25.01.2022 About 12% of Australians will develop PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) in their lifetime, and 25% of people who've witnessed a traumatic life event are at risk of developing PTSD [1]. Following the unprecedented events of the bushfire and the ongoing pandemic, the statistics on PTSD are projected to increase. Some people opt for an alternative way of treating PTSD. State-funded agencies like the DVA (Department of Veterans' Affairs) explore the idea of cannabis as a tr...eatment for PTSD-stricken military veterans. The DVA in 2017 supported a study on medical cannabis for PTSD operated by the Phoenix Australia Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health [4]. A breakthrough study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology suggests that people with PTSD with no history of cannabis usage are at risk of major depressive episodes and suicidal ideation by seven and five times, respectively. 25.01.2022 Ever wondered what cannabis indica and sativa means? Dispensaries often segregate cannabis into two main strains, indica and sativa. More than the difference in looks, there is a slight variation when it comes to the components of the strains, but that doesn’t really yield any significant difference in effects. There is a lot of misinformation around indica and sativa, so we’ve answered the top four questions that patients ask:... 1. What is believed to be the therapeutic effects of sativa? It's believed to treat depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. 2. What is believed to be the therapeutic effects of indica? It's believed to treat sleeping problems, anxiety, and inflammation. 3. Will sativa make me high? There is no conclusive answer on whether sativa gives the body highs, but it is believed to provide cerebral and body high. For more information on the differences and education about sativa and indica strains please click here https://canview.com.au/whats-the-difference-between-indica/. 25.01.2022 Palliative care refers to end-of-life care. However, the patient who receives such care does not always necessarily mean that he is nearing death. Regardless of the condition, palliative care always strives to elevate the patient’s quality of life which often means bending some medical rules to fulfil a patient’s dying wish or to make the patient more comfortable. Australia authorises the use of prescriptive medical cannabis for palliative care under current access. Much of... what cannabis can offer for palliative care is the idea that it’s an option, readily available when a patient needs it. Cannabis might not be suitable for each type of biochemistry. Still, the idea that it could provide comfort to others is a highly regarded form of a contribution to Australia’s palliative healthcare system. Some clinical trials suggest that cannabis’s cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have several decent efficacies for a number of symptoms associated with palliative care such as pain, chemotherapy side effects, loss of appetite, weight loss, and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). 23.01.2022 Can I overdose on Cannabis? Medical Cannabis in the Australian scene is considerably well-guided with several laws in place by regulatory bodies like the Office of Drug Control and Therapeutic Goods Administration. In effect, cases of an overdose on licit cannabis usage are uncommon. In a 2018 study, a research team concluded that no deaths were due to direct cannabis toxicity, but death due to accidental injury was prominent. However, like any other drug, cannabis overdose... is not impossible, but it can be hard to achieve. Overdose relates to several things. For example, a cannabis overdose can mean taking a dose beyond what your body can handle or tolerate and it doesn’t necessarily mean death. Cannabis overdose with THC cannabis commonly has a sedative effect, which is avoided by slow dose escalation. Want to find out more about how to handle a cannabis overdose? 23.01.2022 At the beginning of 2020, it was suggested by the Department of Health (DOH) that low strength CBD products to be available over the counter at pharmacies. This recommendation was proposed to the Advisory Committee on Medicine Scheduling (ACMS). The committee took public appeal and reviewed these submissions. They also reviewed any other recommendations about making CBD oil more accessible for patients. The ACMS has come back with their first decision, their interim decision,... which broadly agreed with the government’s original proposal. So, what does this mean for patients, pharmacists, and doctors? At the moment, this decision is nothing notable. In short, before CBD is accessible over the counter, it must be listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). However, the ACMS has made requirements and recommendations which does show potential of stepping forward. 19.01.2022 The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announced a final decision to down-schedule certain low dose cannabidiol (CBD) preparations from Schedule 4 (Prescription Medicine) to Schedule 3 (Pharmacist Only Medicine). The decision will allow low-dose CBD containing products, up to a maximum of 150 mg/day, for use in adults that have been approved by the TGA, to be supplied over the counter by a pharmacist, without a prescription. The decision limits over-the-counter supply to ...only those products that are approved by the TGA and included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). The decision also outlines additional limits on dosage form and packaging requirements, including pack size and child-resistant closures. 16.01.2022 CBD (cannabidiol), one of cannabis’s compounds, is riddled with myths and misconceptions. The existence of such can be partly attributed to the fact that no one really polices information about CBD or cannabis in general, and not every one is updated on the latest research about it. As a pharmacist, doctor or even a patient, it’s in your best interest to distinguish between fact and fiction, especially if it’s health-related. To start, let’s extinguish five CBD myths and m...isconceptions. 1. CBD binds with the endocannabinoid’s receptors. 2. CBD has the same medical benefits as THC but without you getting high. 3. CBD works in a snap. 4. There is a dire body of research on CBD’s medical benefits. 5. The more CBD, the better the results. 12.01.2022 October 17th will be a remarkable date for New Zealand, as on this date the population will vote for the proposed cannabis legalisation. The country is the first one to give the public the power to decide. The latest polls show that the numbers are quite similar between those supporting and against the new law. According to Horizon Research, from 1,300 people interviewed, precisely 49.5% voted yes, and other 49.5% voted no for legalisation. Another poll by UMR market researc...h pointed 49% pro legalisation. The new proposal allows a person aged 20 or over to: 1. Buy, share up to 14 g of dried cannabis 2. Grow up to 2 plants (maximum of 4 plants per household) The bill was created aiming to eliminate the illegal supply and consume of cannabis in the country and control the production of cannabis, by regulating the market. If cannabis become legal in New Zealand it will generate roughly $1.1 billion in taxes every year, forecasted to boost the GDP by $440 million and create jobs for over 5,000 New Zealanders. 06.01.2022 The growing opportunity in the medical cannabis market seems tied up to Australia's progressive view on cannabis. Lately, the arrival of progressive legislation the Australian government is making is one of the biggest driving forces for the cannabis market to progress. The government maintains a progressive yet tight view of medical cannabis. Somehow this prompts the increase in growing cannabis consumerism. In fact, by the end of 2017, 158 individuals were approved for m...edical cannabis, cut to January 2019, where the approval numbers shot to around 2,800. The number of approved patients is still growing and is further supported by the Therapeutic Goods Administration's (TGA) new and improved, streamlined process of approval. Another important statistic to note would be that the number of medical cannabis products available in the Australian market, has also risen exponentially, growing from only 11 products accessible in Q3 2017 to a mammoth 150 products in Q3 2020. 06.01.2022 How long does it take for CBD to work? This question might have popped on your mind while selecting a CBD product. The answer to this question is far from absolute because CBD’s response rate differs for each user because there are different factors that dictate how fast the effect will come and go. These factors include dose, body weight, CBD concentration, method of consumption and individual biological factors. The one thing that seems to be uniformed on average is the met...hod of consumption. 1. Inhalation: Inhalation is the fastest route to feel something almost immediately. Because inhalation is a direct administration of a vapour to the lungs down to the bloodstream, the effect typically comes in minutes. 2. Topical: The topical application applies CBD on a localised area of the skin. The response rate would depend on the type of condition the patient is trying to treat. If it’s the inflammation of the joints, it would just take a couple of minutes or an hour. If it’s stress-related, the body would need more hours to get acquainted with CBD. 3. Sublingual application: In the sublingual application, the user drops a tincture of CBD oil under the tongue. Some report the effect to be almost right away, but realistically, the method typically renders effect anywhere from 15-60 minutes. 4. Oral: This method refers to the swallowing of a pill or edible and would usually take effect after 90 minutes or so. The oral method takes longer than usual because the capsule has to go through the several processes involved in the digestive system before the bloodstream absorbs it. 05.01.2022 The discovery of cannabis's two major cannabinoids, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) led to several things - the plant's therapeutic effects were even more celebrated, and the quest to how the plant's compounds work in the human body has never been this enthusiastically pursued. After some time, science finally introduced the vast network of cellular receptors and molecules that's responsible for eliciting the effects made by cannabis's cannabinoids. This netw...ork comes in the form of ECS or the endocannabinoid system. The ECS is a complicated network of varying functions. Until now, experts still consider ECS as an ocean of uncharted potentials. What seems apparent for now is that the main function of the ECS is to restore balance. Its homeostatic regulation ensures that the biological processes in the human body are functioning smoothly. An example of why balance is required is, if the body's temperature erratically spikes and drops, it'll be an uncomfortable sensation for the individual not to mention the physical functions that might fail as a result of the varying temperatures. The normal or balanced temperature for a human being only runs between 3637C. To continue reading more about the wonder that the ECS is, please continue reading on our blog! 02.01.2022 For today's topic, CanView gives a bird's eye-view on Australia's protocols regarding travelling with medicinal cannabis into the country, within state to state, and out of the country. Travelling with medicinal cannabis or any cannabinoid (cannabis compound) therapy in Australia is legal. However, there are several requirements to acquire such privilege: 1. It must be of ‘personal use’.... 2. A medicinal cannabis prescription administered by a medical practitioner. 3. The medical cannabis product should be within its original packaging labelled appropriately by a dispensing pharmacist 4. Declare all of your medications to the Australia Border Force upon arrival in Australian soil. However, flying outside of Australia is a whole different story. 01.01.2022 In 2019, 300,000 Australians used cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes. Assuming all these people drive, the legal concerns on driving under the influence of cannabis can't be ignored. Generally, one should not drive under the influence of any substance that impairs their cognition. It's illegal to drive with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in the body system Australia-wide. When local authorities do roadside cannabis tests on roadsides and checkpoints, they're mainly... testing whether THC is present in the driver’s system or not. When cannabis was legalised for medical purposes, the Australian Constitution didn’t have guidelines regarding driving. Therefore, protocols were drafted distinctively for each state and territory. The rules on the topic differ slightly from one state to another but are mostly similar.
