25.01.2022 It's here! Our new Yamaha Electric piano arrived at the kinder this week and Karen is looking forward to learning all its tricks. So far we are a fan of the beat button, which will allow the children to join in with their Djembe drums when we are in the music room.

25.01.2022 Construction is about to commence on our future home - Canterbury Community Precinct. Check out this video (minutes 1.30 - 1.52) of the handy little helpers at our Kinder virtually "breaking ground" on behalf of the project and celebrating the start of the construction.

25.01.2022 You are invited the opportunity to purchase this one of a kind artwork created by the 2020 Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten Artist Collective! Every little finger of the 2020 Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten Artist Collective has contributed to this beautiful and visually arresting piece of art. (Just ask Lily and she'll be able to point out which artist coloured where :-)) All parents (and grandparents and friends...) are welcome to bid. A sheet for the silent auction will be ...up at the sign in desk and the final bid will be at 3pm after the Christmas performance. The original is at the sign at the kinder for you viewing prior to the auction

25.01.2022 Were delighted to be giving our Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten children the chance to take part in an Australian childhood tradition! Pictureplates turn your childs art into useful objects that look fantastic and last for years. Theyre fun to make, fun to use, and tough enough to last thousands of washes without cracking or fading. Use this time at home to create a fun memory where your children can create their pictures using paints, pens, photos the brighter the better. Drawing templates are in your child's remote learning activity bag, and further details are in your email inbox. Enjoy!

24.01.2022 It has been great to see so many friendly faces in our Zoom meetings this past week! We will continue to offer them on Tuesdays and Thursdays going forward. Making these meetings a regular item in the children's days will help them keep up with what we are doing at kindergarten, and let them feel connected to their friends.

24.01.2022 In honour of Early Child Educator's Day - the Kinder's Committee would like to say a great big "thank you" to Karen, Lee, and Lily! Thank you for all for all the love, care, and kindness you give to our children each day. Your dedication to helping instill within our children a love of learning, and to imagine, be inquisitive, and explore is unmatched. Thank you!

22.01.2022 Happiest of Birthdays to our wonderful wonderful wonderful Karen!

22.01.2022 What’s that in the container? They are wriggling around and are very small white stripy worms. We have some newly hatched silk worms at kinder that we will need to look after and watch as they grow and develop first into big hungry caterpillars who will spin silken cocoons only to emerge a few weeks later as moths. They will live for only a few days just long enough to lay more eggs.

22.01.2022 In honor of what would have been "Torch Night" 2020 at the Kinder, we challenge you to make a paper bag puppet at home. In non-covid years, the children make pizza for dinner at the kinder and Karen and Lee put on a spectacular torch lit puppet show. In your child's special activity bag are are supplies and directions on how to make your own puppet at home.

20.01.2022 Burrrrrr it's cold out there! Winter is well underway and with it, some winter themes around the kindergarten - such as this snowy winter play dough with sparkly beads and sequins. The play dough table offers a great opportunity for the children to sit and chat about what they are doing, and a place to engage with other children. The rolling, pinching, squeezing, and shaping help develop fine motor skills, and the childrens imaginations. It also gives them the opportunity to use language to explain what they are doing.

20.01.2022 Ahoy! The Kinder has been invaded by pirates! They docked their ship in the playroom, cracked the treasure map code, and made their way for the sandpit. There they discovered treasure! More specifically, after donning the pirate hats they had made earlier in the morning, the pirates found 17 gold nuggets! However, we knew there were 18 altogether because they had numbers on them and the elusive number 6 remained missing. So we searched some more, digging here and there in th...e sand, when suddenly we hit something hard! Was it a rock? We scraped away the sand and discovered a treasure chest! After prying off the lid - the pirates discovered a chest full of jewels! Hummmm, but now, how could we protect it? The pirates decided to make a new pirate ship from the big outdoor blocks, and then safely stored the treasure in the ship. Next we added some cannons to keep the baddies at bay while we had lunch. But it didn't work! While at lunch, the treasure was hidden again and we had to start all over again!

20.01.2022 Another winter themed invitation to play laid out in our playroom this week.

19.01.2022 A great big Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there!

19.01.2022 Magic Stick Twirling! On Monday, when asked to do some magic at lunch time - Lee produced a magical pillow she spun around her fingers. The children can never get enough of her special skills! She then said she would bring out her magic spinning stick on Tuesday. She first used a doll to spin around it, demonstrating so the children knew what would happen. Then outside at lunch the children each had a turn to stand on the two pegs, hug the post, and close their eyes while counting to ten, and then Lee would spin them around. So many giggles!

18.01.2022 This week's Kinder at Home Packs are out! This week, it is spring and the weather is warming up. There are blossoms on the trees and flowers in the garden. We can have a picnic, look at some snakes, make a woven picnic mat or spring picture, and grow some grass in your Hairy Harry/Harriett!

18.01.2022 Our creativity is flowing at the craft table this week!

18.01.2022 A reminder to families to remember to ensure that there is social distancing when waiting to collect children at the end of the day. Parents should also remember to wear a face mask as of Thursday this week.

18.01.2022 As you have probably guessed.... we have had to cancel Thursday's planned storytelling incursion due to Covid-19 restrictions. But don't worry - tomorrow will still be filled with lots of fun, imagination and laughter!

18.01.2022 Picture Plates are in! Available for pickup at the Kinder starting tomorrow.

17.01.2022 Reminder - ZOOM Sessions with children at home start Tuesday. Plan for music, circle time and more. We will be offering two sessions, one from 11:00 to 11.30am and the other from 1:15 - 1:45pm.

17.01.2022 In the music room we have been making up songs on the xylophone using two notes - C and E, to show the children how to make simple rhythm. The xylophone has also been placed on the table in the playroom where the children can use it during session and experiment on their own. Our bunnies continue be the dominant theme in activities, and the children have made up the following song: Fifi is a Rabbit.... Nicole is one too. They like to eat some carrots. Thats their favourite thing to do. Fifi can run very fast. Nicole is sooo slow. They can run away and sometimes like to stay and play. Run, Run, Run. Rabbits can run away. See more

16.01.2022 Unfortunately, due to Stage 4 restrictions, Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten will be closed as of Thursday. The Kinder will be open tomorrow (Monday) and Tuesday as normal.

15.01.2022 Recently we looked at Monet’s picture to inspire us to use colours in different ways to create light and shadow in our pictures. In a group meeting we talked about the colours in the picture and what they represent and then using a limited palette of colours and their fingers the children were ready to start. We used cut outs of the Japanese Bridge pasted over the top to finish the work. The paintings turned out beautiful!

15.01.2022 Looking forward to zooming with our at home friends tomorrow!

14.01.2022 Unfortunately due to current COVID-19 circumstances we will need to cancel Saturday's working bee. We hope to be able to reschedule it once things settle down. Thank you to all the parents who had volunteered to join us this coming Saturday, we are very grateful to have your support and appreciate your willingness to lend your time and efforts.

14.01.2022 This week's science themed Kinder Home Packs have been delivered! We look forward to seeing what all of our little friends will be able to create this week.

14.01.2022 It has been busy in the garden at kinder for children and staff. We have been weeding the garden beds, pruning back the bushes, planting new bean and zucchini seedlings, harvesting carrots, snow peas and radishes and then feeding all the excess to the worms. We would hope that all the children leave kinder with a keen awareness of where their food comes from and an understanding about the connection between people and the environment.

13.01.2022 Karen Szabo, teacher and director at Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten talks about Belong, Grow And Blossom at the kinder.

13.01.2022 Fancy a weekend pet? A special thank you to families who are able to take Fifi and Nicole home for the weekend. If you are able to have the rabbits on the weekends please let us know and we will put together a roster. Even if families are not currently attending, but would like to spend some time with the rabbits - we would love to hear from you!

10.01.2022 Ohhhh feels like Christmas! Today's the day! Karen and Lee will be dropping of your child's activity bag today!

09.01.2022 We know these are challenging times, but we are here for you! Karen and Lee have been busy putting together special activity bags to help keep the kids occupied at home and connected to the Kinder. Be on the lookout for them next week!

09.01.2022 Don't forget, tomorrow is our Teddy Bear Picnic. It is going to be Teddy-rific! Both our online and onsite children should pack a picnic and come prepared to sing and dance! We will also have a teddy bear show and tell, with opportunity for everyone to tell us what is special about their bear.

08.01.2022 Don't forget! Tomorrow is D-Day for masks. All parents, grandparents, and caregivers need to wear a mask when dropping off and picking up the children at kindergarten.

08.01.2022 Don't forget tomorrow is picture day! Bring your biggest smile (and perhaps a clean shirt ).

08.01.2022 This year's Melbourne cup has passed, but we still couldn't resist taking an opportunity to show off the children's work. Right before the Cup the children were busy preparing their horses for the running of our very own Kinder cup! Any bets on who won?

08.01.2022 What am I good at and what do I find challenging? A group discussion under the stretchy lycra. Some are good are football, riding bikes, or drawing. While some find it difficult to write their names, read, ride a two wheeler, or even kick the football. It is important to know that we cant be good at everything, and the children to understand that everyone finds difficult things challenging.

07.01.2022 Don't forget - Picture plate orders are due September 4th. We'd love to see pictures of your designs in the comments below!

07.01.2022 Ohhhhh it's starting to feel like Halloween around the Kinder!

07.01.2022 It has been a big week for Victoria - here are a few comments the children made when they found out some of the COVID restrictions had eased.

06.01.2022 Marble Painting Over the last few weeks we have chatted about simple machines, and in particular what happens on an inclined plane. Cars go faster down steeper slopes, and if the slope is level the cars will stop. Today we brought this concept alive through marble painting. The children were able to move paint covered marbles around a container by tilting it forwards, backwards and side to side. The result is colourful pictures which are fun and easy to do. Painting aids children acquire hand-eye coordination as they learn to manipulate the marbles across the paper and going where they want it to go to fill a space. They are also learning to use a teaspoon to collect the marbles from the paint tray and transfer them to their painting tray.

03.01.2022 For today's Zoom calls, please remember to ask your child to bring something that they have made or found that is special, so they can share it with the group during the meeting.

02.01.2022 Pop Sticks! Pop sticks were the canvas for this week's craft activity with children using felt tipped pens to colour and add patterns to the sticks. When finished, we will create a group artwork for display. This activity requires the children to make multiple sticks and encourages them to really think about how they can make each stick different. Sometimes they will stick with solid colour for several sticks and then change to add spots, stripes, and different patterns.

02.01.2022 Life Drawing at Kinder With FiFi and Nicole now hoping around at Kinder during the day, they have become a good subject for our paintings. Here, the children looked at a painting of a rabbit and we identified the characteristics of a rabbit, e.g. ears, head, body, tail, and whiskers. Then we left the children to come up with their own versions of FiFi and Nicole to add to our gallery in the Kinder.

01.01.2022 Don't forget - tomorrow is our AGM via Zoom. Hope to "see" you there.

01.01.2022 STEM - Walking Water This past week we experimented with walking water at the Kinder. We explored how to get water from one glass to another without pouring it. We needed two glasses of equal size, water, blue food colouring and paper towel.... Procedure: 1. Set your two glasses about 2 cm apart 2. Pour water into one of the glasses until its halfway full. 3. Add a few drops of you favourite food colouring to the water. 4. Stir the food colouring until the water is one colour 5. Take a strip of paper towel and fold it into a sausage shape and bend it in half 6. Place one end of the paper towel into the coloured water and the other end into the empty glass. Let them sit for an hour. Half of the coloured water travelled to the other side of the cup and the paper will be the same colour as the water you started with.
