My sister @trishgoodlife is the lightkeeper and they have a fantastic team that have managed the lighthouse for twenty years. They have transformed a run down facility with lots of love and hard work. Due to a government decision to not renew viable long leases the lighthouse is under threat of closing. Corona has devastated their visitor numbers and an extended lease is the only way to save the lighthouse from heading back into decay. 18.01.2022 As most of Victorias schoolchildren return to learning from home this week we delve into the Cape Otway Lighthouse archives to learn about past schooling in isolation! State school teachers were assigned to Cape Otway on a years secondment. There being only one teacher here at a time, some would describe themselves as being the Head teacher! They would usually lodge with the keepers; this included the last teacher here; Rob Stewart 1962/3, who initially lodged with Bob & ...Joan Brack & their children in the Telegraph Station. At times it was difficult for the teachers to be able to switch off & get away from the children. Some resorted to finding alternative accomodation in the spare Quarters; including the one room 1850 Quarters. Arthur Lewis was a teacher here in 1916, he described how he used to climb the Tower to read and study by the kerosene light of the Fresnel lens. . 10.01.2022 The Balllerina wallpaper visitors can see above the door in the Telegraph Station was chosen by the children of Robert Brack, assistant Lighthouse Keeper at Cape Otway in the 1960s. During this time this room was used as a bedroom. Robert, his wife Joan and their 10 children called the Telegraph Station home from 1960 until 1969. They were the last long term residents of the building which became unoccupied in 1971. #hiddengems

We may not be able to celebrate this year but with the wild weather over the past few days we have been thinking of the rough sea voyages that many have braved over the years. Did you know that Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia and considered the most significant? Built in 1848, the lighthouse known as the Beacon of Hope, sits 90 metres above the pristine ocean of Bass Strait.... Our staff have been dedicated to restoring and maintaining these buildings for two decades! This included urgent replacement of cracked windows, specialist repairing of leaks, removing rust and fixing water damage to the lantern room at the top of the tower, all finished with a specialist repaint to protect the lighthouse for many more years into the future!
