environmental works with the building of a blocking bank and regulators, to allow some of the natural flooding/drying cycle to be mimicked, with the aim to improve the wetlands. Currently this new system is undergoing its first trial, with an environmental watering event having reached the halfway mark milestone. This medium level first operation of the new infrastructure commenced in September with th...e event planned to be completed in December 2020. Katarapko has achieved the planned target operation height of 12.8m AHD on 28/10/2020 and was held at this level for around 6 days. Water levels will now slowly and carefully be lowered through the months of November and December to a normal operating height of 10m. The watering has extended out onto areas of the floodplain providing the lower lying vegetation with a much needed drink. The waterbirds and frogs are responding to the conditions which is fantastic to see. Plants like lignum which provide fantastic habitat for a range of species, are greening up and starting to flower, responding well to the watering event. During this time Katarapko is still open to the general public, but with some road and location closures and detours. Conditions within the creeks will vary in water speed, depth and size where the water is on the floodplain. If you’re a careful, experienced kayaker, who doesn’t mind a few portages, it’s a really lovely trip at the moment, but be aware that there are obstacles, and the water is moving quickly. (Thanks for DEW for most of this information) See more
