25.01.2022 Why choose an independent Support Coordinator? It is a Support Coordinator’s job to work alongside (not for) people to make choices about what is best for them and their future. Without bias or without organisational influence. Support Coordinators should not influence participants to purchase specific services, but rather, provide support to explore the most suitable and desired options.... All providers must understand that it’s not appropriate to treat people as captured participants with little genuine choice. Instead, participants should be supported to gain the knowledge, confidence and capacity to demand more. Support Coordinators should be working to uphold the rights and dignity of people with disability and for people to develop capacity to exercise choice and control. This ultimately should look like safeguarding against exploitation whilst enabling participants to take informed risks and exercise choice. The overall idea is we want to move away from closed systems, where there is less visibility and oversight of potential abuse and neglect. We want people to be able to make choices about one service, without breaking down their whole support system. Genuine choice can keep people safer.
