21.01.2022 100,000 meals delivered during COVID Stage 4 Restrictions! As of the 28th of September, 101,088 meals have been delivered through the COVID-19 #FORaMEAL pro...ject. Over 25 organisations from community groups, food banks, churches and multicultural groups have supported our distribution efforts. A huge shout out to all the volunteers, distribution partners, Rotarians, and Rotary Clubs across Victoria. Specifically to the leadership team who have worked around the lock for the last 2 months - Val Cunniffe, Lilianne Kriegler, Doug Hawley, Tony Laycock and Kevin Xiao. The FORaMEAL team will continue to deliver meals packs which are available FREE OF CHARGE from partner organisations located all across Melbourne. We are looking for support (in kind and financial) to help us replenish our current stock for deliveries into our disaster prone countries in the Asian Pacific Region for 2021. We cannot do this alone! Support us @forameal.org

16.01.2022 It’s already been a long five weeks under strict lockdown for many Victorians. And there’s still a long way to go. During this time, 7.30 crews captured images ...that show just how much life in Melbourne, and parts of Victoria, changed. 14.01.2022 3,600 meals gratefully received .... The FORaMEAL team was contacted in late August to assist Temple Beth Israel with their Project Dignity initiative. Project Dignity focusses on aiding refugees from many nations, a plight well recognised in the Jewish community. The current COVID restrictions has increased the isolation of refugees and as a result many of them do not have sufficient basic privisions to survive, nor are they eligible fr Government assistance. FORaMEAL has been happy to help and stands ready to do more. If you would like to join this amazing poroject by donating visit: https://forameal.org/ Rotary Club of Canterbury recognises the amazing work of the FORaMEAL team and the support from Kevin Xiao and Mates https://www.matesforchange.org/

14.01.2022 "As a part of the GP rotation, I was lucky enough to be able to fly to a remote Aboriginal community, Peppimenarti, every Tuesday (until Covid-19 restrictions f...ell into place and this component of the placement was put on hold). Peppimenrti, or ‘Peppi’ as it is commonly known, is an Aboriginal community in the Daly River region in the top end of the Northern Territory, 320km south west of Darwin. It has a small health clinic that is run mainly by nurses and Aboriginal Health workers, and doctors and other allied health members fly in and out throughout the week. I was able to assess patients individually and learnt many clinical skills under the supervision of the fantastic nurses and Aboriginal Health workers that work in the clinic. It was truly a great experience and has only increased my desire to one day work in the rural and remote setting in the NT." - Kate Postans, Indigenous Health Scholarship (Bachelor of Medicine) Sponsored by: Rotary District 9790 Inc More about Kate: https://buff.ly/2RWB4L3

13.01.2022 Amazing achievement!

13.01.2022 Alpha-1 is a project of the Rotary Club of Canterbury. November is ALPHA-1 AWARENESS MONTH Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is a protein we all make in our liver. This protein travels through our bloodstream to protect our lungs mainly, but it also protects our body from inflammation. If you have a deficiency of AAT protein, it means you have a genetic mutation that stops all of that AAT protein from leaving the liver which means some of the AAT is stuck in the liver and can cause liver disease. It also means smaller amounts than normal and sometimes none of the AAT protein is available to protect the lungs, which can cause lungs disease. This is a basic explanation of what Alpha-1 is (as it is commonly known as)

09.01.2022 Most people have heard of Rotary Youth Exchange, the world’s biggest and best-known student cultural exchange program. But not everyone would know that it came ...about thanks to Australian Rotarians. Since it was conceived, Rotary Youth Exchange, or as it was once known, Rotary Student Exchange, has become one of Rotary’s most respected and valuable programs. The current Rotary Youth Exchange program had its genesis in an exchange between Australian Rotary clubs and clubs in Nebraska, US, back in 1959. The program’s ongoing success over the following years led to its official adoption worldwide in 1972. It started at an international assembly of Rotary governors, held at Lake Placid in the US in 1958. Harley Shaver, a past governor from Nebraska, asked many of those present to go home and consider a new idea of student exchange. This proposed exchange would enable students to spend a year in a different country, in a different culture, while going to school. Joe Bradbury, an incoming governor from District 280, Australia, accepted the challenge of an exchange between his district and the district in Nebraska, currently Rotary International District 5450. Joe asked two enthusiastic Rotarians, Peter Barnett, of Myrtleford Rotary and Clive Schliebs, of the Rotary Club of Wangaratta (@rotarywangaratta.org.au), now Rotary District 9790 (@rotary9790), to both develop the program’s rules and promote participation. The very first exchange was eventually held between District 280 and the district in Nebraska when, in January 1959, John Rogers, a 15-year-old student from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, arrived in Myrtleford. At the same time, two Australian students, Nick Rutherford and Norm Jordon, left District 280 for Scottsbluff and Grand Lake, Colorado. It was these first three Rotary Youth Exchange students who started what has now become an opportunity of a lifetime for so many others. Today, between 8000 and 9000 exchanges are arranged each year affording students from around 80 countries of the Rotary world the opportunity of a lifetime. Check out the full story in the September edition of Rotary Down Under. In mailboxes and inboxes now!
