15.01.2022 Using bad science or false science is now a regular practice by a range of individuals and organisations particularly those who do not have the courage to accept the truth of good science and use bad science to perpetuate denial or self interest. It is very important in permaculture to understand what science is telling us about the adverse effects climate change and how then as food producers we can mitigate these effects. The image below dated 2015 will help us to be more discerning about scientific claims.

08.01.2022 Saving Water and Recycling Nutrients We live on a rural property that relies on tank water. Whilst we have a 60,000 liter storage capacity I have always been unhappy that we have two flushing toilets. Secondly, our Western culture through ignorance refuses opportunities to recycle the nutrients from our own bodily functions. In our rural residential circumstances the 'Appropriate Technology' to change all this has been readily available for some time. Enter the 'Ecoflo Nat...ure Loo' composting toilet. The sequence on how to DIY install one is in the images. Image One: Remove existing system and cap off the waste pipe. Don't forget to tell the household when you are going to do this! Image two and three: Build platform for the Nature Loo. I wanted a bit more elevation outside the house to ensure that the excess fluid in the system would have enough fall to easily drain away. Image three: Drill the holes though the external wall for the excess fluid drain (purple pipe) and ventilation system, install pipes. This was the most 'technical bit' especially when your stud finder is having an off day and you have to drill a second hole. Image four: Install new system. The red bucket is a wood chip pee bucket. This is not essential. The Nature Loo composting process is enzyme driven and can handle both solid and liquid input but I want to recycle the nutrient from some of my 'yellow water' in other composting processes. Image five: Install the ventilation system which is driven by a 2 watt 12 volt fan. Extend and site the excess fluid pipe a good distance away from the house to a reticulation system or, as may be the case at a later date when I am satisfied I can safely deal with the pathogen burden, into a duck weed propagation system Six: Commission system, image not available.

06.01.2022 Great idea and so easy to construct.

05.01.2022 Understanding your Bioregion. One of the delights about our property is the range of frog species in residence. Over the seasons we can hear up to 14 different calls and we have been advised that we may be hearing another four or so as some of the calls are pretty similar. But its one thing to hear them and quite another to visually identify individual species. So armed with the Australian Museum frog call app on the mobile and a reasonable quality macro lens on the DSLR we ...are starting to match calls to frogs. Below from left to right are Bleating Tree Frog, Broad Palmed Rocket Frog and Eastern Sedge Frog. We know we have Pobblebonks and Tusked Frog (Rare) as we keep digging them up when working the veg beds and the app confirms their presence. Great Barred Frogs, Green Treefrogs and Southern Orange-eyed Treefrog all heard and seen. Imagery is key so only another 15 or so to go! Knowing what's out there is key to how we manage our property and so maintain and enhance the biodiversity of the Bioregion.
