She has been researching disability law and social issues for over a decade, having previously been a solicitor with the Intellectual Disability Rights Service. Dr Steele teaches civil court procedure law and mental health and disability law. Her research is focused on understandi...ng law’s complex and contradictory relationship to violence, institutionalisation and discrimination, reflecting on what this means for how we engage with legal methods (such as litigation and law reform) to achieve social justice for people with disability. 16.01.2022 On May 6 the UN Secretary-General announced that fatality rate for COVID-19 for people over 80-years-old being five times the global average. Pervasive gerontophobia, the fear of age-related self-degeneration and death, nurtures prejudice against older people, discrimination and ultimately the denial of human rights in older age the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons Rosa Kornfeld-Matte said. We need to stand up now for older person’s rights. A new policy initiative by the UN was announced to address challenges faced by the elderly during and after the pandemic. Many have responded to this call and have returned, or will return to the workforce.
