23.01.2022 Changes to the wording on your prescription from February 1. ‘Active ingredient prescribing’ becomes the norm. So you might see a script or repeat with wording that says ‘esomeprazole’ instead of Nexium, ‘atenolol’ instead of Tenormin, or ‘paracetamol’ instead of Panamax. Active ingredient is another word for generic ingredient. It’s the name of the actual medicine in your prescription. ... This change reduces the chance of errors and mis-communication between episodes of care, between doctors, pharmacists, nurses, hospitals and other health care providers. It’s important to note that the product you are supplied with won’t change; in most cases brand choice rests with you, the patient. For more information, ask your pharmacist or have a quick look at the government’s guide here: https://www.nps.org.au//active-ingredient-prescribing-all-

15.01.2022 When supporting an adult with diabetes, it is incredibly hard to know where to draw the line between being helpful and letting your loved one take responsibility for managing their diabetes. You may, however, find you have an unexpected ally in your local community pharmacist. With a third of women between the ages of 25-54 who are caring for someone, visiting a pharmacy at least fortnightly, your community pharmacy is an easily accessible source of advice and support. No one... likes to be told that "it's not good for you", so you may have to pick your battles when it comes to discussing food choices. However, you can stress to your loved one that there is a team of people there to support them, from health professionals like their doctor and pharmacist, to family and friends. Diabetes affects the entire family, not just the person diagnosed, so make sure you look after yourself as well. Having a supportive network that can provide advice and practical help when you need it is a very important part of living well with diabetes. Let your pharmacist know if you’re caring for someone because they’re here to help you too.

02.01.2022 Cannabis over the counter in Australian pharmacies The News has been full of articles about the Therapeutic Goods Administrations decision to make cannabis available over-the- counter in Australian pharmacies from June 2021. While the headline is largely true, there is a bit more to it. TGA will permit the sale of cannabis products that are purely cannabidiol (CBD). This is the ingredient in cannabis that has actions in the treatment of pain, insomnia and anxiety. It i...s also used (as a prescription medicine) for the treatment of epilepsy. There are other ingredients in some types of cannabis; tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the ingredient responsible for the high that is associated with recreational use of marijuana. THC products have medicinal uses in multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, chronic severe pain and more. There are NO plans to make THC products available over-the-counter. There are other restrictions on the new CBD listings. Supply will be limited to 30 days per package; a maximum daily dosage of 60mg will be enforced; it will not be available for children, and must be packaged in a child-resistant container. And importantly, the products available under this listing must be registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Currently there are no CBD products registered for sale in Australia, although with this newly-announced listing manufacturers may be prompted to apply for registration and listing. None of this is designed to interfere with patients needing access to medicinal cannabis today. The supply of medicinal cannabis is complex, requiring permits from state/territory and federal authorities and the clerical requirements are challenging to say the least. At Capital Chemist we are able to order and supply medicinal cannabis to patients with appropriate prescriptions and paperwork and can assist patients and prescribers with the clerical requirements.
