25.01.2022 Canungra Markets are back next weekend!!

25.01.2022 The Shoe Vault celebrating six years in business. Congratulations!

22.01.2022 Putting the October edition of Canungra Times together at the moment and it's a different ball game these days. After working on my own for about 10 years, it's great to have a couple of people around helping to share the workload. I have to say, The Canungra Times has always been dependent on the input from the community - and what a great community we have. ... Whether it is the local businesses who support us through advertising or people who send articles or columns in, the support has always been incredible, and very much appreciated. Then there are the people who just pop in or send a message to see how I'm going, friends I've met through the paper or people I haven't met but feel comfortable to touch base that way. It's an important part of a small town newspaper and I feel really privileged to be part of this community. Thank you, Canungra, just for being you.

22.01.2022 The deadline for advertising and editorial for the October edition of The Canungra Times is 5pm next Tuesday 22nd September. For advertising enquiries please call Farah on 0492 906 098 or email [email protected] For news and editorial please call Keer on 0407 671 286 or email [email protected]

18.01.2022 The food truck event that was to be held in Canungra on Easter Sunday has been postponed.

18.01.2022 Human beings need new beginnings, endings, goals. The end of the year is often viewed with hope of better things to come and I'm sure 2020 is no exception. While we are still in a state of uncertainty about the impact of COVID-19 next year, so far Australia has been fortunate. Canungra started 2020 still in shock over bushfires and water shortages, watching in horror as the fires spread until it felt like the whole country was burning.... We end the year thankful for the recent rain which has filled the Canungra Creek and made the paddocks green and lush. Unfortunately this also gives the powers that be breathing space to continue to do nothing about the water supply and unsustainable development in the area. Let's hope 2021 sees some sensible solutions to this. Personally, 2020 was a year I never thought I'd have. If you told me two years ago that I would run for Council and started another paper this year, I wouldn't believe it. There have been so many changes, so many challenges. No regrets. I want to thank the people who stuck by me through the COVID restrictions - every advertiser in the paper, the community who pulled together, the people who sent news stories in from their own homes - this enabled The Canungra Times to keep printing and gain strength when many newspapers closed. The support is appreciated and very humbling. I'm looking at 2021 with more hope and excitement for the future. The addition of the Beaudesert Bulletin in July 2020 saw me working with two incredible people - Rob Brown (Printing / Logistics / Ad Sales) and Kate Cahill (Graphic Design). In 2021 we will be joined by another Journalist with extensive experience in community newspapers - I'll be working with the 'Dream Team'. Late in 2020 we added 'Beechmont Buzz' to The Canungra Times. This was the brainchild of Farah Hall and it is great to have Beechmont's own section in the paper It has been difficult to keep across everything and staff the office in Canungra, but this is a priority for 2021. Wishing you all a safe and Happy New Year. Keer (a few photos from 2020, many of these are courtesy Katherine O'Brien)

17.01.2022 Local fire ban for South East Region residents Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) has imposed a local fire ban for South East Region residents. The local fire ban will be in place from 00:01am Wednesday 23 September for residents in the Logan, Scenic Rim, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley and Somerset local government areas.... Conditions are perfect for bushfires to ignite and spread quickly. Under a local fire ban all open fires are prohibited and all Permits to Light Fire which have been issued in the designated areas have been cancelled. Power tools may be used during a local fire ban however QFES encourages people to use these with extreme care and ensure adequate equipment is available to extinguish any fire which may start. This may include having a person available to watch out for any ignitions that occur. The ban is expected to remain in place until 11:59pm Saturday 26 September. Information on fire bans and the exemptions that can apply can be found on the RFS website, www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au.

09.01.2022 With no recent rainfall in the catchment, flows in Canungra Creek have almost stopped, moving Canungra into level three drought response this afternoon. It’s ex...pected the Seqwater Canungra Water Treatment Plant will be taken offline in the coming days. Seqwater will continue to monitor the situation and is ready to start tankering as soon as it is required. The Canungra tanker filling station will remain open for local off-network households for direct use through the 25mm outlet, however the 75mm outlet will be closed from 3pm on Friday 27 November. From then, commercial carters will be required to use alternative filling stations, with the closest being in Beaudesert. Water restrictions remain in place and we’re encouraging everyone to rally together and save as much water as possible. We know you’re already a really diligent community when it comes to water saving, and we thank you for being so mindful through these hot, dry conditions.

09.01.2022 Our December 2020 /January 2021 edition is available online now - the hard copies will be out on Friday. We are having a little break over Christmas/New Year and we will be back in February 2021 (deadline is 26th January). I'll be keeping up with some of the news around town through the Facebook page over the break.... I'll also be at Canungra Markets on 13 December with a few of the team, including Loki - come along for a pat! Thank you all for your support this year - readers, community members, businesses and the people who have been working on both The Canungra Times and Beaudesert Bulletin for the last six months. A special mention to Jenny Pack, Kate Cahill and Rob Brown who have been instrumental in both of the papers. It feels like a bit of a roller coaster, hopefully 2021 will be a little less eventful... did I say that at the end of 2019? https://issuu.com/canngratimes/docs/ct_december_2020_web

08.01.2022 BAN ON PUMPING WATER FROM CANUNGRA CREEK Michael Fraser, Secretary of the Canungra Creek Water Advisory Committee, has just advised that, due to low flows in the Canungra Creek, there is a ban on pumping from Canungra Creek for any uses other than household and water for animals. This applies to anyone living on Canungra Creek or taking water directly from the Creek for any purpose.... Michael said he has been in contact with Water Resources today as well as other members of the Water Advisory Committee. "We have elected to place Canungra Creek on an irrigation ban until the water situation improves." "That means that people are entitled for household use and for animals but it stops there." "We seek the cooperation of everybody and as soon as the situation improves they will be advised." "In years gone by Canungra Creek Water Advisory Committee worked hand in hand with Scenic Rim Regional Council to get cooperation from both sides (the Committee and Council) so that Canungra had enough water for its needs. Today we have no control over the town of Canungra but the farmers don’t want the township to be in a situation where the town has water carted for use," said Michael. For enquiries and further information please contact Michael Fraser on 0408 778 135. Canungra township itself is currently on medium level water restrictions and residents are urged to save water where possible.

06.01.2022 Local Fire Ban will remain in place until 11.59pm Monday (7/12). Under a local fire ban, all open fires are prohibited (subject to exemptions) and all Permits to Light Fire which have been issued in the designated areas have been cancelled.

05.01.2022 KILLARNEY GLEN PERMANENT CLOSURE The Department of Defence today announced the permanent closure of Killarney Glen to the public following a safety review of the site. The Killarney Glen falls and rock pool area form part of Defence’s Canungra Field Training Area which is used by the Australian Defence Force for live-fire and other field training activities.... After the tragic drowning of a member of public at Killarney Glen in December 2016, Defence closed public access to the site pending a review of the safety risks associated with the area. The safety review of Killarney Glen identified a number of dangerous hazards at the falls and rock pool area, including steep rock cliff-faces, submerged objects and fast-flowing water. These hazards, and Killarney Glen’s large visitor numbers, led to multiple injuries at the site prior to December 2016. Based on the findings of the safety review and expert legal and recreational advice, the Department of Defence has decided not to reopen Killarney Glen to the public. The Scenic Rim and Gold Coast hinterland has a number of safer alternatives including Cedar Creek Falls, Curtis Falls and Natural Bridge, which remain open to the public. 02.01.2022 A group of locals in Beaudesert is fighting to save century-old saleyards as the town undergoes an $8 million dollar development. Some residents are concerned the town is losing it's agricultural roots as urban sprawl encroaches on the regional hub, just an hour away from Brisbane.
