24.01.2022 New to the ACT region. I'm here to help you with your computer and technology problems at home or your office.

23.01.2022 You will no doubt have seen information on the news about the Media Bargaining Code. https://www.abc.net.au//microsoft-supports-media-/13117280 Google would have you think that the world would end if this was brought into legislation. https://about.google/google-in-australia/an-open-letter/... I think that it is a mistake to frame this as "Google (and Facebook) having to pay for news". A better way of thinking about it is that Google and Facebook would be paying a levy to support journalism in Australia. Both companies take billions of dollars from this country, largely untaxed or taxed very lightly. The Media Bargaining Code would be a way of putting money back into an industry that has been decimated by search and online technology. A strong journalism industry is a key to democracy - surely the Fake News debacle has taught us that. It does concern me that the main beneficiaries of the payments from Google and Facebook under the Media Bargaining Code will be a small number of big players in the Australian news landscape. We also need a strong rural and regional new industry - see the Save Our Voices campaign. https://www.saveourvoices.com.au What do you think?

22.01.2022 With the COVID outbreak on the Northern Beaches in NSW I cannot help but think what a missed opportunity it was that the Australian Government did not use the Apple/Google joint contact tracing framework. Of course, mandatory mask usage in public should be happening RIGHT NOW but if if this framework was in use for the newly updated COVIDSafe app it may have made a significant difference. https://covid19.apple.com/contacttracing https://www.google.com/covid19/exposurenotifications/

21.01.2022 I found this video absolutely fascinating. https://youtu.be/EIEwy8rPik4

21.01.2022 The unregulated implementation of facial recognition camera should be of concern to all of us.The argument "if you've done nothing wrong, you shouldn't be concerned" doesn't wash, as this information may never be deleted and there would be nothing stopping it from being used for other purposes. I have signed the offical Parliament House petition to stop this. Will you? https://www.abc.net.au//facial-surveillance-slowl/12308282 https://www.aph.gov.au/petition_sign?id=EN1600

19.01.2022 Still using Windows 7 or 8? Did you know that it is sometimes possible to upgrade to Win10 for free?

18.01.2022 I just posted a comment about Facebook’s move to block Australian news content. The post included a link to the Betoota Advocate, a satirical website, not news. It looks like even this has been blocked. So has BOM. As a teacher I recognise this as bullying behaviour. This from a company that pays vastly less tax than they should. This is a quote from the Australian Financial Review from 2020. I’d like to include the URL but of course this would mean that the post would be blo...cked by Facebook. Facebook is particularly coy with its numbers, reporting Australian cash revenue of only $709.5 million last year, of which only $167 million was Australian revenue Revenue of $709M? Really? Then to minimise even this amount to $ 167M beggars belief.

18.01.2022 I've never found one of these inside a computer and quite frankly I hope I never do!

16.01.2022 Is your computer running slowly? Don't be tempted to download one of the many "repair" tools that are found on the internet. Most of these are useless and the worst of them will install undesirable software onto your computer without your knowledge. The very best solution is a clean install of the operating system. This involves copying your files and documents onto an external hard drive, wiping the computer then installing and updating the operating system. If this sounds like too much hard work, I am able to do this for you. Note that Windows applications will need to be reinstalled. Most Macintosh applications will be restored from the backup, a small number will need to be reinstalled.

15.01.2022 Did you know that most people don’t need a separate antivirus application for their Windows or Macintosh computer? Years ago, both Microsoft and Apple each bought companies that made antivirus programs for those operating systems and incorporated these into their products. Sure, there are no bells and whistles but they do the job and do it well, getting updates automatically. In my opinion, the maker of the operating system is in the best position to develop security software to protect that system.

11.01.2022 Creating the smart home is certainly an exercise in frustration, but there may be some good news on the horizon. Apple, Amazon, Google and Zigbee are working on an open standard for home automation. This means that devices for one system will potentially work with another. This is then likely to force other manufacturers to adopt this standard, which should be straightforward because an open standard does not have any licensing fees. 11.01.2022 Flash has been an important part of the personal computer environment for many years but Adobe has now strongly recommended that Flash be removed from all computers as it is no longer supported. It is not enough to simply not use Flash. It is a serious security problem to have it installed on your computer. Removal is pretty straightforward but if you need help remember I am always available to help you with your computer issue, big or small. https://www.adobe.com//produc/flashplayer/end-of-life.html

07.01.2022 Home automation or the "smart home" is something that interests me, however there is a huge range of devices and many if them are incompatible with each other. Some devices are also insecure, with information about your home, including potentially your wifi password, stored on third party servers in an insecure manner. I don't claim.to be an expert in home automation, however I would be happy to advise you and help you to implement a solution. As usual, no charge for advice.

04.01.2022 Instant money transfers, technically called the New Payments Platform, were introduced a little while ago. This is a great way to do contactless payments where the money is immediately available to the recipient, just like cash. You might see this as PayID or Osko in your banking settings. Instant transfers may not necessarily be free, however. I've seen PayPal take 3% of the transaction where instant transfer was used. I've not seen this elsewhere. For more information about the New Payments Platform see this website. https://PayID.com.au

I have a lot of experience in using a wide variety of computer systems and I am also a skilled communicator, having been a high school teacher for almost 40 years. I am able to copy your files from the old system to the new system, and then help you along the way to using your new system. Get in touch and let me see how I can help you!

03.01.2022 Here are two important websites to follow. #1 shows the uptake of vaccines around the world https://www.smh.com.au//covid-19-global-vaccine-tracker-an... #2 is a calculator that shows your place in the Australian queue. https://www.smh.com.au//where-are-you-in-the-vaccine-queue I am in Group 3 and I will be getting the vaccine as soon as it is available to me. Why don’t you join me?

01.01.2022 I’ve had a few calls about Windows updates that have gone awry, with the computer not logging in properly (just showing the background photo) or causing Office to crash after the update. If you can shut down and restart the computer that’s a good first step. On a laptop you may need to force it to turn off by pressing and holding the power button for about 10 seconds. If Office365 is crashing try reinstalling from office.com. You may need to uninstall Office365 first but don’t worry, you won’t lose your files. If you’re still having problems, give me a call. I’ll get you up and running again as soon as possible.

01.01.2022 Why is my computer so slow? There can be many reasons why a computer is running slowly. Older computers tend to get slower as they age because the programs that they are trying to run are generally designed for new computers, which have better specifications. Older computers may also use spinning disk hard drives, which are much slower than modern solid state SSD drives. Spinning disk hard drives can also exhibit wear over time which causes them to run more slowly. Malware... such as viruses can also slow down a computer. Many older computers may benefit from having a complete reinstall of their operating system. This will get rid of any extraneous programs that might be slowing down the computer. If your computer is running slowly please give me a call. I can give you a free assessment on what I believe is the reason for the computer running slowly and my recommendation on how to improve it.

01.01.2022 Hopefully everybody should know that passwords are really important, but how can you know if your particular password is secure? Fortunately there are a range of password checkers out there but naturally you should be very careful about typing your password into random websites. Make use you use a trusted website such as Kaspersky that I have linked to below. https://password.kaspersky.com... Here is a good article about what makes a secure password, along with a strategy to create a secure password. https://www.kaspersky.com//false-perception-of-it-security Please note that you REALLY need to have separate passwords for different websites. If you use the same password across different websites, not if but when one of the websites is breached, your password will be available to criminals for a range of different sites. The only exception might be for websites that you really don’t care if somebody accesses it as you. To keep track of which password you use for different websites, I suggest that you use a password management application. Personally I use 1Password, which I think is well worth the $US36 annual fee. Look for an application that works across all of your devices and that stores your information securely so that even if the password management site is breaches, your own passwords are not exposed. https://1password.com 1Password has the nice feature of checking your passwords against known data breaches, and will analyse your passwords and suggest that you change any passwords that are vulnerable. It also has a customisable password generator to make it easy to create random passwords.
