25.01.2022 Cannabis over the counter in Australian pharmacies The News has been full of articles about the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s decision to make cannabi...s available over-the- counter in Australian pharmacies from June 2021. While the headline is largely true, there is a bit more to it. TGA will permit the sale of cannabis products that are purely cannabidiol (CBD). This is the ingredient in cannabis that has actions in the treatment of pain, insomnia and anxiety. It is also used (as a prescription medicine) for the treatment of epilepsy. There are other ingredients in some types of cannabis; tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the ingredient responsible for the high that is associated with recreational use of marijuana. THC products have medicinal uses in multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, chronic severe pain and more. There are NO plans to make THC products available over-the-counter. There are other restrictions on the new CBD listings. Supply will be limited to 30 days per package; a maximum daily dosage of 60mg will be enforced; it will not be available for children, and must be packaged in a child-resistant container. And importantly, the products available under this listing must be registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Currently there are no CBD products registered for sale in Australia, although with this newly-announced listing manufacturers may be prompted to apply for registration and listing. None of this is designed to interfere with patients needing access to medicinal cannabis today. The supply of medicinal cannabis is complex, requiring permits from state/territory and federal authorities and the clerical requirements are challenging to say the least. At Capital Chemist we are able to order and supply medicinal cannabis to patients with appropriate prescriptions and paperwork and can assist patients and prescribers with the clerical requirements. 18.01.2022 We recognise that this is a challenging time for everyone and that includes people on the frontline in healthcare, retail or customer service roles. If you ar...e in a shop, medical centre, pharmacy or café today, please take the time to thank the person who is serving you. It’s been a tough week for direct customer-facing service industries, and even the smallest of positive interactions can make a big difference to someone’s day. To those of you who are already doing this, THANK YOU. It means more than we can say. Instead of allowing this challenge to divide us, let’s all use it to practice kindness, consideration and care towards everyone in our community.

13.01.2022 We live in an age of medicine shortages. Whether it be government policy, covid-induced shortages, manufacturing problems or ingredient failure, there are ongoi...ng supply problems of many common medications. Capital Chemist works hard to predict and prevent shortages so this may never be a problem for most patients, but there is a solution at hand - pharmacists may now offer common-sense alternatives (e.g. 2 x 20mg tablets instead of 1 x 40mg tablet), where no other solution is available. As always, this will be done in consultation with you (the patient) and the prescriber, and will allow patients prompt supply of medicines without delay. 10.01.2022 Capital Chemist confirms involvement in rollout of Covid-19 vaccination program Capital Chemist's 47 pharmacies today firmly committed to assisting the governme...nt's rollout of Australia's national Covid-19 vaccination program. Our pharmacies are preparing to lodge expressions of interest when the process launches later this week, and our pharmacists will be participating in the mandatory training program - as is to be expected for any new vaccination program. Capital Chemist has a long history of providing vaccinations in our pharmacies; over 60,000 vaccines have been administered in our pharmacies since pharmacist vaccination became reality (after the successful Queensland Pharmacy Vaccination Trial in 2014). The exact timing is still to be confirmed although the Pharmacy Covid-19 Vaccination Program is expected to start in May 2021. Pharmacy will be involved from phase 2A onwards, helping to vaccinate: Adults aged 60-69 years Adults aged 50-59 years Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 18-54 Other critical workers. Involvement will continue with phase 2B which is the rest of Australia's adult population. Stay tuned for more information as it comes to hand.
