24.01.2022 Canterbury Local news AFFORDABLE housing and aged care accommodation is the next step in departing Lakemba state Labor MP Rob Furolo’s career. Mr Furolo announced he would step away from politics in August this year.... Last week he told The Express he was looking at working with community housing organisations to help them with policy and project work. In my work over the past 20 years as a councillor, mayor and MP a lot of it has been about housing affordability and the hardships people face, Mr Furolo said. There are a lot of people that are desperate to get into public housing because they cannot afford property rent. In my last speech in Parliament I mentioned that nearly 40 per cent of people who are suffering from housing stress have had their children miss out on medical or dental appointments. We have to look at the long term with these things becoming chronic medical issues. It is about being able to resolve this issue as I believe it is fundamental. Mr Furolo has been an MP since 2008 and admits he will miss his political career. I feel a sense of accomplishment and I’m excited about new challenges ahead, he said. 18.01.2022 A Moment in time.... Canterbury Palace Picture taken between 1950-1960's. Canterbury Palace Picture. ( Was located at 202 New Canterbury Rd, Canterbury ) Canterbury Palace Picture Theatre was situated at 202 Canterbury Road, Canterbury. The Palace opened in 1922 and seated 910 patrons. Over the years this house was managed by numerous exhibitors including Bill McKenzie who was exhibitor in the 1930s.... The last exhibitor, the late Cecil Horan, operated the Palace for five and a half years prior to closure, screening quality programmes. With eye-catching daily press advertisements, Cecil attracted patrons to the Palace and created a friendly family cinema. He always had a policy of shaking patrons' hands and saying goodnight at the conclusion of every session and encouraged patrons to let him know if they wished to see a particular film. Cecil unfortunately was unable to save the Palace from closure and the final screening was held on Saturday the 12th October, 1960 showing Alfred Hitchcock's - "Shadow of a doubt" also Deanna Durbin in "His Butler's Sister". After the cinema was closed, the building was converted into an electrical storeroom - Buckley Bros Electrical Showroom. The building was demolished during December, 1998. 18.01.2022 Home buyers feel that Australia’s housing market is vulnerable and anticipating correction. Market sentiment surveys have conducted that 68% of people believed there may be a correction post financial year. Sydney and Melbourne marets have recorded the greatest surge over the last two years and market was vulnerable to a significant correction was 68.6% and 67.3% respectively.... Even respondents from areas where values have seen minimal growth over recent years were inclined to think a significant correction is a possibility. Although, the survey also revealed that the vast majority of respondents continue to feel that it is a good time to buy property. Over the September 2014 quarter, 66% of respondents felt that now was a good time to buy a property. However, the proportion has fallen from 71% of respondents over the June quarter. Cameron Kusher, RP Data’s senior research analyst, said that the decrease in those who felt it is a good time to buy is no surprise. Most respondents still felt as if it is a good time to buy property, although with the current growth period having run for so long it isn’t a surprise to see a slight fall in the proportion of respondents who think now is a good time to buy. The survey revealed that only 52.8% of respondents thought now was a good time to buy in Sydney the lowest of all the capital cities. Meanwhile, 78.2% of respondents thought that now was a good time to sell in Sydney the highest of all the capital cities. As Sydney has recorded the strongest capital gains over the last two years, this agrees with Kusher’s statement that home buyers would be cynical about any further capital gains Paper Source - local update Canterbury Real Estate Blog

12.01.2022 Rates to drop, then rise in 2015: Westpac's Bill Evans Bill Evans, who has been cheekily dubbed the interest rate whisperer by the Daily Telegraph's business columnist Scott Rochfort, has issued a revised 2015 rates advisory. "While we still expect rates to be on the rise in 2016 as the world economy gathers considerable momentum, we now expect the RBA to cut rates further in the early months of 2015 in an effort to bolster domestic demand and lower the AUD before evidence on... the world economy becomes clearer around the middle of the year," he said. "We now expect the RBA to cut rates by 25bps in February and again in March prior to another period of stability." The surprise call came on late Thursday afternoon shortly after Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs made similar forecasts amid signs the slowing pace of economic growth in Australia. Evans noted on housing, the RBA has sensed a clear moderation in price appreciation in recent months. "The Bank also has some scope to use macro prudential tools to contain any further sharp upswing in investor housing activity, if it were to occur," Evans said. "Of course the next Board meeting is not until 3 February and much could change over that period." Article by Jonathan Chancellor | 5 December 2014 Property Observer
