23.01.2022 Wage Theft looks like, university management classifying tutorials as "practice classes" to avoid paying staff the full rate, therefore reducing wages by up to a third. Universities also allocated academics just three minutes to mark student assessments, and paid them a set marking "piece rate" in accordance with this. Many postgraduate students, casually employed by the university, would know all about this. Today the NTEU and ACTU have launched a #WageTheft hotline for high...er education workers. Phone lines are now open. Full article in comments

22.01.2022 It is Sunday yes, our Queer Officer Shae, spent sending 45 individual emails to Members of the NSW government, with a CAPA Submission Against the proposed One Nation Anti-discrimination Amendment (Religious Freedom and Equality) Bill 2020 NSW. This Bill overrides all other human rights and anti-discrimination legislation to enshrine the right to discriminate against anyone if they live in contrast to religious succeptabilities and beliefs. This is a dangerous bill. Work...ing hard here to support Equality Australia who are fighting this draconian outrage. We need to be vigilant. Doing my part for LGBTIQ+ folks! 22.01.2022 CAPA would like to acknowledge that today is the start of National Reconcilation Week. The theme for this years Reconciliation Week is In this together. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To launch NRW 2020 Reconciliation Australia is askin...g everyone to take to social media to acknowledge Country. We cannot be physically together to show respect, but we can show respect to Country where we are. On the first day of NRW, take the time to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land that you are on, wherever you are. Choose your social media platform or the privacy of your own space to pay your respects. Consult the AIATSIS Map of Indigenous Australia for a guide to the Traditional Owners of the Land you are on, and tag the Traditional Owners and/or the mob plus #InThisTogether2020 #NRW2020

21.01.2022 These kinds of opportunities arise almost as a normalised, systemic things that happens at universities. It seems very innocent and genuine in nature to provide opportunities for students’. #capaaustralia #teampostgrads #students #studentsinaustralia

21.01.2022 The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) congratulates Dr. Cathy Foley for her recent appointment as the new Chief Scientist of Australia. This is a proud achievement and well deserved for her years of contributions to research in Australia. CAPA is overjoyed by Dr. Cathy Foley’s appointment as the new Chief Scientist of Australia. At a time when research and development will play a crucial role in Australia's economic recovery, it is incredibly hearteni...ng to see a CAPA alumni and an experienced, determined and fabulous woman taking on this challenge. This is a proud moment for CAPA and a proud moment for women in STEMM, said National President Romana Begicevic. CAPA has not forgotten Dr. Foley’s contributions to postgraduate advocacy as a CAPA alumni, serving as CAPA’s National Secretary in 1982. It is from the contributions from individuals like Dr. Foley who are responsible for CAPA’s identity as the national peak body for postgraduates students today. We are proud to see that a CAPA alumni continues to succeed to such great heights years after her time as a student leader. To this day Dr. Foley continues to set an example and pave the way for postgraduates today; showing us how passion and determination can continue unextinguished for years and hopefully for years to come. https://mailchi.mp//media-release-capa-praises-appointment

16.01.2022 The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations welcomes $1 billion in new funding to support research and development at Australian universities. We are pleased the government has listened to our concerns, making a financial commitment to support our best and brightest, before we lose them for good. Australia owes a lot to our primed and ready research workforce. They are not only helping us get through this pandemic but will be important in securing Australia’s futur...e during the post-pandemic economic recovery. Today’s budget commitment provides a lifeline to researchers at a time of great uncertainty facing the sector. The increase in research funding also gets us closer to the OECD average as previously we were below it. https://mailchi.mp//media-release-capa-welcomes-1-billion-

12.01.2022 Today on Mabo day June 3rd, CAPA acknowledges that the Mabo verdict was a watershed moment for Australian law, politics, and history. Mabo Day commemorates the courageous efforts of Eddie Koiki Mabo to overturn the fiction of terra nullius (land belonging to no-one), the legal concept that was falsely used by Britain in claiming possession of Australia, instead of admitting that it was invading land that belonged to Aboriginal people, Britain acted as it were settling an empt...y land. Koiki Mabo and his legal team fought hard to demonstrate that he and his people had traditional land ownership systems on Mer. The case was heard over ten years, progressing from the Queensland Supreme Court to the High Court of Australia. On the 3rd of June 1992, the High Court ruled by a majority of six to one that the Meriam people were entitled as against the whole world to possession, occupation, use and enjoyment of (most of) the lands of the Murray Islands. Unfortunately, Eddie Mabo died 5 months before the historic decision was handed down. The High Courts judgement in the Mabo case resulted in the introduction of the doctrine of native title into Australian law, removing the myth of terra nullius and establishing a legal framework for native title claims by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

11.01.2022 In recognising National Reconciliation week, CAPA reflects the events of 20 years ago today, when over 250,000 people marched across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in support of reconciliation. The Harbour Bridge Walk was the second event in Corrobboree 2000, The symbolic and iconic status of Sydney Harbour Bridge made it an obvious location for a public act of support for reconciliation. The Bridge Walk was a monumental event which saw over 250,000 people, Indigenous and non-Ind...igenous, made their way across the famous Sydney landmark in a continuous stream that lasted nearly six hours. It was the largest political demonstration ever held in Australia. People marched carrying banners and flowers and wearing badges and stickers. Spirits were high despite the chill wind. The Australian and Aboriginal flags flew side by side at the top of the Bridges arch. When a skywriter wrote the word Sorry in the clear sky above the Harbour, the marchers cheered. This act of solidarity showed the then Prime Minister John Howard that he was out of step with public sentiment, and that people supported reconciliation.

09.01.2022 Good news for those publishing in this space. NATSIPA and CAPA were a part of the consultation process for this. The new ANZ research classification system is out The new model replaces the 2008 version. The biggest change is the creation of a new division, Indigenous Studies, (CMM December 3 2019), established after long consultations.... There are 20 fields of research groupssix each for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Mori and Pacific Peoples, broader Indigenous data, methodologies and global studies, and an other. The intent of the division is to make visible in research the knowledges and methodologies unique to Indigenous peoples and capture research activity that is significantly about or involves them. There are extensive changes to other FoR divisions with one from 2008, Technology abolished.

02.01.2022 The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) welcomes commitment from the government, to produce more job-ready graduates, by supporting the delivery of an educated and highly-skilled workforce in areas of teaching, nursing, agriculture, STEM and IT. However, the nature of work and science is constantly changing and we need graduates from all fields of study who can shape this change and respond to it appropriately. Raising the cost of domestic student contr...ibution rates for Law, Commerce and Humanities units is nothing short of disappointing and CAPA strongly opposes increased financial barriers on studies, says Ms Begicevic. The silence on sustainable funding for research and research training is concerning, as it indicates it will receive no additional financial support, and may even lose out in real terms. CAPA will continue to campaign to the government for a funding boost, to postgraduate research students, whose studies have been impacted by COVID-19 and for an investment into the growing demand for research in Australia across the breadth of human knowledge. https://mailchi.mp//media-releasecapa-says-job-ready-gradu
