22.01.2022 Daily Reading from With Love to the World Friday 05 February 2021... Read: 1 Corinthians 9:2427 Introduction to Prayer: I trust and hope in the Lord. Have you noticed how often the sporting field is used to provide images for the struggles of faith? Preachers often refer to cricket, football, or sporting idols, and here Paul calls up images of marathon runners winning a crown of leaves, and boxers shadowboxing in training. This speaks to the popularity of the arena in the lives of people in both ancient times and now. The thing about sport is that it is a bodily activity, and Paul leaves his readers in no doubt that he aligns the task of proclaiming the gospel with bodily and psychological effort. For Paul, preaching is no mere training run, or just going through the motions (beating the air as we would say) but an activity in which he punishes his bodyenslaving it (v.27)so that he may do the task to his very best ability. For three days we have been living with Paul’s struggles with preaching and ministry. Clearly, he’s not talking about preaching as being akin to fireside chats or little talks about spirituality. Rather, for the apostle the task of proclamation demands that the preacher confront questions of life and existence itself. It is as if Jesus is to be present in the preaching encounter. Whether we are delivering or receiving sermons, Paul would insist that we expect to find Christ present in each one. Response to Scripture: May your kingdom come, Lord Jesus. Question: What are ways of preaching God’s love beyond using words? Sing: TiS 595 O Jesus, I have promised to serve you Psalm: 6 Commemoration: Joseph Henry Davies and missionaries in Korea and JapanChristian pioneers. Pray: for wisdom in supporting worship leaders in your congregation. Writer: Revd Kim Cain

02.01.2022 Daily Reading from With Love to the World Tuesday 01 December 2020... Read: Isaiah 40:111* Introduction to Prayer: The Lord will indeed give what is good. Today’s familiar passage carries a message of comfort (vv.12) yet fragility (vv.68). These elements combined give us a healthy humility. We learn in the middle of suffering that life has hope and meaning, but that we are not the centre of the universe. In God, we can look beyond ourselves to find comfort, and within ourselves to recognize our mortality. Just as comfort and fragility are brought together as a pair, so are images of God’s character. The description of the Lord God coming with might and a strong arm (v.10) concludes with the image of God carrying lambs in his arm and leading a mother sheep. The true power of God is revealed in compassion. These ideas of hope and humility, power and compassion, enrich our reading of verses 35. Instead of simply exhausting the meaning of these verses as predicting John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus, we can learn more about how God’s nature is revealed in Christ. Jesus’ power was to love people into wellness and wholeness. In turn, we learn what true strength is for us: to live hopefully and humbly, by the power of love. Response to Scripture: I will listen to what God, who promises peace, says. Question: Whom do you know who needs comfort at this time? What can you offer them? Sing: TiS 647 Comfort, comfort, all my people Psalm: 85 Commemoration: Charles de Foucauld Pray: Lord God, may I be comforted when I am troubled, and troubled when comfortable. Writer: Revd Dr Robert McFarlane
